Cronulla came firing out of the blocks for the second clash of the day. From the kick-off some physical shots had the Sea Eagles side reeling and a mistake from the first set had an already fired up Cronulla side even more eager. There wasn’t much the Manly defence could do to stop the Sharks first try with five-eighths Sam Clune’s cut-out passing landing on the chest of Luke Pickerd who crossed untouched out wide.

Manly settled the storm and the game was again in the balance. Both sides, much like the Harold Matthews, found it hard to control the footy and a penalty count in favour of the home team wasn’t making it any easier for the boys from Brookvale. With the Sharks having the bulk of possession it was a surprise to all that Manly were the next team to score.

From the scrum Manly immediately spread the ball wide and found success through winger Maroun Estephan who fended off his opposing number to get the Sea Eagles first of the morning.

A late penalty goal saw Cronulla take a narrow 4-point lead into the sheds at halftime.

After the break it was penalties again cost the Sea Eagles, and after two consecutive infringements the Sharks were over again with Luke Pickerd being on the end of a slick move down the left touchline to score.

Manly again were forced to fight there way back and well placed kick on last tackle from five-eighth Luke Keary meant that centre Kayse Greer only have to dive on the ball to score. And when halfback Josh Drinkwater converted from sideline the Sharks lead was cut to 12-10 with just 15 minutes to play.

For the first time in the game the momentum was finally with the Sea Eagles as they looked sharp in attack and hit the tiring Sharks outfit hard in defence, but it was poor handling that let the resurging Sea Eagles down as they failed to hit that knockout blow, and after a soft error from Manly inside their own 10 late in the game resulted in a try Sharks five-eighth Sam Clune, the match was sealed.

Both teams face the Bulldogs at The Crest Stadium in Bass Hill with times TBA.

Fulltime
Manly 10 (Maroun Estephan, Kayse Greer tries; Josh Drinkwater ½ goals)
Def by.
Cronulla 16 (Luke Pickerd 2, Sam Clune tries; James Hasson 2/3, Snesiasi Mataitonga 0/1 goals)

NEW Dragons under-20s coach Adrian Lam is easing into the head coaching position minus a stack of last year's National Youth Cup (NYC) stars.

Impressive forwards Trent Merrin and Jake Marketo have been promoted to the NRL squad and outside backs Joe Vickery (NRL), Dean Whare (Manly) and Kane Linnett (Roosters) have moved on.

Lam could also lose NYC player of the year Beau Henry who may be pushed to the Dragons feeder club Shellharbour in preparation for first grade.

"It is something Wayne Bennett will have to make a decision on,'' Lam said.

Lam, the former Queensland Origin half, takes over from the Dragons inaugural NYC coach Steve Price, who is now a full-time assistant to NRL head coach Bennett.

He will rely on Hurstville United five-eighth Kyle Stanley to guide the team around.

Tanley is joined by fellow St George juniors Kyle Mallyon (Kingsgrove Colts), Ernie Ciaschetti (Penshurst RSL) and Kane Gillies (Hurstville United).

"The thing that I've picked up is the amount of respect they have for the place,'' Lam said.

After the side finished one game short of the grand final in successive years, Lam has spent some time with the first grade side, including work with half Jamie Soward. "Soward had a great year last year but this year is probably the most important for him.

"I've done a bit of vision work with him,'' he said.

A household name in his native Papua New Guinea, Lam hopes to form a relationship between the Pacific island nation and the Dragons, after coaching PNG to win the Pacific Nations Cup, and securing a spot in the Four-Nations tournament at the end of this year against

Australia, New Zealand and England.

Dragons Under 20's: Chris Astill, Jared Brodrick, Sam Campbell, David Caterall, Ernie Ciaschetti , Jayden Dallalana, Jack De Belin, Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa, Kane Gillies, Tom Hancock, Josh Heggie, Beau Henry, Nathan Jones, Cameron King, Justin King, Kyle Mallyon, Simon Maslanka, Alex McKinnon, Mitchell Nielsen, Blake Phillips, Luke Pickerd, Max Ray, Mitch Rein, Travis Roche, Scott Rosser, Jackson Russell, Trent Ryan, Kyle Stanley, Jack Stockwell, Wes Suckley, Jarrod Thompson, Shannon Wakeman.

In the SG Ball match the Sharks were there own worst enemy in the early exchanges, turning over far to much football to their opponents, with Norths scoring wide out to opening the scoring. However when the Sharks managed to hold onto some ball and gain better field position they took control of the contest, eventually running in seven tries in the win.

The Sharks were well served by centre Luke Pickerd, who crossed the stripe twice, fullback Nesiasi Matiatonga always looked dangerous with the ball in his hands, while Penani Manu added the touches of class from half back. Joel Tubbs and Rod Coates toiled hard in the forwards.

