Sharks Sign Storm Star Nicho Hynes

The Sharks have secured the services of Nicho Hynes, with the Storm star signing a three-year deal with the Cronulla Club.

The new contract, which will see Hynes join the Sharks for the start of their 2022 campaign, is for three years, running through until the end of the 2024 season.

The 24-year-old Hynes, who has shown his outstanding ability, as well as his versatility in recent weeks, was a member of the Storm 17 in the 2020 Grand Final and has played 22 NRL matches.

This year Hynes has scored three tries in 10 matches played, while providing 12 try assists and 16 line break assists. He has also kicked 12 goals in those 10 games.

A much sought-after player on the NRL open market, Hynes has chosen the Sharks ahead of several clubs who were chasing his services.

Hynes grew up on the Central Coast, played his junior rugby league for the Umina Beach Bunnies and Woy Woy Roosters, before signing with the Manly Holden Cup team in 2015.

He would play the 2017-18 seasons with the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup, then join the Melbourne Storm in 2019.

Hynes, who has been recruited to take on a position in the Sharks halves, compliments the recent signings of Toby Rudolf and Will Kennedy as incoming coach Craig Fitzgibbon continues to build his playing roster for the 2021 season and beyond.

Good to hear some of the older boys getting hands on with recruiting. Lewis and Gal then have big Fifita there to continue the drive.

Happy with this signature, well done all!

I’ll also throw in at event I went to pre 9s with some Sharks and Storm players the main Storm player to make an effort with fans was Nicho. Think all the sharks players made more of an effort than the rest of the storm players there (all low profile players). Blayke was also a standout.

The promised land is getting so much closer, doesn't seem so far now.

Now the question is, who do you pair him with next season. Looking at what we’ve got and what’s left on the open market my answer is Johnson. I don’t think a Hynes/Moylan combo will work. You could take the punt on Trindall, but if the chance is there to keep Johnson, I think we need to take it. Hynes/Johnson is a very well balanced combo IMO.

Last Thursday Hynes and his partner had lunch with Mace, chief executive Dino Mezzatesta, Gallen, Lewis and front-rower Andrew Fifita at the Pines restaurant on the Cronulla beach front.

I'd say Fifs ain't going anywhere.

I love that the club included Fifita, well done all around.

Such a good signing on so many Levels. Not least what it does for junior fan engagement. My young fella (7yrs ) is Sharky tragic and NRL statistician, but absolutely froths on Nicko Hynes ( and Pap’) even though they play for the storm.

There’s something about these young blokes with a bit of charisma that can draw the young kids in ! He squealed like girl when I just told him he’d be playing for us next year....... Okay, okay that might have been me who squealed like a girl..
