Muswellbrook Public's shot at state

The Muswellbrook Public School open rugby league side have battled their way into the state final for the very first time.

Six hundred teams from across the state signed up at the start of the year and the Muswellbrook side has now made it all the way to the final two.

After winning through the Upper Hunter, Hunter and wider Hunter and Central Coast region the team began taking on teams from further away.

They paid no attention to the increased pressure but they did put plenty of pressure on their opposition.

In their most recent match on Monday they were able to defeat Wauchope to claim their spot in the grand final.

Team coach Jeff Drayton said the whole team was in impressive form in their semifinal.

“At half time they were leading 12-6 and they picked it up again in the second to keep Wauchope scoreless and win 36-6,” he said.

The win is not only exciting in the fact that they will play in the grand final but they will also play it on the same field the Cronulla Sharks play on.

The team will compete against a school from south Wagga Wagga on Tuesday with other grand finals including the under 14s, opens and elite schools.

Mr Drayton said it would be a huge opportunity for the boys in the team.

“There will be lots of NRL players and talent scouts,” he said.

“I don’t think they even realise the scale of it all.

“It is the first time the school has ever had a team in the grand final and they are sending down a bus of about 50 kids to cheer them on.”
