I don't think the reality of the signing will set in for a while, but it is a MASSIVE step forward in the future of the Club to tie up Gal. When you consider the fact that;

1. The Property Development is still yet to be entirely approved.
2. A new salary cap system is just around the corner that will seriously alter pay scales.
3. Gal was offered big money elsewhere (although specifics were not mentioned)
4. Our playing roster isn't the flashest.

...to get Gal to sign up for life is remarkable. Carney for a couple of years or Gal for the rest of his career? I know what I think is the bigger story of the two.

One other thing that snowman alluded to the other day but that wasn't discussed in the detail it deserved; you can't begin to imagine how much of a win (and show of loyalty) it is for/to the Club that Gal didn't test the free agent market. He probably could've dragged the process out and squeezed a lot more money out of the Club by playing the waiting game. But he didn't. He's a loyal as anything I've ever seen. To be perfectly honest, in my eyes all Gal needs to do from here to bypass ET as the greatest Shark ever is to make it to the 300 Club (a real possibility now) and get the to the Grand Final. Doesn't even need to win it to make the claim.

Man love for Gal grows every day.

well said, I can only add

I look at Gal as a player in a supporters body, w/ that I mean in todays age players come & go to a club, a true supporter sticks w/ their club through thick & thin, if they are running dead last or a premiership winning team, a true supporter sticks solid, Gal is our modern day version of ET.

In the era I have grown up in my three favourite players of all time are ET, Peach & Gal, all were great players who had the opportunity to go w/ other clubs throughouut their careers when we werent travelling well & all stuck solid (we shafted Peach :().

Gal, you probably wont read this but you are one of the reasons why I'm proud to be a Sharks supporter. :cheers

I think the southern stand isn't worthy. Its a shame the other two are already named as no player has put in as much effort as Gal.

Yeah I'd rather name the northern hill after him and have a big bronze statue there. I think of the southern stand as being a bit of a weirdo corporate stand but the hill is for the people and I just love the idea of kids sitting under the statue of Gal.

He should be up the top of the hill in the middle with his hands raised and it should be a 1:1 life size statue haha.

Gallen signs with Sharks until 2015

Wednesday 19 Oct 2011 11:48

Sharks Captain Paul Gallen has signed a new contract with the Cronulla club which will make him a 'Shark for Life' and see the inspirational forward finish his career as a one-club player.

Gallen, who was already committed to playing the 2012 and 2013 seasons for the Sharks, has put pen to paper on an extension that will see him remain at the club through to the end of 2015.

The current NSW skipper and an integral member of the Australian Four Nations Team, Gallen committing his future to the Sharks is a significant development for the club as it strives to become a consistent contender in the NRL competition.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan was excited to announce Gallen's contract extension and went on to emphasise his captain's importance to the Sharks both next year and into the future.

"Over the last couple of seasons Paul has established himself as one of the elite players in the NRL competition. To have him commit to the Sharks for what is potentially the rest of his career, is extremely positive for the team and for our club," Flanagan said.

"If he isn't already, by the time his career is over I can see him being rated as the best player this club has ever had."

Gallen himself was pleased to have sorted out his footballing future and proud to be able to call himself a Shark for life.

"To be a one club man throughout my career is something I will be able to look back on one day with a lot of pride," Gallen said. "I've put a lot of hard work and effort into my career here at the Sharks and I look forward to the next four years being successful for me and also for the club."

The NSW Origin captain in 2011 and now a regular fixture in Kangaroo teams, Gallen began his career at the Sharks as a teenager, making his NRL debut in 2001, while in 2011 he played his 200th NRL game for the Cronulla club.

Gallen has also represented NSW on 11 occasions, three times as captain and has played 17 Test Matches for Australia.

Only problem with that is that opposition fans congregate on that hill.

Opposition fans aren't worthy to stand on the hill of a true legend.

Totally agree with this.

Great post.

But if we get Carney and he plays like the Carney that won the Dally M Medal of 2010.

Then we have serious playoff aspirations.

Awesome,

They should have in Carney's contract that Gallen should be able to punch piss out of him if he screws up

Thanks for putting up the press conference El Coco, as I was sitting in a stupid exam when it was held.:good:

Gee, I am so happy and proud to have such a great bloke sign up to be a Shark for life!!! He is brilliant, tough and so loyal. It would have been so easy (and lucrative) for him to have left us over the years but he has stuck with us through thick and thin.

I love love love him!!!