Both Sharks junior rep teams now move on to important games against Illawarra next week in matches to be played at Toyota Stadium.

The Sharks under-18 SG Ball side continued its march to the semi finals with a hard fought 18-16 victory over fellow finals contenders the Canterbury Bulldogs, while the Matthews Sharks were beaten 30-22 in a matches played at Terry Lamb Complex at Chester Hill on Thursday night.

The Sharks have struggled to overcome the Bulldogs in the past but in a game bringing the second and third placed sides together it was destined to become a cracker.

It was the Sharks who always seemed to hold the upper hand, building on a 6-0 lead at the half time break, before going ahead 12-4, then 18-10, however a late Bulldogs try brought the home team within two points but the Sharks held firm during a tense final few minutes to record an impressive victory.

The Sharks forwards stood up against a bigger opposition pack, while in the backs the likes of winger Ben Stratton and Daniel Moroko, along with centre Luke Pickerd, relieved many a dangerous situation while threatening the Bulldogs defence on numerous occasions with clever ball running. Halves Penani Manu and Sam Clune also controlled proceedings well in leading their team to victory.

The Sharks SG Ball side has finished in first position after the end of the regular season following a 44-0 drubbing of South Sydney in their round nine match at Toyota Stadium.

The Sharks ran up a 20-0 half time advantage and went on with the job in the second half in running in nine tries in the match, centre Luke Pickerd crossing for three four pointers in taking his tally for the year to 13 from the nine games played. Daniel Moroko also grabbed a double in an impressive performance on the wing.

The young Sharks will now face the eight-placed team in the first round of finals matches next weekend and with the NSWRL junior reps now adopting the McIntyre semi final system will recieve a weeks rest should they win or a second chance if the result next week does not go their way.

The news wasnt so good for the Harold Matthews Cup side who were on the end of a similar scoreline in going down to Souths by 46-6. The Sharks, who were without a handful of players through injury, battled hard but were no match for the speed and power of their opponents.

Luke Pickerd must be some kind of freak, he has scored tries in just about every game. Surely he is destined for first grade and must be signed up long term.

Howlett Praises Sharks Junior Leagues

Cronulla SG Ball coach Dave Howlett says his side's record-breaking season is testament to the strength of junior rugby league in The Shire.

The 2010 line-up will forever be remembered as the first Sharks team in the history of the competition to finish alone in top spot at the end of the home-and-away rounds.

The last team to finish on top of the ladder was in 1969, when the Sharks finished equal first after a four-round competition. However, things have certainly changed since then and the junior Sharks are looking to build on from their consistent regular season performance.

The talented outfit enters the finals series full of confidence having won its previous seven matches, as it goes in search of the club's inaugural SG Ball premiership.

"I've been at the Sharks for a long time and haven't exactly had winning seasons every year so it's been exciting to win some games and everyone's looking forward to seeing what happens over the next couple of weeks," Howlett said.

"It speaks volumes for the junior leagues."

"We have got a couple of outside-area signings to fill positions that we couldn't get from the junior leagues."

"Our junior rep teams have always had good players but we've just struggled with size and we're fortunate this year we've got two boys that have come down from the Under 20's, one's a front rower (Tyrone Viiga) and the other one's a second rower (Rodney Moefaauo), that have just enabled our local boys to play the footy that they can."

"The vast majority of the team is local juniors and it speaks volumes for how strong our junior league is."

Howlett's charges will earn a spot in the grand-final qualifier - and a week off - with a win over Canterbury-Bankstown on Saturday.

But the coach, in his first season at the helm of the SG Ball side, is expecting a tough assignment.

"We actually played the Bulldogs three weeks ago and it was three-tries all and we just got them 18-16," he recalled.

"They've been the hardest team we've played and the toughest opponent we've had this year, so we know we're a good team but we also know Canterbury are very good and it's going to be really tough."

While confident his team is capable of going all the way this season, Howlett admits any of the eight remaining sides are genuine title contenders.

"We are a good team but it's really, really tight between the top-eight teams," he explained.

"If we had have lost last week we could have finished eighth, so the top-eight are all super competitive."

"If you spoke to every coach of all the eight teams they'd all tell you they're a chance of winning the whole thing, and they are."

"We're as good a chance as any obviously but it's going to be really, really hard."

"You've got to win three games (to win the premiership) but someone's got to do it so hopefully it'll be us."

CRONULLA Sharks under-18 SG Ball side is flying the flag for the region in the junior representative semi-finals series starting this weekend.

The Sharks under 18s finished as minor premiers, with just one loss from nine matches St George Dragons U16 and U18 teams and the Sharks U16 sides didn't make the finals.

The Sharks squad is coached by Endeavour Sports High's David Howlett.

"We've had a lot of losing seasons so it's nice to win some games,'' Howlett said.

