NSW Cup, Round 14 2011, Wentworthville v Sharks at Ringrose Park

On a cold and windy Sunday afternoon at Wentworthville's Ringrose Park first placed Cronulla Sharks went down to 7th placed Wentworthville Magpies in Round 14 of the Toyota Cup.

Sharks Coach Tony Herman revved up his men in warm up and reinforced the importance of maintaining the top spot through discipline, field position and dominance of the ruck.

Running with the breeze in the first half the Sharks conceded an early try to Wenty's Manuokafoa with a bustling run up the centre. Despite being stopped before the line, an outstretched arm saw him put the ball on the line for the first 4 pointer with the extra 2 points added by Magpies goalkicker Fluke.

The Sharks regained their composure and went on to dominate field position and with some clever backline work they stretched the defence resulting in Collis and Perkins getting around their markers and planting the ball over the line. Farlow's bustling at the line and hole running saw him rewarded with 2 solid tries. The swirling and gusty wind played havoc with the boot with Tongia successful with just 2 from 4.

The battle of the big men raged in the centre with Sharks Mannah and Vave taking on Manuokafoa and Peletelese. Some solid hits, powerful runs and leg drive saw the Sharks on top in an engaging battle. A Magpies try against the run of play just before half time and a conversion attempt that hit the crossbar saw the visitors up 20-10 at half time.

As the breeze strengthened to a gusty wind in their face in the second half, the Sharks needed to maintain their discipline and go on with maintaining their shape and go-forward. Unfortunately some unforced errors and some lapses in communication saw the home side quickly level up the scoreboard.

With 25 minutes to go Sharks centre Collis split the defence for his second try and with Tongia's conversion into the teeth of the wind, the score sat at 26-20.

Leilei and Leutele used their footwork and always threatened the line whilst Mannah continued his hard straight runs up the middle. Tongia took over the role of marshalling the troops around the paddock and left no-one in any doubt as to where they were meant to be. Mills failed to get quality ball but did diffuse a couple of difficult swirling high balls and was reliable in his kick returns.

Another powerful surge by the Magpies, some Sharks handling errors and a piggy-back penalty saw the home side back on top with two more unanswered converted tries and the scoreline ballooned out to 32-26 in favour of Wentworthville.

Mortimer added the extra point with a casual field goal in front of the 400-odd spectators who braved the conditions.

As the rain started to set in, the visitors made a last ditch drive to the line but a wayward pass saw the homeside get the competition two points on the buzzer in a game that featured a solid battle in the forwards.

Does anyone think that Lelei might be ready to take the utility spot on our first grade bench?

He just sounds like the type of player we need coming from the bench. Lets hope he gets a go soon.
