CALOUNDRA Sharks coach Nick Paterson says he is considering a surprise return to the playing ranks.

Paterson, a former Cronulla Shark with two NRL games to his credit, hung up his boots after the 2008 season to concentrate on coaching duties.

However, after leading the side to the Caloundra RSL Cup premiership last year, he said his passion to take the field had been reignited.

“It was the success of the boys and what they did on the field,” he said.

“I loved watching them play and I wanted to be a part of it. “I’m only 30-years-old so I’ve got a few years left.”

Paterson said his decision to play this year would depend on the coaching structure at the club.

He officially retired after the Police World Cup – which was played on the Sunshine Coast – in November, 2008, after which he was named in the Police World XVII.

However, he took the field twice last year, during a Queensland Police intrastate carnival in Cairns and for the annual Queensland Police v New South Wales Police clash which served as a curtain-raiser to State of Origin III at Suncorp Stadium.

“Possibly,” he said when asked of the likelihood that he would play. “I’m just trying to get the coaching side of it right and make sure I’m right to play.

“I’m not going to do if it if I can’t get that right.”

Paterson said things were already looking bright for the Sharks’ premiership defence with most players already committing to return for the club.

The Sharks are tentatively set to kick off their season with a charity match against a Men of League All Stars team, comprised of former NRL players, in February.

In other Caloundra RSL Cup news, Mark Brandon has confirmed he won’t return to coach the Caboolture Snakes this year despite getting the side to within one game of the grand final last year.

Brandon will now take up a role at the Maroochydore Swans as an assistant to coach Darryl Johnson.

“It will work out well for me because I know Darryl and we seem to gel really well,” Brandon said.

“It’s also good for me because I’ve got other things on the go in my life so it’s a bit more suited to me.”

Bribie Island are also on the lookout for a new coach after Jason Broomham was released from his contract.

Broomham’s stint at the club was short lived after only taking over the role from Grant Leoni in May.
