MICHAEL Greenfield switched clubs more than a confused weekend golfer, but the South Sydney has been identified as one of the Rabbitohs' X-factors ahead of their clash with the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.

The 22-year-old, having played just 13 NRL games, has switched NRL clubs four times in the past three seasons, but after bouncing back and forth between Cronulla and the Rabbitohs he's settled alongside big Roy Asotasi to lead the imposing Souths pack.

While skipper Asotasi is widely considered the man who provides the most drive forward for the Rabbitohs, Greenfield has developed a reputation as a dangerous ball-player with an uncanny ability to offload in the tackle.

In last week's loss to the Roosters Greenfield had more minutes, offloads, linebreak assists, ball carries, tackle breaks and metres gained than his New Zealand Test teammate.

Souths built a lot of momentum off the back of Greenfield's five offloads last week, a fact not lost on Bulldogs skipper Andrew Ryan who knows shutting down the little-known prop will be just as important as stunting the tireless efforts of Asotasi.

"They've got some big boys that are playing pretty good. Michael Greenfield and Roy Asotasi have been playing really well for a long time so it's going to be a big challenge for us," Ryan said.

"I watched (Greenfield) play in the Charity Shield. There's been a fair few raps on him from the preseason he's had. He is definitely a compulsive offloader and seems to spark a lot of their play.

"(Asotasi) is a great player and hopefully we can try to limit some of his offloads as well because he is very skilful and has good footwork.

"Defensively we know we have to be on song."

Bulldogs forward Brad Morrin was called into the squad as 18th man, on standby for Kiwi international Sonny Bill Williams as he battles an upper calf strain.

South Sydney have prepared themselves to face Williams, but are more focussed on claiming their first win of the year whether or not the superstar takes the field.

While the Dogs started with a flurry but faded in last week's loss to the Eels, the Rabbitohs were sluggish early and finished strongly to almost conjure a come-from-behind win.

Fixing a poor start is much easier than dealing with second half fatigue and Souths hooker Issac Luke says his team must learn to be more composed early in the game and then over-run the Bulldogs.

"Every team comes out flying, all we have to do is weather the storm and maybe have a bit of finesse this week and maybe build up a bit later in the game," Luke said.

"It's about our first half and how do we go about it. We have to complete all our sets and have ball control, pretty much the opposite of what we did against the Roosters.

"We need to complete our sets and then maybe we'll come away with a win and two points."

Dragons' recruits hit training paddock
November 24, 2009 » 12:37pm

With the spotlight having been on who's not playing for St George Illawarra in 2010, the NRL club's recruits have quietly had the first day on their new jobs.

Wendell Sailor is gone, Justin Poore and Chase Stanley likewise, but for Michael Greenfield, Junior Paulo, Peni Tagive and Jack Bosden life in the red and white is just beginning.

That Dragons coach Wayne Bennett is pinning his hopes on this year's squad getting better is clear from his low key recruitment.

Greenfield, 24, is a talented but injury-plagued prop who previously played for Cronulla and joins the Dragons from South Sydney.

Paulo, 26, is a prop or second-rower from Parramatta, while big 21-year-old winger/centre Tagive joins from the Wests Tigers and 20-year-old back-rower Bosden from the Sharks.

A NECK injury threatened to stop Michael Greenfield's career before it really began but the St George Illawarra recruit hopes his injury curse is over.

Greenfield looms as a contender to replace Parramatta-signed NSW Origin prop Justin Poore in the Dragons No.8 jersey.

The former Westfield Sports High student joined the Dragons in October and has been in full-contact training since November.

Searing pains in his arm, as a result of a bulging disc in his neck, required surgery and he missed most of last year.

"Anything to do with your neck is pretty scary,'' Greenfield said.

"The doctors went through every possible worst-case scenario but I was pretty confident that I'd play again.

"After the surgery I asked the doctor if I could play again and he said I was fine. So I didn't ask again.''

Off-contract at the end of last season Greenfield feared the injury might force him out of the spotlight and out of the NRL.

"A lot of blokes in the NRL were being let go and not picked up,'' he said.

"The Dragons were willing to have a crack at me and it's given me a bit of confidence.

"Everything happens for a reason and now I'm being coached by the best coach in the game.''

Greenfield signed a one-year deal with an extra season option in the club's favour for 2011.

The 109-kilogram giant made his NRL debut for the Sharks as an 18-year-old in 2004 before playing 24 games with South Sydney.

"I probably wasn't really ready to play at that age,'' Greenfield said.

"They threw me in for a crack and I got my chance a bit earlier than what I would've if the club were going well.''

