I know it’s still early but what’s your prediction on where we’ll finish on the ladder after 25 rounds?

Personally I think we’re short on troops and making the 8 is just not going to happen this year.

I think we’ll be about 10th at the end of it all.

Unfortunately I agree mate, think we'll miss the 8.

I just looked at the draw. Is there any team who plays in so many different locations? Melbourne, Townsville, Brisbane, Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, Sunshine Coast, Central Coast, Newcastle, Canberra, Auckland

Just 5 games in Sydney in 4 months of footy from April through July.

Might be a tough year boys. I'm predicting another 8th place finish and another first weekend exit.

Gotta agree that we'll just miss the 8. My guess is 9-10.

A lot comes down to how we handle SJ, Moylan and Dugan being off contract, and Fifs if he's playing on one leg.

I won't mind missing the finals if we make the right contract decisions for the future.

Didn't realise it was that bad. I know we're taking some home games away but still, that will be tough.

Will be good to get past this year and then back to Shark Park next year!

I think our chances will depend on how these 3 go over the first quarter of the seasons opening rounds (especially Moyza).
If they all stay fit and play to somewhere near their ability and keep us in the hunt (until SJ takes the field) I think we could be fighting for a middle of top 8 spot (somewhere from 4th - 6th)

If they play busted or not at all, then more likely bottom half of the ladder with maybe a push for 8th at best if we get a few lucky wins but more likely slip out of finals contentions.

We can't give away a big lead to the top teams in the early rounds otherwise it is too much to try to pull back in the later rounds.

JOSH DUGAN

The Sharks centre is entering the final year of his contract in the Shire and given he is on big money he needs a massive year in 2021 to stay.

Turning 31 this year, Dugan has managed over 17 games in a season just once since the 2015 campaign with the Dragons, which was when he played 23 games in 2019.

Through no fault of his own Dugan has been hampered by a string of injuries that have hindered his ability to stay on the park for consistent periods.

Dugan has had a great career for club, state and country having scored 76 tries in 207 games for the Raiders, Dragons and Sharks since debuting in 2009.

In that time he has also played 12 games for the Blues in the Origin arena and 12 Tests for the Kangaroos, but the last of these rep matches came back in 2017.

Sharks coach John Morris has reportedly been looking at Dugan as one of three players to move on in a bid to balance the salary cap and if so his future may be in the UK.

Dugan’s future in the NRL and particularly at the Sharks is dependent on staying on the field for the majority of the season ahead and dominating while he is out there, but his next contract won’t be anywhere near as lucrative.

MATT MOYLAN

Another injury-plagued member of the Sharks that coach Morris was looking to move on last year was Matt Moylan, who is also in the last year of his deal in 2021.

Again Moylan can’t be blamed for injuries, but you also can’t blame the club for looking to get a big money contract off their books for a player that is not delivering on the park.

Moylan played 24 games in his first season in the Shire in 2018, but has since managed 11 games in 2019 and just eight games in 2020.

The nature of Moylan’s repeated hamstring injuries is also worrying because there is a feeling they could be re-injured at any time be it at training or on the field, both of which happened last year.

The 29-year-old has scored 28 tries in 132 games since his debut for the Panthers in 2013, but he has scored just two tries in three seasons at Cronulla.

To his credit Moylan has reportedly been training the house down for the Sharks and has impressed Morris with his desire after being dropped late last year.

Moylan needs to stay healthy and dominate on the field or his future at the Sharks won’t go beyond 2021 and given his injury history it would be a brave club to take him on unless it was on a drastically reduced salary.

ANDREW FIFITA

Sharks legend Andrew Fifita is entering the second last year of his deal, which given his chronic knee injury will likely be his last contract if he can make it to the end of it.

Fifita has been a warrior for the Sharks and through no fault of his own is dealing with a knee injury that caused coach Morris to talk to him about medical retirement last year.

Turning 32 this season, Fifita is at the back end of his career after scoring 39 tries in 223 games for the Sharks and leading them to a drought-breaking premiership in 2016.

Fifita has also played 10 games for the NSW Blues and 17 Tests for Australia and his native Tonga in a brilliant career.

Given his service to the game, Fifita undoubtedly deserves to go out on his terms, but if he can’t produce his own high standards on the field then the decision may be taken away from him.

If this is his last season in rugby league let’s hope he stays on the field for club and country and goes out his own way.

Said Pre The Draw- 10th, now i'm thinking 11th. Any higher a Bonus. We have a disjointed roster. Not enough tough gritty Defenders.
Really enjoyed the style of Footy last yr, hope we keep it up, but tighten the D.

Yeah I have the 9-11 sort of feeling, like someone posted a couple back, I’m happy (sort of) to take a small step back if it means taking a couple future steps forward in regards to our recruiting and retention. Just beat the drags and manly twice storm at least once and I will find my inner zen.

I only see our squad improving in a few ways from last year

- Our rookies being more seasoned with another off season which I think will see big improvements but not sure how much ?
- A fit Moylan and Fifita which could make a huge difference to us
- singling out Brailey being in a spine position but his development and improvement should be noticeable.

