Sharks' Ross fears high shot from Morley

Ben Ross fears Sydney Roosters enforcer Adrian Morley will let fly with one of his "wayward shots" on the Cronulla prop's injured face when the NRL teams meet at Toyota Park on Saturday night.

Sharks' Ross fears high shot from Morley
April 7, 2006 - 5:30PM

Ben Ross fears Sydney Roosters enforcer Adrian Morley will let fly with one of his "wayward shots" on the Cronulla prop's injured face when the NRL teams meet at Toyota Park on Saturday night.

Ross will play for the second consecutive week with a fractured cheekbone and broken nose suffered in a match against Manly a fortnight ago.

The Queensland Origin forward admitted the injuries - caused by a sickening collision with Sea Eagles prop Jason King - had dented his confidence during Cronulla's 24-22 victory over South Sydney last weekend.

Ross told AAP he felt much better this week but expressed concern over Morley, who has an unwanted reputation of sailing close to the wind in defence.

"I know I can expect some hits on it," former Penrith prop Ross said about his cheekbone and nose.

"I'm just worried that Morley's known for his wayward shots on the face.

"He doesn't mean to do it but if one of those connects on my face then I'm in a bit of trouble.

"It's something I'll think about as the game goes on but I'll go out there and hopefully play my normally game."

Morley has already landed in trouble with the judiciary this year, copping a two-match suspension for a high shot on Souths halfback Ben Walker, who suffered concussion and a knee injury from the crunching hit.

Ross, 25, was disappointed with his performance in the win over Souths, especially considering Queensland selector Alan Smith was watching on.

"I think he's back again this weekend so it'd be good to put in a good performance against the Roosters," Ross noted.

The facial injuries certainly didn't help his cause against a woeful Souths outfit.

"It did affect my performance but this week has been a lot better," Ross pointed out.

"It hasn't hampered my training in any way and I've done everything I can to prepare for the game so hopefully it'll be in the back of my mind but not too much."

The Roosters and the Sharks have looked unconvincing early in the season as both teams continue working on new combinations following the arrival of several fresh faces.

In a worrying sign, Morley this week admitted the Roosters forwards were no longer the benchmark for aggression in the NRL but Ross believes they still pose a big threat, even without their intimidation of past years.

"They got new fellas coming in and they have to get that fear factor back," Ross said.

"You've still got (Craig) Fitzgibbon, Ashley Harrison and Chris Flannery, all quality players who have played for their state or country.

"They're a pack to be feared but in a different way.

"They've got the experience and the skill, everything that needs to be in a forward pack.

"They can still sting you in a minute if you knock off."

Stuart benches Soward
By James Hooper
April 08, 2006

SYDNEY Roosters coach Ricky Stuart is poised to axe rookie halfback Jamie Soward to the interchange bench - switching Brett Finch into the No.7 role and Craig Wing to hooker.

In a major selection shock, Stuart has overhauled the play-making partnership at the 2002 premiers after admitting the Roosters' halves "went missing" in the second 40 minutes of last weekend's loss to Manly.

Cronulla coach Stuart Raper last night confirmed he had heard about the anticipated changes ahead of tonight's match at Toyota Park.

Raper said the Sharks were prepared for Wing to begin the game with Finch to revert to a first-receiver role after being pushed to hooker to start the season.

"I've heard that mail as well, we're expecting that and we'll be ready," Raper said. "That's pretty similar to what we were expecting, Soward plays pretty similar to Finch."

The move from Stuart comes after Finch was switched to hooker in a selection shock to start the season, with Wing demoted to the bench.

Wing's father Allan last month claimed his son was "humiliated" at being axed to the bench.

Soward enjoyed a sound start to the season but is still developing his partnership with Roosters' prize recruit Braith Anasta, the new five-eighth at Bondi Junction.

Anasta has been carrying a groin injury but coach Stuart has refused to use the injury as any sort of excuse.

Former Bulldogs forward Charlie Tonga has also been promoted to the Roosters squad to replace the injured Nigel Plum.

Raper has axed Greg Bird to Premier League while Ben Pomeroy will also play his first match of the year in the lower grades tonight.

# BRONCOS defence coach Peter Ryan says skipper Darren Lockyer's tackling has improved this season and there is no need to "hide" the Test five-eighth in defence.

Ryan said Lockyer had a key role to play in defence against South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium tonight and backed him to handle anything the Rabbitohs threw at him.

