Norrie ends wait for worried Roos

GROUP 9 heavyweights Wagga Wagga Kangaroos have won the battle to sign former St George, Penrith and Sharks back-rower Bryan Norrie as their captain-coach.

The defending premiers clinched the deal with Norrie, on holiday in the US, by telephone on Friday after believing for most of the week he had agreed terms with Illawarra club Thirroul.

"He's agreed with us this morning and has already let the other clubs he was talking to know of his decision," Kangaroos official Geoff Honey said. We're obviously very excited about it and see him as a great replacement for Grant Wooden.

"The guy is only 26 and still in his prime and we consider him a current NRL player, given the fact he played something like 12 games last season. We were already looking at other options but it was disappointing because someone of Bryan's stature in the game doesn't come along very often. "I'm not sure what changed his mind. We were offering the coaching job and a few of the boys here are good mates with him from junior days. That may have had something to do with it."

It is understood as many as eight bush clubs had spoken to Norrie.

THIRROUL may have dipped out on Norrie but Illawarra rivals Dapto have got their man. The Canaries failed to make the play-offs last season and new captain-coach Mathew Head will be looking for far bigger things from his team in 2010.

It marks a return to his junior club for the former Dragons and Wests Tigers playmaker, whose NRL career was dogged by injury. It also continues a strong Dragons presence in the coaching ranks in the Wollongong-based competition. While Head is coaching Dapto, ex-Dragons Paul McGregor (Wests), Ryan Powell (Thirroul) and Stuart Webb (Helensburgh) are also involved with local clubs.

FORMER Manly international Nik Kosef, managing a hotel in Tamworth, has offered to lend his experience to the North Tamworth Bears coaching staff.

Kosef, a ball-playing back-rower who played Origin for NSW before representing Australia, was forced to retire at age 27 after a luckless run with injury that included four knee reconstructions. He played under some great coaches including Sea Eagles legend Bob Fulton. Kosef is understood to have touched base with Bears coach Mick Schmiedel after taking over at the Albert Hotel.

FORMER Mudgee Dragons stars Mat and Andy Stott will have a real baptism of fire when they debut for new club Dubbo Macquarie in 2010. Mat will captain-coach the Raiders in Group 11 and brother Andy has signed on as a player after both parted company with Group 10 premiers Mudgee. The Raiders have drawn Mudgee in the opening round of the Western Challenge pre-season competion.

ORANGE Cyms coach Michael Sullivan made an early impression on his new teammates at a bowls day recently to welcome the former Sharks and Bulldogs hooker to town. Besides having an outstanding knowledge of the game after playing under leading NRL coaches such as Steve Folkes and Kevin Moore, Sullivan showed he is more than a handy lawn bowler, cleaning up the locals on the day.
