This quote was a bit lost in the game day thread so moved it here on behalf of sharks69

and does anyone think a eights comp with ten minutes quarters would work in summer with double headers ,a bit like the 20 20 cricket ,,up the sharks

The suggestion of this 20/20 style match, look at the HSBC 7s as an indication of how a comp like this can work. Like rugby union or loath it, they have a very popular comp happening here that garners interest from plenty of countries and support is huge and growing. Party atmosphere, short games with massive sponsorship and tv potential.

The prize money is great and in some countries (Fiji obviously) this form of the game is now their number one focus.

An invitational long weekend or two long weekends in neighbouring countries (weekend one in Sydney and two in Auckland a fortnight later or something similar).

If teams have the money to enter, let them. Involvement from each club would be voluntary with players splitting the majority of the prize money ensuring you'd get interest from some decent players. Possibility of injury is obviously present but that happens in trials too, and this style game has much less impact on the body.

Players could play for their NRL team or a new team collated for the competition such as Country RL, Indigenous, Expats, and I'd imagine a slew of countries would hurry to be involved.

The union 7s is now a competition in it's own right with tournaments on the Gold Coast, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Scotland and London and maybe Dubai?

I think it is a good idea but I think the reason why they stopped was because the risk of injury wasn't worth it. My Dad has told me about some of the 7's comps they had back in the early-mid 90's I believe, which I was a bit young for. He said they were a bit of fun, nothing serious but still a good day out.

At the end of the day I reckon the clubs would block it. Imagine if Carney got injured playing in a tournament like this.

Yeah exactly.
I'd be a fan of it. But clubs don't even want their fastest sprinter to participate in a 100m sprint against the quickest from each club, so things like this have no chance.

Yeah I remember the 7's comps they had back in the day. They were good. But something in the off season would definitely be good for the game.

I have always been a fan of bringing back a sevens comp, would be great for the game imo.

In rugby and cricket, they have a separate tier of players who play the 7s.

You could do similar with the NRL e.g. Isaac Gordon would probably kill it at 7s/8s.

It would also help players develop more flair/skill/confidence, which is desperately needed.

I agree SF, a mixture of NYC and NSW Cup players would still be bloody entertaining.

This season Sharks side for example:
Isaac Gordon
Chad Townsend
Tyrone Peachey
Ricky Leutele
Sam Tagataese
Sosaia Feki
Michael Lichaa

There are probably NYC players that would fit in better and I didn't pick any subs.

also think it be great to invite teams like the brisbane bombers and perth pirates then if these kind of satellite teams produced big crowds and sponsership the arlc would have no option but to admit these teams it could be a two hour tv event and every time there is a try scored a add could be shown ,just like the afl ,,great for the television game welcpome back central coast koala bears wellington orcas adelaide rams ,it would certainly feed my addiction over the summer months and it wouldnt hurt the skill of the ball playing fast guys

ohhh up the sharkies

Maybe they could make it that you have to play in a team based on the area you were born. If you were born on the Gold Coast, you play for the Titans. If you were born in Fiji, you play for the Fijian team. No exceptions. That'd make it interesting and it should have qualifying so literally anyone can make a team if they want. Dubbo could have a team as long as they qualified.

To me, if you did this, it should still be only a pre-season thing like the old 7s.

They've killed cricket to a large extent by making it a year-round meaningless thing, and I'd hate to see the same thing happen to league.

Summer is for cricket, autumn/winter/spring for football, and that's the way it should stay! Plus I need the stress relief of the end of the footy season.

Agree SF. Plus I need my summer cricket days where you get your mates over, get the BBQ and a case and a swim and watch the cricket.

Actually I would love that right now.

mate imagine hitting the beach for the day then heading into allianz for a double header of eights footy or three games while the next while brooky has games and shark park, starts at seven ends at nine ,family friendly and brings in more supporters it would have the potential to be the biggest summer sport on tele,,it would be akin to taking the goal keepers out of a soccer match it would be a point scoring bonanza kicks off in mid october and finishes mid febuary ,,keeps rugby league players playing rugby league instead of following a different sport ,and eight players in a team ,that way the arlc owns it and me lol

League is the only team sport I watch so year-round would be fine with me. Gotta say I do get sick of it though!

Whilst I would much rather watch this sort of than cricket I do agree with the idea that it shouldn't be a big summer thing. I'd be thinking maybe a 2-3 week comp just before the trials.

I love ya enthusiasm guys, and as a league fan I would love there to be some footy over the off season.

But seriously it will never happen.

The season is already too long for the players. It will shortened if anything.

I actually think for a guy like Chad Townsend, a pre season with the top 25 Sharks players would be much more beneficial to his development, then some micky mouse summer comp.

Yeah I'm open to the idea of bringing back the sevens in the pre season, but not all summer.