Then again no SJ for the first n number of weeks is a big negative and no real recruits of any nature isn't great.

I'll be ecstatic with a top 8 finish, but I think I'll be happy if we just nail some good recruits for 2022 and lock in a coach. See this year as a gap year before we hopefully go back to Shark Park in 2022.

The thing about only improving a little bit is we hopefully shouldn't get much worse... certainly it would be hard for our defence to get much worse!

There is a probably unlikely, but not completely unrealistic chance that Moylan can do a solid SJ impression to start the season. If his legs hold up and he can tap into his 2018 5/8 form missing SJ won't be our biggest issue.
Similarly we have WK at 1 who can ballplay pretty well and can assist Moylan and Chad keeping some points coming, but has other areas he (like many others in the squad) need to improve on.
Brailey showed some really exciting glimpses (on top of generally being good) last season so there is hope for him to take his average game play up another level.

Overall the spine has a low floor but a high enough ceiling to take a team into the finals. The sooner SJ is back the better, obviously, as for a big chunk of last season he was huge for us.

As you say, we have some young forwards and backs with a lot of potential. If they can build on their 2020 seasons they are also good enough to make the 8.

Usually I don't mind having a guess at where we will finish and then you just never know if you will get derailed by injury or not. This season I'm finding it tough to pick a spot, going in with so many injury question marks, most notably the fragile legs of Moylan trying to cover for SJ who is out for, potentially 8 or more weeks (hopefully much less).

We definitely have a good enough team to make the finals, and probably not a good enough team to go much further, but obviously any injuries can easily see you fall down the ladder, and we are starting with some.

Another way to look at it is who from the top 8 from last year do you believe will miss out this year?

I think the below all definitely make it, barring injuries

Penrith
Storm
Roosters
Souths

Probably make it

Knights
Canberra
Parra....although could easily miss out

I think Manly make it IF Turbo and Foran stay fit. That's a bloody big if though.

I also expect the Titans to give the 8 a serious nudge as well.

I think Souths, Penrith, Melbourne and Roosters are a step above everyone else at the moment, that’ll probably be the top 4. The rest of the ladder is up for grabs. Could be quite a close old logjam from 5th to 11th for most of the season.

I think you're spot on here.

We are fighting for a spot with Newy, Canberra, Parra, Manly and Gold Coast. If we drop lower than 10th I'd be disappointed. But its a long year, if we can somehow be 3-4/8 when SJ returns we could give it a crack.

Friz is a good signing potentially but I could definitely see Knights falling out, and probably I assume they will.
Eels had a pretty good run with injury in 2020, used least players of any team and have had some good contributors/solid back ups leave. Might not take too much adversity for them to slip.
Canberra did well to survive losing Hodgson so I guess they can fight off some adversity. Interesting to see what Ryan James can give them and they did get through quite a bit of 2020 without Bateman anyway.

Titans have built an imposing pack and have some good potential in the backs but their spine still leaves a bit to be desired. AJ should stay strong but Rein is pretty mediocre and I could see either/both of Fogarty & Taylor having a tougher 2021 than 2020. Pressure of expectation and in a way Fogarty's second year syndrome could happen with teams putting more attention on him. With the reputations of Tino and Fifita teams won't underestimate them so they better hope all new recruits stay switched on.

Manly whether Foran plays hooker or 6 I'm still dubious of. If Foran and Turbo both stay healthy sure, they will do better, but better than 13th is still a way off the finals. Think Davey and Aioli might not do as good impressions of Thompson and AFB as Manly hope which will hurt them too. Despite their Turbo problems last year they actually used equal second least players of the teams (joint with Panthers) so faced a below average amount of forced changes to work around.

Fun fact. In 2019 the warriors traveled more in round 1 than the roosters would all year.

I am going to go 7th, just because I am eternally optimistic.

As has been said, I think guys like Rudolph, Talakai, Brailey, Ronnie and co. can be better with experience, while Wade, Chad and Ramien all had pretty poor years by their standards - hoping they will be hungry for improvement.

If Moylan can play a 6/10 game each week or higher I think we can win at least half of our games before SJ is back and with him in the team and playing well (big 'if' after his injury) we will win more than we lose.

Also,

Roosters finished the year with trash performances and still don't have a halfback. Cordner might miss the year and another headknock for Keary could be an extended time out of the game.
Panthers had an amazing year, I don't think they can back it up. They will be hunted and I think they got through a lot of last year's wins on confidence. A dint to that could see them drop dramatically.
Eels don't impress me.
Knights have started the year with drama and don't have a 5/8 until Green comes back.

Fif's at 90% plus
Moylan at 100%
Graham @ 100 %
Tracey @ fullback until Jonno returns to halves
Pele to reek havoc .
Ferris to play a part at depth .
Tolman to stiffen ruck defence
Gal and Lewy keeping them honest
Outside backs defence to dramatically improve with fitness and organisation .
REAL competition for ALL positions except hooker
I'll stick with 6th or better