Lockyer's stats for the season are unflattering, with the Test star making 46 tackles and missing 23 in four rounds. But those figures were blown out by the Broncos' first-round 36-4 loss to North Queensland, when he was playing his first match after off-season foot surgery.

Against the Cowboys, Lockyer made 13 tackles and missed 11. But the next week against Cronulla he missed only three tackles and made 11 and his stats have followed a similar line in the next two weeks.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett said yesterday Lockyer's defence since round one was "much improved" while Ryan, a former hard-hitting forward for the club and later with the Brumbies in rugby union, said Lockyer was "looking good".

"Darren's awareness of when he should go forward to tackle guys is good and his general work in defence has improved too," Ryan said.

Roosters down Sharks in tight NRL win

Sydney Roosters have paid a heavy price for their thrilling 28-26 victory over Cronulla at Toyota Park, with rugby union target Ryan Cross suffering a serious ankle injury.

Roosters pay price for tight NRL win
April 8, 2006 - 9:44PM

Sydney Roosters have paid a heavy price for their thrilling 28-24 victory over Cronulla at Toyota Park, with Craig Fitzgibbon, Shane Shackleton and Ryan Cross set to spend time in the casualty ward.

Cross, who has been targeted by rugby union's Western Force in a possible cross-code switch, suffered ankle ligament damage in a Phil Bailey tackle in the 27th minute and is set for a 4-6 week stint on the sidelines.

The news was no better for back-rower Shackleton, who lasted just 15 minutes before he was forced from the field after dislocating his left shoulder when tackled by Sharks captain Brett Kimmorley.

Fitzgibbon, who kicked a goal to give him his 1000th point for the club despite suffering an ankle injury moments earlier, is some chance to play next weekend but will undergo precautionary scans during the week.

"Shane and Ryan are both looking at about 4-6 weeks on the sidelines," confirmed club doctor John Orchard.

"It's a high ankle sprain for Ryan, so he'll be out for a while."

Fitzgibbon said he was hopeful of playing against Brisbane on Friday night.

"I've had ankle injuries like this before, but it's hard to tell how bad it is - hopefully I'll be right (for the Broncos)."

All three were unable to finish the match, with Roosters coach Ricky Stuart praising the courage of his side to hold off the fast-finishing Sharks.

"Very courageous," said Stuart, who dropped halfback Jamie Soward to the interchange bench in favour of Craig Wing, while Ashley Harrison was also benched in a reshuffle which saw David Shillington promoted to the starting side.

"We've talked about this week having the senior players ... showing some guidance."

Despite the setbacks, the visitors dominated the opening 40 minutes, skipping away to a 16-0 first half lead courtesy of tries to Amos Roberts, Anthony Tupou and Craig Wing.

The Sharks stormed back into the contest in the second stanza, levelling the scores at 18-18 by the 58th minute via three unanswered tries.

Adam Dykes was instrumental in the first two, setting up David Simmons in the 45th minute before doing likewise for Kimmorley eight minutes later.

With possession and momentum in their favour, centre Beau Scott levelled the scores when he broke through some tired Roosters defence to level the scores.

"Even when they got into the match I thought we could still hold them off," said Roosters pivot Braith Anasta.

"We showed a lot of courage to guts it out."

Just as the Sharks threatened to steal the game, Brett Finch gave the Roosters a 22-18 lead when he dummied his way to the line from close range. Fitzgibbon's conversion gave him his 1000th point for the Roosters.

In a see-sawing half, the Roosters seemingly buried the Sharks through a Harrison try on the back of a Soward 40-20 kick, but it was soon cancelled out by a converted Luke Covell try six minutes from fulltime to draw his side within four points and set up a grandstand finish.

Dykes almost scored on the buzzer, only for Chris Flannery to make a desperate covering tackle.

Sharks coach Stuart Raper said his side needed to cut down its error rate to compete with the top teams.

"What we are certainly not going to do is change what we are doing, panic or make radical changes and do things like that because we are playing a good brand of football," he said.

Rooster edge Sharks in thriller
April 8, 2006 - 9:34PM

Sydney Roosters have paid a heavy price for their thrilling 28-26 victory over Cronulla at Toyota Park tonight, with Ryan Cross suffering a serious ankle injury.

