Date: 24/08/2008Reds Get A Lesson In Final Home Game

The Bartercard WA Reds were shown a lesson by the stronger and more direct play by Cabramatta Blues going down in a disappointing 30 to 6 loss for their final home game of the season. It was not without effort from the local side, but they just did get enough ball to be able to make a difference in the scoreboard.

The Blues were determined to continue their unbeaten run and improve their position on the ladder and based on the way they played they are a definite chance in the finals.

In the first half the Reds were scoreless and only looked like getting through on two occasions. They were denied over and over by a relentless Cabramatta.

The Blues were able to score regularly and put on 20 points by the half time break.

In the second half their was more endeavour by the Reds, but again they were denied by the Blues and it was not until the 25 minute mark before Taurean Sheehan was able to cross the line for the first try for the night.

From that point on the Blues shut up shop and made sure the Reds were unable to make any more progress on the scoreboard even though they mounted some serious attacks.

Best players for the Reds included Taurean Sheehan and Isaac Thomas.

Cabramatta were well served through good games by Scott Jones, Brett Rimmer and Luke Branighan.

Next week the Reds travel to Sydney for their final game of the season where they line up against third placed Mounties. The team will finish out of the four but will gain the respect of the competition with some good games played over most of the season.

Thunder confirm two new signings

By Scott Wilson

GATESHEAD Thunder have confirmed the capture of two new players for the 2009 season.

The National League One newcomers have signed Australian half-back Luke Branighan and Fijian prop Puna Rasaubale as they finalise their plans for next years campaign.

Branighan is a former half-back partner of Wigan star Trent Barrett, and was once nominated for the Dally M Rookie of the Year award, Australias equivalent of Super Leagues Young Player of the Year.

The 26-year-old made 16 first-grade appearances for Cronulla before spending two years with Lezignan in the French Elite Division, and spent last season representing Sydney City Roosters at reserve level.

"Luke is a top-quality signing and shows exactly what Gateshead are wanting to achieve in 2009," said Thunder head coach Dave Woods. "He has been courted by several NRL clubs in the past, but has been really unfortunate after a couple of knee constructions at pivotal times when he was younger.

"Thankfully, he has had no major injury problems in the past few years, and to still be getting opportunities at NRL clubs now shows hes a real class act. He sees the potential of our club and the opportunity we can give him, and Im sure hell take it with both hands."

Rasaubale narrowly missed out on a place in the Fiji squad for this months Rugby League World Cup, and the 21-year-old is determined to press his international claims by impressing at Gateshead International Stadium.

"I had several offers from UK clubs, but have decided on Gateshead," he said. "They are a club on the rise and I am pleased to be playing National League One next season. Hopefully, I can play NRL or Super League the year after.

"After missing selection into the Fiji squad for the World Cup, my goal now is to get back to the UK and prepare for a big season."

Gateshead Thunder double signing swoop
Oct 9 2008 Evening Chronicle

GATESHEAD Thunder have completed a double signing swoop in the southern hemisphere.

The National League Two champions have landed Aussie half-back Luke Branighan and former Fiji Bati prop Puna Rasaubale.

Branighan started his professional career with St George-Illawarra in 1999, where he partnered former Wigan star Trent Barrett in the half-backs.

After two seasons with St George-Illawarra, where he was nominated for the Dally M” Rookie of the Year award – the equivalent of the Super League’s Young Player of the Year award – Branighan moved to Cronulla for 2001-02.

He turned out 16 times in first-grade appearances for the Dragons and made a lone appearance for the Sharks.

Branighan, 26, spent the 2008 season back in Australia, playing for the Sydney City Rooster Reserve grade after spending two seasons playing in the French Elite Division for Lezignan.

Gateshead coach Dave Woods said: “Luke is a real quality signing and shows exactly what Gateshead Thunder are wanting to achieve in 2009.

“He has been courted by several NRL clubs in the past, but has been unfortunate with two knee constructions at pivotal times when he was younger.

“Thankfully, he has had no major injury problems in the past few years and to still be getting opportunities at NRL clubs now shows he is is a real class act. He sees the potential at our club and the opportunity we can give him, and I am sure he will take it with both hands.”

