Official Nicho Hynes

Hynes has been under kicking the ball for years - you can tell he isn't putting 100% into his kicks and is holding himself back. Either that or he has one of the weirdest looking kicking actions going around - it always look like his is stabbing the kick, not kicking through the ball with full force

Either his leg still ain't right or he doesn't have full confidence in it anymore

This is my explanation for what we saw in 2022 compared to now because a clearing kick isn't so much about placement or timing with chasers as it is just booting the thing as far down field as possible which is what we needed but didn't get.

Storm got to begin their sets with a 10-20m head start which meant we were getting to our 5th tackle and kicking from even further back our next set with the ball and the cycle continued until there was a penalty or other stoppage to break things up

He did nail one a few weeks ago though

We should have been relying on Trindall more for kicking like against the Raiders but Storm rushed both of our halves on the 5th and maybe the way our sets played out Trindall wasn't in a good enough position so it went to Hynes

Still think we could have adjusted better throughout the game
Didn't help when Tricky ran it on the 4th and got tackled on our 40 metre line

I thought he did look for a pass though and we didn't have a runner.

Hynes used to cop flack for that occasionally 'a useless hitup by Hynes' but always (or near enough) it was because there wasn't someone in a better position to pass the ball to.

Runners missing assignments, poor communication, just a step off the pace due to fatigue, hard to tell what the cause is. It doesn't happen constantly or anything, but it did hurt us a bit right there, happening in a big game.

Funny how none of the press want to push AFB on this subject!

I can't agree more. I think we should employ an AFL kicking coach for him and that should be priority for this off season. If he can build a consistent 8/10 long kicking game it will take soooo much pressure off him and he won't need 2-3 LBA and 2-3 TA to be seen to have a good game... I don't reckon he and Tricky are either our main problem... But the combination is.. need some who can get us off the back foot, they are enough amazing front foot players.... If Hynes had a great long kicking game, that could be the difference

Nicho developing that long kicking, and Ronnie, Katoa and Stonestreet doing reps taking catches above their heads. Some AFL training across the board could go well in this space.

Katoa has been all over them the past couple weeks

(not saying he couldn't do more / keep working on it, but acknowledging he's taken some great catches at full stretch)

Sure has, mostly uncontested though, which is still great. We did pretty well to protect him in the finals.

Love the optimism, but the dude is 29 years old. What he has pretty much at this point isn’t changing at this stage in career. Hope I’m wrong. Maybe slight improvements in accuracy can be made but any improvements that can be made at this point are going to be from the cerebral part of the game (managing energy, reading the game, identifying weaknesses and strengths of teammates and opponents, leadership, etc). Would love to see him make that final step to greatness, and how much time and effort he wants to put forth will make the difference

I have backed Hynes but I think what we see now is what we are going to have to get used to , can't see much changing with the Hynes/Trindall combo , serviceable without being outstanding .
Unless something from right field happens , say Trindall moving and we got a substantial upgrade in a 7 and Hynes moved to 6 , then we need an X factor coming into the spine at fullback .

I mostly agree. Our spine played together for the whole season. Only team to keep its spine intact for throughout the competition.
It lead us to a Prelim on the back of good team performances.
But this team needs a genuine gamebreaker otherwise Prelim could be this team's ceiling.

1, 7 or 6 I don't know and I don't care, but something needs to be done.
How is for the club to decide as I'm sure they've already identified the missing piece(s).

I agree. Many of Hynes sideline goal kicks are on target but fade due to it seems not enough power in the kick

So apparently the mural of Nicho that got installed at the Umona Bunnies was been pulled down by the cricket club because the red clashes with the cricket ball making it hard for the batter to see.

Now there's a stink between the footy club and cricket club!

Cant they just cover it for a few hours whilst cricket is on?