Cross, who has been targeted by the Super 14 side Western Force in a possible cross-code switch, suffered ankle ligament damage in a Phil Bailey tackle in the 27th minute and is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

The news was no better for back-rower Shane Shackleton, who lasted just 15 minutes before he was forced from the field after injuring his left shoulder in a tackle by Sharks captain Brett Kimmorley.

But despite the setbacks, the visitors dominated the opening 40 minutes against a team they have beaten in six of their last seven clashes.

Roosters coach Ricky Stuart made several changes to his starting line-up, dropping halfback Jamie Soward to the interchange bench in favour of Craig Wing, while Ashley Harrison was also benched in a reshuffle which saw David Shillington promoted to the starting side.

The Roosters capitalised on a mistake from Lance Thompson in his own territory with boom centre Iosia Soliola setting up Amos Roberts for the opening try of the game in the 12th minute with a superb flick pass.

The lead was extended to 10-0 midway through the first half when Anthony Tupou spun through a David Simmons tackle on a barnstorming 10-metre charge to the tryline.

And then just two minutes before halftime Wing, in the starting side for the first time this season, put the Roosters in control when he left Bailey and Kimmorley in his wake in a brilliant solo run to the line.

Their lead was shortlived, however, with Brett Finch giving the Roosters a 22-18 lead when he dummied his way to the line from close range. Craig Fitzgibbon's conversion gave him his 1000th point for the club.

In a see-sawing half, the Roosters seemingly regained the initiative through a Harrison try on the back of a Soward 40/20 kick, but it was soon cancelled out by a converted Luke Covell try six minutes from fulltime for the Sharks to draw within four points and set up a grandstand finish.

The Sydney Roosters held on for a tight 28-24 victory over the Sharks in the round two National Rugby League clash at Shark Park this evening.

Ricky Stuart's side led 16-0 at the break after putting on three unanswered tries in the opening 40 minutes.

Amos Roberts, Anthony Tupou and Craig Wing all crossed in the first half for the visitors while Craig Fitzgibbon added two conversions.

But the Roosters' lead quickly vanished as the home side scored three tries of their own to start the second half.

Winger David Simmons, Brett Kimmorley and Beau Scott all scored four-pointers for the Sharks to bring the scoreline to 18-18.

But the Roosters scored again through Brett Finch and then Ashley Harrison to snuff out the Sharks' challenge.

Covell scored another try for the home side, but the Roosters held on for a four-point win.

Finch delivers on cue
By David Riccio
April 09, 2006

Sharks 24 Roosters 28

MALIGNED Sydney Roosters star Brett Finch got his side out of trouble last night with his best performance of the season as Ricky Stuart went closer to solving his playmaking puzzle.

Finch had a hand in four tries, scoring one himself, but it was the way he stood up when his team was under pressure that would have most delighted Stuart.

In cruise control at 18-0, the Roosters ran into trouble as the Sharks scored 18 unanswered points of their own midway through the second half.

But Finch stepped up with his try and then created one for lock Ashley Harrison, his grubber kick rebounding off the upright, to restore a 10-point lead.

Jamie Soward, relegated to the interchange bench after starting the year at halfback, also came up with a big play in the lead up to Harrison's try with a 40/20 kick.

After looking down and out as they trailed 18-0 just after halftime, the Sharks were persistent. They fought back to 18-18, and even when the Roosters skipped clear to 28-18 they refused to surrender.

A Luke Covell try and conversion reduced the deficit to 28-24 and the Sharks were still chasing the winning try right up until the final siren.

The Roosters opened the scoring after a handling error from Cronulla's Lance Thompson 25m from his own line.

Slick backline play resulted in centre Iosia Soliola sending over Amos Roberts with a beautiful flick pass.

But there was a blow for the Roosters soon after when backrower Shane Shackleton left the field with a shoulder injury.

It didn't stop their momentum, with Anthony Tupou charging over for a 10-0 lead following Craig Fitzgibbon's conversion.

The Roosters were dealt a further body blow in the 27th minute when centre Ryan Cross reeled from a crunching tackle by Phil Bailey with an ankle problem.

Cross tried to play on for several minutes before heading into the rooms for treatment.

Craig Wing had the final say of the half, a brilliant individual effort giving the Roosters a 16-0 advantage.

Despite conceding an early penalty goal after the break, the Sharks were a different team.

Magnificent footwork from Adam Dykes from the scrumbase 30m out from the Roosters line allowed fullback David Simmons to score.