Branighan said: “I am really looking forward to getting into a full-time role with Thunder.

“I know the ambition of the club and where it sees itself in the future and I want to be part of making that happen.

“I am also looking forward to mixing in with the current squad and the new signings. The set-up at Thunder is all geared towards a good season and an exciting future.”

Branighan has signed an initial one-year deal with a second year option available to both parties.

Meanwhile, Woods described Rasaubale as “a great addition to our squad.”

He added: “We are delighted to have Puna on board.”

After attracting interest from numerous clubs, Gateshead came out front-runners for the young prop’s signature.

Rasaubale said: “My agent Phill Browne had several offers from UK clubs, but we have chosen Gateshead.

“They are a club on the rise and I would like to be playing National League One next season.

“Hopefully I can play NRL or Super League the year after.”

Rasaubale was in Fiji in the last fortnight for the Fiji Bati selection trials to the World Cup.

He added: “After missing selection for the Fiji Bati squad for the Rugby League World Cup, my goal now is to get back to the UK and prepare for a big season.

“I am only 21, so there will be more opportunity in the future to represent Fiji.”

THUNDER BOLT IN FOR BRANIGHAN

National League Two champions Gateshead Thunder have signed former St George Illawarra and Cronulla half-back Luke Branighan for their League One campaign.

Branighan, 26, who began his professional career alongside former Wigan and Australia star Trent Barrett at the Dragons, played for Sydney Roosters' reserves this year after spending the two previous seasons with French club Lezignan.

Gateshead coach Dave Woods said: "Luke is a real quality signing. He has been courted by several NRL clubs in the past but has been really unfortunate after a couple of knee constructions at pivotal times when he was younger.

"Thankfully, he has had no major injury problems in the past few years and he's a real class act."

Branighan, who has signed a one-year deal with a 12-month option, said: "I'm really looking forward to getting into a full-time role with Thunder.

"I know the ambition of the club and where it sees itself in the future and I want to be part of making that happen."

Gateshead have also agreed terms for 2009 with Fijian prop Puna Rasaubale, 21, who missed out on selection for his national team's World Cup squad.

Thunder’s new boys can’t wait for new season to start

Nov 29 2008 Evening Chronicle

GATESHEAD Thunder’s latest signings are all raring to go for the new season – and when the time comes, they will be more than ready to perform.

Halfback Luke Branighan and props Ryan McBride and Puna Rasaubale are currently in their third week of pre-season training and have more than fitted in with their new team-mates.

Branighan, a former St George-Illawarra Dragons and Cronulla Sharks player, spent last year back in Australia.

But he was keen to return back to Europe after spending time playing for Toulouse – a club Thunder will face in the new-look Co-operative Championship in 2009.

“I’ve been a little overawed by both the response of the rest of the squad and the set-up at Gateshead,” said Branighan.

“The boys have accepted me as if I’ve always been here, and there is a fantastic team spirit in the camp.”

“The facilities, the local area and the set-up are all fantastic, and I know we have everything in place to make our first season in the Championship a good one.”

Another signing looking to make a big impact is prop Puna Rasaubale. The Fijian spent last year in London Skolars and faced Thunder twice last season – and knows how well his new club can play.

“When I played against Thunder last year, their style of play and fitness was fantastic and they deservedly won the competition,” he said.

“Now being here, I realise that the club was working and training as a Championship team last year, so I know that the transition into the new league will be a smooth one – and we cannot wait to start.”

Ryan McBride revealed he has an added incentive for wanting do well at Gateshead.

“I’m really proud to be over here to play for a club such as Thunder, ” said the 24-year-old former Souths Logan player.

“I have family that live in the Gateshead area and I feel as if I have fitted in straight away.”

Branighan likes look of Thunder
Dec 2 2008
by Mark Douglas

GATESHEAD Thunder learned yesterday they will kick off life in the new-look Championship One with a tough trip to Whitehaven in February – and their band of new signings can’t wait to get the campaign under way.

The trip to Cumbria on April 15 represents a difficult start to a league season in which Thunder will be competing for potential prize money of £200,000, although there is no promotion to play for or relegation to be feared.