Greenfield, Dan Hunt, Trent Merrin and Jarrod Saffy will battle it out to partner NSW prop Michael Weyman in the starting pack.

MICHAEL Greenfield has played in one Charity Shield match but the clash this year looms as the most important game of his career.

Greenfield said the Dragons took a "punt'' on him after the prop joined the club from South Sydney. He has not played first grade since 2008 because of a serious neck injury.

He has emerged as a leading candidate to replace NSW prop Justin Poore.

"My fitness is up there with the best its been,'' Greenfield said. ``[Poore] is a different player to me. I'll just be happy to get as fit as I can and play my best football. I think if I do that then I'll give myself every chance of being in the team.''

Greenfield's has been back in full contact since November with his neck is holding up to the daily grind of training.

Michael Greenfield returns with a flourish
BY MICHAEL CARAYANNIS
20 Apr, 2010 11:35 AM

THE clash against Gold Coast Titans on Friday night was worth more than just two competition points for prop
forward Michael Greenfield.

It signalled an end to his 19-month wait to add to his 25-NRL first-grade game tally.

In between his last appearance for South Sydney on August 9, 2008, Greenfield suffered a near-career-ending neck injury as a result of a
bulging disc.

This year he has ground away for the St George Illawarra feeder club Shellharbour Marlins in the NSW Cup before being called on to make his Dragons debut in its 19-6 win against the Titans.

But Greenfield said he had been relaxed heading into the match.
"I knew what my role was going to be,'' he said.

"I was more excited than anything.

"To an extent [it was like making my debut all over again] because it had been that long.

"I forgot how fast the game is. That was a bit of a wake-up call.''
The former Westfield Sports High student made his NRL debut for the Sharks as an 18-year-old in 2004, before linking with the Rabbitohs.

He was part of a Dragons' squad which took on the Queensland-based club minus representative trio Michael Weyman (suspended), Jeremy Smith, and Nathan Fien (both injured), along with fellow injured players Matt Prior and Jarrod Saffy.

"It was a gutsy win,'' said Greenfield.

"It wasn't the prettiest of wins but we ground it out.
"There was plenty of talk in the middle of the field with blokes like Dean Young and Jamie Soward keeping my mind on the job.''

Noted as a ball-playing prop, Greenfield has spent the majority of the NSW Cup season playing at lock. Despite playing in a No.13 jersey he has played as a tight forward in the middle of the field, and as prop on Friday night.
"I think I'm more of a front-rower.

"The lock's role is pretty similar these days where you attack and defend in the middle.''

The Dragons will welcome back Weyman for the annual Anzac Day clash against Sydney Roosters on Sunday with Greenfield, Ricky Thorby or Trent
Merrin likely to drop out of the 17.

The 192-centimetre giant was still hindered by his neck injury during the early part of this season.

"The neck is really good,'' he said.

"I got a bit of soreness and stif**ess the first few games, but the physiotherapist said that was to be expected. In the past few games I haven't even noticed it.''

He has a one-year deal with an extra season option in the club's favour.

GREEN & GREENFIELD RE-SIGN WITH DRAGONS

GREEN & GREENFIELD RE-SIGN WITH DRAGONS
31/08/2010 4:50:37 PM

The St George Illawarra Dragons have today announced that Props Jon Green and Michael Greenfield have both re-signed with the Club for a further season, until the end of the 2011 season.

Green, 25, is currently in his third season at the Dragons after making his NRL debut for the Bulldogs in Round 2 of season 2006 against the Tigers.

Since joining the Dragons in season 2008 the Queensland born West Australian junior has played 26 games in the red and white and is happy to be remaining at the Club.

“I’m extremely happy at the Dragons and have managed to play a number of games this year in the NRL which I’ve really enjoyed,” Green said. “My family and I are settled in Wollongong and to continue working under Wayne (Bennett) is something that really made my decision easy.”

Greenfield, 24, joined the Dragons this year after four seasons at the Rabbitohs where his game time was limited due to a neck injury. The Ingleburn RSL junior started his NRL career with two seasons at the Sharks (2004-2005) where he made his NRL debut against the Roosters in Round 22 of season 2004.

Greenfield who has played seven NRL games this season is also happy to have his future sorted at the Club.

“Coming to the Dragons has been great for me personally, I came here off the back of a serious injury and am now probably the fittest I’ve been in a number of years,” said Greenfield. “Although I haven’t played as much NRL as I would’ve hoped to, being able to work with Bennett is something that has helped me both on and off the field.”

Coach Bennett was happy that both Green and Greenfield had chosen to stay at the Club.

“The contribution and commitment from both Jon and Michael has been pleasing and I am happy that they have chosen to stay at the Dragons,” Bennett said.
