The Cronulla Sharks continued their strong start to the season and remain undefeated, securing their third straight win. This week, it was Mounties who succumbed to the Sharks blend of experience and youthful exuberance, going down 32–6, on a humid Saturday afternoon at Aubrey Keech Reserve.
Both sides comfortably won their respective fixtures last weekend, making this week’s game a difficult one to judge prior to the game getting underway. It was clear however, that from kick off it was the Cronulla Sharks that were going to dominate proceedings, securing their first try only minutes into the first half when Ben Hampton scored a length of the field try, splitting the Mounties defensive line in two.
Within minutes of the Sharks first try, Alipate Ratini went over for their second, after Chad Townsend threw a beautiful spiralling cut out ball to his winger, who went over untouched in the corner.
Cronulla were unrelenting in the opening 20 minutes, and Mounties assisted their cause by being caught offside from the ensuing kick-off. The Sharks talented Lock Tyrone Peachey made them pay by scoring off the back of a brilliant individual effort. He outsmarted the defence as he drifted left, sold a dummy, stepped back inside and snuck through the hole he manufactured for himself in the Mounties defensive line, diving over beside the post.
It wasn’t until the 27th minute that the home side were able to post points on the board. Demetri Pelo’s effort seemed to have briefly stopped the rot, enabling them to go in at halftime with only a 10 point deficit, and the belief that they were on the comeback trail.
Little did they know that Scott Jones’ conversion would be the last of their points for the afternoon.
The Sharks came out the stronger of the two sides in the second half.
A delightful inside ball from veteran Brett Finch put fullback Ben Hampton through a gaping hole. Hampton then drew the fullback before handing it off to Tony Gigot to score giving Cronulla their fourth try of the game, taking them out to a sixteen point lead.
It was evident that lady luck was not on Mounties side for much of the contest. Second rower Clay Priest was sent off in the 60th minute for a dubious dangerous tackle. The one man advantage enabled Cronulla to continue to govern the game, scoring yet another try in the 61st minute, Ratini crossing for his second try of the match.
The final try of the game came from hooker Pat Politoni who scored off a short ball from Junior Roqica. Roqica was able to put the hooker right under the sticks in the 77th minute, securing the Cronulla Sharks a much deserved 32 – 6 victory.
Mounties travel to Hunter Stadium next weekend, where they will take on the Newcastle Knights, whilst the Cronulla Sharks return home to host the Newtown Jets where they will be trying to make it four from four.