Thunder’s season will start in February with a Northern Rail cup clash against Keighley Cougars. Sheffield Eagles, Championship One title favourites Widnes Vikings and Rochdale Hornets are the other teams in Group One. It represents a tough start to a campaign ahead of which Thunder head coach Dave Woods has signed half-back Luke Branighan, props Ryan McBride and Puna Rasaubale and Andrew Henderson to bolster his squad.

Pre-season training started three weeks ago for Thunder, and their new boys are settling in well in their new surroundings. Branighan, a former St George-Illawarra Dragons and Cronulla Sharks player, spent last year back in Australia but was keen to return back to Europe after spending time playing for Toulouse – a club that Thunder will face in this season’s competition.

Branighan said: “I’ve been a little overawed by both the response of the rest of the squad and the set-up here at Gateshead Thunder. The boys have accepted me as if I’ve always been here, and there is a fantastic team spirit within the camp,” he said.

“The facilities, the local area and the set up are all fantastic at Gateshead, and I know that we have everything in place to make our first season in the Championship a good one.”

Fijian prop Rasaubale spent last year in the capital with London Skolars and faced his current club twice last season – a pair of experiences that have him looking forward to the coming campaign.

“When I played against Thunder last year, their style of play and fitness was fantastic and they deservedly won the competition,” he said.

“Now that I’m here, I can really see all the hard work that the boys had to put in because we are still doing it now – we’re in the doing weights and conditioning everyday, and we also have skills sessions and community work on a daily basis.”

FROM the beaches of Cronulla to the backyard of Cabramatta Leagues Club that is the tale of Cabramatta Two Blues' new recruits for this season's Bundy Red Shield (formerly the Jim Beam Cup).

Andrew Dallanana and Jamie Small are sure to booster the impressive playing roster.

Dallanana played a handful of first-grade games for the Cronulla Sharks in the No.7 jersey in 2003 before moving to play in France.

The 26-year-old spent the last couple of seasons with the Berkeley Eagles and will have huge shoes to fill in replacing former Two Blues halfback Luke Branighan who has joined English Super League club Gateshead.

The Illawarra District A-grade player of the year in 2008 is hoping to lead a big pack of forwards and an explosive backline into semi-final football next year. ``Cabramatta play a pretty expansive game which will suit me quite well,'' he said.

``We have a big forward pack who are also quite mobile which is an exciting prospect.''

One of those forwards is Small who had stints with Balmain and Canterbury before joining Dallanana in France and at Berkeley.

Small said: ``Dallanana is one of the reasons behind my move to Cabramatta.

``He is aggressive, a good organiser and has a good kicking game.

``Another reason is the way the players get treated at this club.

``They have a great coaching staff who look after their players pretty well.''

More Sharks players named in scandal

More Sharks players present during a night of group sex seven years ago have been named as another claim about her involvement in multiple partner intercourse emerge.

Nine News named former Cronulla players Luke Branighan and Daniel Ninness as players who had some form of involvement with the woman, known only as Clare, at the Racecourse Hotel in Christchurch in 2002.

Branighan, who is now playing Super League in the UK, was allegedly in the room when Clare was having sex with former players Matthew Johns and Brett Firman.

When "Clare" gestured for another player to have sex with her after Johns and Firman, Branighan stepped forward.

The woman then reportedly knocked Branighan back and requested Johns to have sex with her again, to which Johns claimed he denied.

Nine News also revealed that former Sharks prop Daniel Ninness was in attendance on the night, but he has denied he participated in the group sex.

"I was present towards the end of the evening," Ninness said in a statement.

"I did not see any of the events said to have occurred and did not participate.”

Ninness confirmed he went back to the woman's home after she invited him to do so but did not have sex with her.

Meanwhile another claim about the past of the woman at the centre of the scandal have been reported.

Seven News reports "Clare" once had sex with two rugby union players in a nightclub toilet.

It's the latest in a series of sordid claims related to the woman.

Tania Boyd worked with the then-19-year-old at the Racecourse Hotel in Christchurch and told Nine News she did not appear at all distressed after the incident.(Read more: Sex scandal woman 'bragged about it')

"She was absolutely excited about the fact: she was bragging about it to the staff and quite willing, openly saying how she had sex with several players," Ms Boyd said.

