Minor premiers Cronulla were eliminated from the 1988 finals by Balmain, 9-2. The Sharks played very well but once again had no luck, with Rothmans Medal winning halfback Barry Russell treated twice for a shoulder injury in the first 13 minutes, before being replaced at half-time.
