That’s Dylan Coutts

Catching up with the young guns: Dylan Coutts

Standing 195cm tall and sporting a flowing mullet, there's no missing Dylan Coutts as he rips into his first NRL pre-season with the Sharks.
A strapping back-rower with ball-playing ability, Coutts made the move from the Sea Eagles ahead of the SG Ball (under 19s) season earlier this year.

Still growing into his 101kg frame, the 19-year-old has spent time with the Jersey Flegg (under 21s) squad and is now benefitting from training full-time alongside seasoned NRL players as he prepares to make the jump to senior football.
"It's been good being back training. Especially with all the older boys coming back now, it's been an eye opener," said Coutts, a Narrabeen Sharks junior.
"It's so cool being around all those boys (who are established in first grade), they're so experienced. It's good to just watch how they prepare."
Coutts said he was enticed to trade the northern beaches for the shores of Cronulla by "the opportunity here that wasn't at Manly".
"And just learning about the club and the culture was what got me to move over. I was really impressed by that," he added.
Having played five-eighth in his younger days, Coutts possesses plenty of skill but is focused first and foremost on "running hard lines" and his defence.
Eligible for Jersey Flegg for the next couple of years, Coutts isn't getting ahead of himself heading into 2024. A NSW Cup debut for the Newtown Jets is in his sights.
"Just to stay regular in Flegg and maybe push for a few reserve-grade games would be pretty cool. Just playing the best footy I can would be ideal," he said.
In his spare time, Coutts is a keen fisherman who enjoys getting down to the beach.
"I try to surf but I'm not very good at it," he laughed. "I love being around the water."

Mmm the old Narrabeen Sharks. Would've thought the only other recent player originally from that Comp which played for us, would've been Cuthbo.

Do you mean to replace Teig or don’t rate Coutts?

He's saying to replace Teig.

Haven't seen you here before mate, Welcome by the way, so don't expect your familiar with Wade Graham's jealous husband.

from the nswrl website regarding sam mcculloch as a player to watch

Last season was successful across the board for Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, finishing runners up in NRLW, NRL Preliminary Finalists, UNE Harold Matthews Cup Semi-finalists, and Premiers in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup with feeder club the Newtown Jets.

But among all that came a nine-game winning run late in the season by the Sharks Jersey Flegg Cup (Under 21s) side, skippered by lock forward Sam McCulloch, to make a Grand Final appearance on Sunday 29 September up against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

They mightn’t have come away with the win in the end but the Sharks performance throughout the year was just another example of the depth of young talent coming through at the Shire, and McCulloch is one of those.

A local junior out of St John Bosco-Como, McCulloch has been highly touted at the Sharks for several years. He was named their UNE Harold Matthews Cup Player of the Year in 2021.

Since then he has plied his trade through the Junior Representative system and was elevated to captain of the Jersey Flegg side in 2024. Following their Grand Final appearance McCulloch claimed the Gavin Miller Award for Jersey Flegg Cup Player of the Year.

His 27 games in the past season was equal-first in the competition, along with 748 tackles (second) averaging 28, 3,141 run metres (third) averaging 116. McCulloch also managed two tries, two try assists, four line-breaks and 46 tackle-busts.

On top of his leadership quality, McCulloch possesses the work rate and durability required of a middle forward in today’s game, which puts him in good stead for higher honours in the near future.

Now heading into the second season of a recent two-year extension with the Sharks and having yet to appear at NSW Cup level, McCulloch will be one to look out for in 2025.

He was a stand out in the pack in that side. Hope we can keep him long term to see him develop here.
