Mark Wakefield missed 12 weeks on the sidelines after a high tackle by Steve Mortimer at Belmore, and though Mortimer was suspended for 9 weeks, it was little justice for Wakefield who felt the effects of the severe concussion for three years (from 'The Sharks: Colour Me Black, White and Blue'), badly hampering his career.

Canterbury were criticised constantly by opposition clubs and supporters throughout 1986 for their tactics.

Jack Gibson said "spotting" the opposition playmaker was "their whole game plan."

"When I coach against a Ryan-coached side I tell my playmakers to keep out of the way," said Gibson.

"I told Mark Wakefield... under no circumstances are you to run the plan from a tap for about 15 minutes... but he went against my instruction.

"I've lost quite a number of men playing against Ryan's teams."

the dogs were just brutal. Dogs of war as they were known. It was a tough era back then. No time for knitting lessons, footy was footy, players got hurt in every game.

The dogs were just tougher and gave more than they got.