Skipper Brett Kimmorley then crossed from close range before centre Beau Scott added a third try to put his team within reach of an improbable victory.

Keeping the ball alive, the Sharks' Tevita Latu slipped a brilliant ball to Scott who pushed past the defence of Sam Perritt to score.

Covell kept his perfect goalkicking record intact to level the scores at 18-all with 20 minutes to play and set up an exciting finish.

But limited to 15 players after both Shackleton (shoulder) and Cross (ankle) were assisted from the field in the first half, it was a brave effort from the Roosters to hold on.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS 28 (B Finch A Harrison A Roberts A Tupou C Wing tries; C Fitzgibbon 4 goals)

SHARKS 24 (L Covell B Kimmorley B Scott D Simmons tries; L Covell 4 goals)

Roosters 28 Sharks 24

ROOSTERS coach Ricky Stuart was last night thanking his lucky stars after his side scraped home with a tense four-point win.

The Roosters squandered an 18-0 lead against the Sharks before prevailing 28-24.

A second-half lapse - similar to last week's collapse against Manly - allowed the Sharks to rack up three converted tries in 12 minutes to even the ledger in the 57th minute.

Stuart said it was a courageous effort by his senior players, including Brett Finch, who started at halfback and saved the visitors late in the game when he scored one try and set up another to get his side home.

"We had a good talk this week about needing our senior players such as [Finch] showing some guidance," Stuart said. "It struck home a bit that we have to have more seniority among our senior players.

"We did everything in our powers to lose the game and fortunately we toughed it out and got a victory. I think they deserved it, the way they played the first half, the way we finished with 14 men, it was a very tough victory and we can build off that as a team."

The win came at a price for the Roosters. Centre Ryan Cross is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks with an ankle injury and second-rower Shane Shackleton for a similar period with a shoulder complaint. Captain Craig Fitzgibbon left the field late in the second half with an ankle injury but could be OK by Friday's game against the Broncos.

Hooker Craig Wing, who started the match after wholesale changes to the starting line-up by Stuart, singled out several individual plays in the second half as crucial turning points.

He said a one-on-one strip by Charlie Tonga, in his first game with the Roosters, and a 40-20 kick by replacement Jamie Soward, swung the game back in the Roosters' favour.

"We always want our bench players to come on and have an impact and they really did that and that turned the momentum of the game for us," he said.

Sharks coach Stuart Raper said luck did not go his side's way but admitted they had to stop making the same mistakes week after week.

"We haven't had a lot of luck this year . . . but a couple of crucial things really hurt us when I thought we were back in the game," he said.

Shark's jibe annoys Morley

SYDNEY Roosters prop Adrian Morley is disappointed Cronulla counterpart Ben Ross feared for his safety because of the Great Britain international's reputation for "wayward shots".

The clash between the heavyweight forwards was one of the highlights of the Roosters' 28-24 victory over the Sharks last night, with Ross playing for the second consecutive week with a fractured cheekbone and broken nose sustained in a match with Manly a fortnight ago.

In the lead-up to last night, the Queensland Origin forward admitted he was concerned about again playing with the injuries – caused by a sickening collision with Sea Eagles prop Jason King – because of Morley's reputation for hitting opponents high.

"I know I can expect some hits on it," former Penrith prop Ross said about his cheekbone and nose.

"I'm just worried that Morley's known for his wayward shots on the face.

"He doesn't mean to do it but if one of those connects on my face then I'm in a bit of trouble."

But Morley bristled at suggestions Ross was in any danger due to his tackling style.

"I'm disappointed he said that," he said.

"I don't think that's the right thing to say, from any person in the NRL.

"I just play the game, so (those comments) are disappointing."

Morley, who has missed 19 NRL matches through suspension, celebrated his 100th for the Roosters last night and is in negotiations to continue his stay at Bondi Junction.

"We're still in negotiations, but we're taking things slowly, there's no rush," he said.

The Roosters paid a heavy price for the win, with Craig Fitzgibbon, Shane Shackleton and Ryan Cross set to spend time in the casualty ward.

Shackleton (shoulder) and Cross (ankle) will both be out for four-six weeks, while Fitzgibbon is hopeful of playing against Brisbane on Friday night despite an ankle injury.

Morley is confident the tri-colours can cover for the losses.

"We've got players that can step up and do the job," he said.

"It's going to be a good opportunity for the young guys."
