From RLW:
  • Cronulla's committment to the good old-fashioned football quality of 'backing up' was the big feature of last Sunday's Mother's Day Massacre at Endeavour. The eager Sharks nudged each other out of the way in their keenness to back-up the ball-carrier in their runaway 36-12 win.
  • The Sharks were a grade ahead of the Panthers - particularly in their ability to make the most of breaks, and half-breaks.
  • The 3 first-half tries were scored in identical fashion - sharp raids on the right-hand blind side, with two tries to lock Hardy and one to winger Gardner - each one in almost exactly the same spot.
  • Dane Sorensen missed his first three goals, then landed six straight.
  • It was 18-6 at the break, and nine minutes after half-time Gardner sealed the win with a thrilling long-range effort instigated by Greg Mullane.
  • Five-eighth Mullane was the outstanding performer in the game. He made 20 tackles, and had a big role in three tries.
  • Steve Hardy, busy and solidly built, backed up to score two tries, while half Wakefield is a neat player, and did his job well behind a business-like pack.
