I checked the stats, we, as a team, made 13 kicks from 29 completed sets. That means we ran the ball on the last 16 times. Considering one of our strengths has been our short kicking game this year, no wonder we lost.

That's one of the more interesting, weirder stats I've heard. Cheers

Nightmares from the Newcastle game where the a second rower filling in at centre who looked like the lovechild of Heighno and a Morris was unbeatable with short kicks

No. Set restarts, penalties and tries all count as completed sets.

- There were 8 set restarts.
- There were 8 penalties, but one was with the Bulldogs in possession (KF obstruction) and one was after an error (KF vs WK), so only 6 count as completed sets.
- There were 2 tries.

8 + 6 + 2 = 16

This is why completion rate can be such a misleading stat. Getting a set restart on tackle 1 and then completing that set = 2 completed sets, even though you only had the ball for 6 ptb’s.

I did a review once of the completion rates for a full season without penalties included. Basically Melbourne were still way better than everyone, but the other 15 teams were all within a few % of each other. It’s the piggy-backs that make the difference.

All of the comments about the Bulldogs winning the forward battle are odd. They had 2 sets in the first half where they made good yards, but every other set where they started in their own end and got inside the Sharks 40 was from a penalty. Even on some of their 7 tackle sets or when they got set restarts they weren’t making good yardage.

Penalties - not soft forwards - was what got them down the Sharks end.

One thing I’m not sure of, is whether something like the first Hiroti no-try counts as complete or incomplete. They got to their kick, but then gathered it - and then knocked it on in the same play. Not sure how the stats people record something like that - or whether there is consistency game to game on how they do it.

That good start (even just a couple sets) gave them confidence and put us on the back foot, which leads to us giving away penalties.

No.

Those sets were at 12-0. One before the Hiroti no-try, and one (7 tackle set) after, which led to a repeat set (Tracey drop) and the third try. The sets to get them up 12-0 were from penalties.

The commentators were saying “look at all of these yards they are making” even when they weren’t. One set they made it from their 20 to 35 out from the Sharks line on a 7-tackle set and the commentators were lauding them. 55m in 6 plays is not bad, but it’s not fantastic either.

- A penalty got them down there for the 6-0 lead (Rudolf)
- A penalty got them down there for the 12-0 lead (Woods)
- Making 65m from a 7 tackle set followed by Tracey mishandling a kick got them in position to make it 18-0

Huh. Interesting... it definitely felt like we were getting rolled watching it. But then by 12-0 I was getting the familiar Sharks glaze and it all started to become a blur
