They always could though - at all levels of footy. Touch judge comes on and makes a report if he sees something.

The issue now is not the going back. It is that they have ignored this rule for 20 years and people think that is normal, and that the NRL have decided to 1) re-introduce it on a showcase weekend, and 2) let the video ref be part of it - which isn't supposed to be a thing.

This season we were supposed to see less video ref. Seems like they are now creating reasons to use it more often.

I can't ever recall seeing a touchie come on for something that happened a few tackles ago.

Anyway, it needs to be stopped. For all this talk about letting the game flow, wish they'd make up their mind.

Egg - I think you will find that Trindall is the player who has taken Billy's spot. Fifita was in the spot left vacant by injuries to BHU/Talakai.

Based on my own observations and also Hannay's post-game comments I would be very confident about Trindall being picked ahead of Magoulias moving forward.

True
But you'd think Fifita will definitely be in the 17 too
We thrived having some mongrel off the bench and the whole team lifted
You don't think he will be in the 17 and should be way ahead of Magoulias in pecking order ?
Wouldn't surprise me to see Trindall in the first 13 within 6 weeks

I think the ideal bench makeup is:

1. Forward
2. Forward
3. Forward or utility
4. Forward who can pass

I think Fifita is a better selection as a "forward" than Magoulias. I think based on the Souths game Trindall is the best option as a utility or a passing forward, and Magoulias is the next best. For me based on this there is never a "Fifita or Magoulias" situation. One is always better than the other based on which situation you are selecting them for.

I agree. I would like to see him used in this same role for now though, and the coach's comments seem to indicate this is the plan.

Cool
Yes as predicted Andrew played a game that Magoulias could only dream of.
He won't be back again unless there are injuries

Positives aside lets not get too far ahead of ourselves, I reckon Billy could dream of those stats

19 minutes
6 runs for 47 meters (average 7.8), 25 being post contact so breakdown is average 3.7m before contact 4.1 after contact. Also 14 were kick return meter so the hitup numbers are actually worse.
1 offload, 1 try assists and 6 tackles for 0 misses. 1 penalty.

Fifs could have dropped four balls and missed 10 tackles and egg would still praise him.

Yep, and Billy can have the least amount of missed tackles, the most amount of offloads, and the fastest ptb's for any forward other than Williams, and the whole forum will still bag him.

Does it get counted as a hit up .
When you charge down the bomb and pick up the crumbs for that try assist you mentioned ?
5 runs for 47m seems more like it .
The penalty was for over exuberence from the kick off to try and get the ball back .
Yes not ideal , but better than laziness like some forwards have produced in the past
Gotta give credit where credit due Chadley

You don't charge down your own teams bomb, yes, he did get to a contestable bomb though, and did good off it (what a great kick).
Regardless of what you think 'sounds more like it' the stats are the stats, I will accept they don't paint a full picture, not sure you can just decided which of them to count. To clarify him grabbing that ball was not a reception or a hitup.
If you take off his 14m kick return he had 5 hit ups for 33 meters.

And also so the penalty was okay because we needed to get the ball back (ref had literally just warned us to stay on side). Does Billy or Woods get a reprieve for dumb penalties if they are 'trying to get the ball back'?

Credit where credit is due, sure, not credit for the sake of you liking him better. Lets not pretend that was a shadow of 2016 Fifita

We all like watching him play I think, but the effort broke more parts than already were broken. I just can't see him lasting a month much less a season

Pre touchies being mic’d up, this was standard practice - but they had the option to come on immediately or to come on after a stoppage or change of possession. International Rules (not NRL rules) still have this in place, because the vast majority of RL games do not have mic’d up touchies.

The rule is:

Touchie comes on during play —> ref must blow a penalty
Touchie comes on during a stoppage —> up to ref’s discretion to blow a penalty

Fair enough mate, I must have a short memory.