"The squad is mostly Cronulla juniors, with a few out-of-area players.''

Cronulla, who have never won the SG Ball, tackle Canterbury at Kogarah Jubilee Stadium, 1.30pm this Saturday, a team they earlier nudged out 18-16. ``I think we're a real chance of winning, although Canterbury are the best team we've played,'' Howlett said.

Cronulla finished the regular season with the best defensive record, with only four points separating the top eight teams. NSW Rugby League has adopted the AFL finals format, which prevents the top four teams being knocked out in the first week of finals, with the bottom four playing elimination matches.

1. Nesiasi Mataitonga 2. Zach Rasmussen 3. Daniel Moroko 4. Luke Pickerd 5. Ben Stratton 6. Sam Clune 7. Penani Manumalealii (c) 8. Tyrone Viiga 9. Brendan Sexty 10. Joel Tubbs 11. Sharks SG Ball Set Sights On Prize

Sharks SG Ball Set Sights On Prize
16/04/2010 9:31:10 AM

The Hisense Sharks SG Ball side may have already achieved the feat of becoming the first team in club history to finish as minor premiers... but it won't all stop there.

Eager to carve out another piece of club history, the boys from “The Shire” in Sydney’s south head into the finals series as competition favourites after a thumping South Sydney 44-0 victory last weekend.

Throughout the season the Sharks recorded wins against competition heavyweights Roosters, Storm and Bulldogs. Their only loss was in round two when Penrith defeated them 30-24 in a tight battle at CUA Stadium.

Despite the excitement surrounding the club, coach Dave Howlett and his side aren't getting ahead of themselves too soon.

They know they have a tough run ahead, especially coming up against an intimidating Bulldogs outfit who they only beat by two points earlier in the season.

One player who will be looking to continue on with his good form is Luke Pickerd. The livewire centre has provided fans with glimpses of utter brilliance this season with a number of four-pointers in the bag.

He joined the Sharks from St George, a team which ironically finished as minor premiers in the SG Ball competition last season, to help steer the side towards a long-awaited finals berth.

Sharks fans are urged to head out to OKI Jubilee Stadium this Saturday at 1.30pm to support the side who are on the verge of creating history- if they haven't done so already.

Sharks SG Ball Last Chance

Sharks SG Ball Last Chance
22/04/2010 9:37:35 AM

The Hisense Sharks SG Ball side has one last shot at progressing through to the Grand Final qualifier this Saturday 24 April.

The side will travel to St Mary’s Leagues Stadium to play the Sydney Roosters at 10.30am. The tri-colours come off the back of a 32-18 thumping of the Newcastle Knights and are in red hot form.

However, the Sharks were unlucky in the quarter final having only lost by two points against a strong Bulldogs outfit- a penalty goal the difference.
"It will be great to see the young guys come through with a win this weekend," Sharks Football Manager Darren Mooney said.

"The boys had a really strong regular season and are the coaching staff will have them right for a good performance this weekend."

"But it's on again this Saturday and it will be a tough match, so hopefully Sharks fans, friends and family will show up in support of the side."

It will be a do-or-die clash for the junior representative side who are looking to win the club's first ever premiership in their respective division.

Sharks SG Ball Season Over
24/04/2010 12:10:29 PM

The season is over for the Hisense Sharks SG Ball side after they were beaten 28-16 by the Sydney Roosters at St Mary's Leagues Stadium on Saturday.

The Sharks went into the match slight favourites after a strong regular season but were bundled out of the competition after two consecutive losses. The loss of Luke Pickerd to injury during the week didn't help the Sharks cause, with the leading try scorer sorely missed.

The Sharks endured a slow start to the match struggling to complete their sets and it wasn't long after that the Roosters had jumped out to an early 10-0 lead.

However, an impressive individual display brought the score back to 10-4 midway through the second half. Sharks James Hasson scored a brilliant try from 10m out after palming off a couple of defenders to barge his way over the try-line.

However, the Roosters hit straight back and the Sharks went into half-time trailing 16-4.

The Sharks returned to the paddock in the second half looking a completely different team with quick tries to Michael Lichaa and Daniel Moroko leveling the scores at 16-a-piece.

However, a costly error on half way by the Sharks saw the Roosters pick up a loose ball and run 50m under to score under the posts and take the score to 22-16.

The Sharks looked certain to hit back, however Joel Tubbs was unlucky to have dropped the ball over the try-line, which have seen the scores tied up again.

From there, the Sharks just couldn't claw their way back, with the Roosters crossing for their final try soon after to come out 28-16 winners.

Sharks prop Tyrone Viiga was put on report for a spear tackle during the first half and is likely to cop a suspension.

Despite the loss, the Sharks would like to congratulate Dave Howlett and his team on a very successful season, including finishing as Minor Premiers for the first time in the SG Ball.
