Official Nicho Hynes

I just hope he goes away in offseason and improves his goal kicking from the right touchline. He makes both of those last night, and psychologically it may have been a different game.

Probably.
And we would have declined the opportunity to take that penalty goal.

Melbourne did an us to us. The difference was probably the energy levels
I’ve seen a few energy / enthusiasm related call outs - personally I think it’s both harsh and baked in generalities.

How much distress we were under on our line all game, and the way we never gave up highlights to me we at the very least matched them in energy / enthusiasm.

We didn’t execute and it came back to bite us. Iro’s miss on their first try, Teig’s miss for Hughes’s try and Kennedy out of position for Paps try. That’s the game.

I don't feel like I'd used it as a generalisation, more that those misses and some uncharacteristic (well, for the finals) play was more the result of a bit of a fade from the (pretty extraordinary) heights we'd hit to get to Melbourne..Our halves were flat. Ronnie looked pretty beat fairly early... And I know they did a lot of defensive work, but I don't think they had as much in the tank as the past two weeks.

It still would have been incredibly close if not for some great plays by Melbourne's spine.

I would like him to put some serious effort into his running mechanics to get some more power and speed

Discipline is everything. Cut out the unforced errors, the unwarranted penalties, the poor / weak attempts in defence, and we could win that game despite the woeful goal kicking.

In saying that, having to play 2 finals games before we meet a fresh team would've taken its toll to some degree.

TBF, we only made 6 errors and completed at 87% (similar to the Storm) but the rest, 100% agree

That dropped ball by Nicho.

Felt like the last nail in the coffin at the time.
Very TRUE , hurt us all as fans.
At least to his credit Nicho maned up and owned it
RESPECT.

Post-match, Hynes cast a sad figure as he spoke to Channel 9.

“They are a quality opposition and we made it hard for ourselves at times,” he said.

“Sometimes you are just not good enough, and it is not your night.

“We were leading the second half 2-0 at some stage, and then I dropped that ball, made a bit of a crucial error and then (gave away) a penalty and then Briton’s offload.

“We just compounded errors, and that cost us in the end.”

He had a decent season, but as much as I keep banging on about it, it's time to remove the split sides for each half.

Unchain the bloke, let Trindall feed the ball and have Hynes and Kennedy run-a-muck

FTFY.

Might still be Kennedy, but it’s unclear

All season long, our attack has looked the most potent when Tricky & Nicho have combined together either side of the ruck.
I understand it's modern rugby league, but I positively hate the left/right split.

Have to offer threats both sides though, as well as using your space

No point cramming Trindall, Kennedy and Hynes on half a field then complaining Iro never gets any early ball or Ronnie runs out of room.

Two of them, especially with a link forward if it’s a big open side is ample, and someone to threaten down the blind if there is space.

The left right split happens more because they are defending that side. They aren’t going to be constantly running past each other to swap sides in attack. May also be those ‘sides’ due to how they pass or move.

I agree 💯 that you can't always have them attacking the same especially if there are short range options.

But with that, there have been times when both combined for the short raid and it worked.

Our attack this year was overly structured, teams figured out that rushing or putting pressure on Hynes and Trindall on their respective sides forced some questionable decisions.

Yeah kicking at 25% from out there, that's not good enough.
I don’t have stats on me so this is just the eye test critique but I reckon he underestimates his curl trajectory too often kicking on his wrong side.
I know he probably felt, he kicks the same line again on the second conversion attempt cause he took it back another 4-5m but it still was pretty much the same miss trajectory again.
Barring a stiff wind, his right side line attempts & aim should be at about 2m to the right of the right post.

I mostly understand the reasoning behind the left/right split, but sometimes I long for something less scripted and robotic.

I don't mean that we should play only off the cuff football, jungle ball (or whatever slightly offensive name) or even go for asinine ideas like Anderson's 1-marker strategy.
I'm convinced however that there's room for an innovative approach that might help us be less predictable.

Tactics & strategies in sports are essentially a matter of concepts & philosophy and trend.
Take wrestling in the ruck, most hate it (especially fans of the teams on the receiving end), but it's now a huge element of the game.

I wish we could, for once, be at the forefront of a shift that helps redefine the way the game is played.

Nichos biggest issue has always been, and it was blatantly clear in the preliminary, his mental state. If he can fix up his mental demons the skies the limit.

You could tell last few weeks that he temporarily shook off his demons as we were flying under the radar and we had a backs against the wall mentality. However the spot light was too strong in the prelim, and he was back to just shuffling the ball (until the final 2min)

He needs to see a sports psychologist (or change his existing) and get this fixed up in the off-season . Otherwise, I think time to shuffle him on
