This team isn’t beating top 8 sides. So while Hynes looks good beating teams out of the 8, until we are beating those top 8 teams, we have to question his ability to control a game as a 7 and not crumble under pressure when the team needs some direction.

You mean, You question his ability to do everything himself……

He needs a half that will contribute and is not dead weight, his current partner is ONLY good for “ a decent pass when he digs into the line…”

Too much deadwood currently both Graham and Moylan are well and truly beyond it….at least Cronulla is in a good position of having readily available strong players to fill their positions…….oh wait let’s not play them until they get the jack of it and leave (Like Metcalf)

Say we had a controlling solid type of 7 and then you have Nicho playing 6.

Maybe Nicho has a bit more energy (he's fit anyway) and plays a bit more consistent hypothetically with less errors or whatever, I reckon with him touching the ball less and having less duties he probably becomes less effective anyway

It's because he's running, scheming, kicking, passing every set is what makes him so dangerous

On the other hand if we were to say that his role and style of play doesn't change then what was the point bringing in a controlling solid type half to partner him

I guess there is 2 schools of thought on it - giving Nicho the opportunity to chose his moments vs. Nicho having as many moments as possible.

And with how much good stuff he creates it's not that straightforward to argue he needs to be doing less although I can understand game management being a potential weak point he has plenty of time to improve that.

I think the whole team could do with a lesson on game management and playing the % at times though but it doesn't seem to be our style. Just going down a gear a bit with the ball when appropriate.

But if it's about just kicking to corners and pinning a team in the 10m off the kick Nicho can already do that.
It’s not about him being able to do it, it’s about him not having to be the only half in the team able to do it.

At the moment he has to be in all places at all times. In essence, he can’t get tackled on the fourth, that’s a concern.

Bringing someone in who is able to shoulder some of that responsibility when required, ala Trindall, is the best way to unlock Nicho.

As I said, he still gets to play whatever he wants, still is the dominant half and gets the ball when called, but he will no longer need to be everywhere, doing everything.

I think it’s a bit stiff to draw a straight line from not beating some of the top teams this year to Nicho’s game management.

Defence, handling and discipline have lost us those games, not him.

I’m not blaming the losses on Hynes. I’m just saying he has to be everywhere all the time, and like you said above and like I also have said before, he can’t get tackled on the 4th knowing he is the one that has to kick next tackle.

There have been times where we have needed some game management, and Hynes looks ragged and erratic trying make something happen along with steer the team around. That’s where we need a game managing 7 that can take over all of the half back chores, and Hynes can concentrate on inserting himself and others around him into point scoring opportunities.

man, thats a bad stretch to make
Genuinely curious, if Hynes is the best 7 in the comp, wouldn’t he have played 7 in game 1?

Or are you saying he wasn’t picked because of loyalty to Cleary and/or the Penrith connection?

Both. Wouldn't matter if the general consensus is that Nicho is the best number 7. Freddie and the selectors pick the team, and they'll choose whoever they want to choose.

Put Hynes at 5-8, he will still perform and continue to elevate his game, rack up dally M points, and become first choice blues no.6 over everyone else 😎👍🏾

Time to move on from this halves combo, Hynes is in his prime, cant waste another year with the same results

Don't worry mate, Cleary is the better halfback.
Not a chance in hell he is

He is great at Penrith when he has a cheat code of a forward pack

Look how bog average he was for Australia and NSW

There isnt a thing he can do that Nicho cant

Nichos passing is waaaaaay better and his overall attacking bag shits on cleary

Cleary got picked because he plays for the best team
Take him out of it and he is a Jeff Robson with hair and a **** off chin

Yeah as a halfback, he is. Don't really care what he does at rep level, I'm talking purely NRL.

Nicho is more a hybrid 5/8/halfback imo.

Definitely not underselling Nicho, but I reckon most would rate chin nuts as the better halfback.

They are very different types of players. I think they would work well together.
