Please no Jock Madden. He’s Shaun Berrigan 2.0. Will make a decent NRL player somewhere but not in the halves.
I actually like that the NRL is finally starting to penalise when players run behind their own guys. I think it’s great for the game overall. That’s the stupid bit.
We are at the mercy of the whim of the bunker.
One day it’s ok, another not!
Common sense needs to be allowed to rule on plays like that.
This is what turns people off. It’s the lack of common sense within the rules.
Not to mention the camera angle used by the video ref could have made it seem worse than it was. The gap between Kennedy and Saifiti may have been 2-3 m but the angle made it look much closer.
Saifiti didn’t even show any grievance, didn’t throw his hands up, or gesture that he was inhibited.
Similar to the obstruction rule in the Souths game, but there was at least a touch.
Even still the defender got a full crack at the tackle but wasn’t good enough.
Common sense tells you that it should have been allowed!
But………. Well………you know! Common sense doesn’t apply nowadays!
Could you even do an old fashioned run-around these days?I actually like that the NRL is finally starting to penalise when players run behind their own guys. I think it’s great for the game overall.
Any time the NRL does something like this (actually starts following the rule book) there is flow-down effect to other levels. Ball carriers running behind their own players is something 99% of refs at lower levels flat out ignore even when it blatantly obstructs multiple players.
It needs fixing, so if it takes an NRL crackdown for refs at other levels to learn/apply the rules I say bring it on.
Properly executed, sure.Could you even do an old fashioned run-around these days?

Personally I don’t even think it’s necessary for someone to have been obviously obstructed. A defensive line is a unit. If one guy has to stop, adjust, and plants his feet for 2 seconds because someone 3m away from him runs behind a teammate - it holds up the bloke next to him, and it is dominoes down the line.I’m not against the rule if it truly impedes a defender.
It‘s the ones where there is no real chance of them getting to the ball carrier but to the “letter of the law (rules)” is ruled as obstruction and gets pulled up.
I just would like some common sense applied.
Yes, ball carrier did go behind a player and yes the defender may have had another attacking player between him and the ball carrier (who may have or may not have touched), but there was still no way in hell they were ever getting to the ball carrier. Yet. Penalty or disallowed try.
Just my opinion.
I heard somewhere (here?) the idea that some defending players were consciously adjusting their positioning to put players on the penalising shoulder. Very smary if true, but just another example of how the rule just doesn't work.Personally I don’t even think it’s necessary for someone to have been obviously obstructed. A defensive line is a unit. We are talking about scenarios where half a step is the difference between making the tackle or not. One guy being held up by 2 seconds matters, even it is not where the runner goes through the hole.
Imo any time someone runs behind their own bloke and it causes the opposition to make a defensive decision it should be a penalty. Video ref has mangled would should be a really simple rule by introducing all the inside/outside/advantage nonsense. Forcing the defence to make a decision they wouldn’t have otherwise made IS an advantage.
Yeah I think there is a bit of that. Can’t remember who last week but someone had a guy run at his inside (right) shoulder and made a deliberate movement in front to contact him with the left. If the guy had the ball there is no way he would have wanted to tackle with his left. It was a pretty clear move to milk a penalty - and it worked.I heard somewhere (here?) the idea that some defending players were consciously adjusting their positioning to put players on the penalising shoulder. I know this won’t be popular, but I’m happy to take a different stance on this one.Personally I don’t even think it’s necessary for someone to have been obviously obstructed. Made some decent 1 on 1 tackles alsothe 2 passes he threw for trys in the first half were excellent. on the one where ronnie kicked back in mozza saw half a gap open up but re-accessed it, stepped inside and threw a beautiful pass out to Ronnie
took some big hits too but didn't lose the ball in those tackles
was bit of a ghost first part of second half but came back into the fold. overall a good game
Yep.Another game to prove his detractors (including myself) wrong.
Good on him.
