Magpies' fightback falls short

A SPIRITED fightback by Western Suburbs Magpies wasn't enough to prevent defeat at the hands of the Newtown Jets in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Magpies started well with an early try to Ben Yelavich, but things started to unravel after Wests centre Walter Imo was almost pushed into touch and threw a wild pass that was snatched by a Newtown player.
This marked the beginning of a Jets scoring spree that left them leading 24-4 at half time.
Wests raced back into the match with 20 unanswered points in the second half.
But the Jets blitzed the Magpies' defence and scored five tries in the closing stages of the match to win 46-28.
Meanwhile, the Magpies Jersey Flegg side suffered an agonising 28-26 defeat against the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday after leading for most of the match.
The Sharks snatched victory in the dying stages of the match with a couple of quick tries and a conversion from the sideline.
The Magpies had dominated early in the match, playing exciting football to open up a 16-4 lead late in the first half.
The Sharks came back to level the score early in the second half, before two barnstorming tries gave the Magpies what seemed to be an unassailable 26-16 lead.
But some Magpies mistakes in the closing moments of the games allowed the Sharks to secure a late victory.