"We were quite disgusted about it ... there was no trauma whatsoever."

The boss of both women at the time says "Clare" was a "decent, stable type with her head screwed on.

Keith Burgess, the woman's manager at the Racecourse Hotel in Christchurch, where the incident occurred, said he had sympathy for the woman but also for the sportsmen involved.(Read more: Woman in NRL scandal was 'decent')

"It's all a big bloody mess, if you ask me," Burgess said.

Branighan: Black a key for me
Published Date: 05 December 2009
By James Roberts

INCOMING Halifax half back Luke Branighan has identified the presence of former junior rival Ben Black as a key factor in his switch to the Shay.

The Australian playmaker was a sensation for Co operative Championship strugglers Gateshead last season, making him one of the hottest properties on the summer transfer market.

Fax eventually won the race for his signature, a move that will see him reunited with Black, his scrumbase partner for the New South Wales under 17s side, as well as former teammates Shad Royston and Dylan Nash.

"I had a pretty good season this year which meant I ended up with quite a few offers for next season but I am very happy with my decision," said Branighan, who flew into Manchester alongside Black last Monday.

"Me and Ben had a lot of fun playing against each other as teenagers in Sydney and he was always one of the best players in the competition.

"We played NSW under 17s together too and I am confident we will form a pretty good combination.

"I know Dylan obviously from Gateshead, and me and Shad were at Cronulla.

"All that definitely helps to make up your mind, because it is hard to go to a club where you don't know anyone."

Branighan, a former Australian Schoolboys captain and the son of South Sydney Premiership winner Arthur, was pitched straight into Fax's pre season regime within hours of stepping off the plane.

And he pinpointed a successful off season as he looks to take another step towards finally fulfilling the promise that made him once made him one of the hottest properties in the Australian game.

"I was lucky enough to go straight into the NRL out of school, but I have probably had a very unlucky career in terms of injuries and opportunities since then," said the 26 year old.

"I went to St George and then on to Cronulla, but I had a couple of serious injuries there and since then I have been at a few different clubs, playing some good football without getting another chance.

"But I feel I have acquitted myself pretty well in all the competitions I have played in and I am still very confident I can play at the highest level.

"The key for me is to get a really good winter, getting my body in physically the best shape it can be.

"If I can do that, I am confident I can back that up on the field."

Halifax RLFC: Leigh match is massive - Branighan - Halifax Evening Courier

Source: http://news.google.com/news/url?fd=...525.jp&usg=AFQjCNEPgS5moy6h7wXLuy9qOY66sbpapg

Halifax RLFC: Leigh match is massive - Branighan
Published Date: 27 May 2010

HALF-back Luke Branighan believes Halifax need to win at Leigh on Sunday to prove they have what it takes to be Co-operative Championship title challengers this season.

The affable Aussie was one of Halifax's better players on an off-day for the side at Keighley on Sunday, where the visitors were flattered by a 46-32 victory over Barry Eaton's strugglers.

Branighan knows a repeat performance is most unlikely to be good enough against Ian Millward's second-placed side this weekend but he also knows Fax are capable of much better, as they showed in the 46-24 home win against champions Barrow the previous weekend.

"Next week is a massive game for both sides," said the 28-year-old from Sydney.

"For us to show we can be challengers to Leigh and Featherstone we need a win."

Reflecting on Sunday's performance the stand-off said: "It was a funny old game - very up and down, very scrappy.

"We all suffered from the heat and the pitch was as hard as a road, the M62.

"The only positive was that we got a win but we leaked way too many points. We've got to play for 80 minutes and we were threequarters of the way there against Barrow.

"This was a disappointing performance in comparison and we need more consistency if we want to challenge the top sides."

Branighan, who previously played with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and St George Illawarra Dragons in Australia's NRL, joined Matt Calland's side from Gateshead.

He isn't regretting the move and particularly likes the way the fans, who were well represented in Sunday's 1,600 crowd, get behind the team.
"Halifax is a rugby league-mad town and the supporters travel too," he said. "It's great to play for such a famous club."

THE supporters' trust coach for Leigh leaves the Shay at 12.45 on Sunday. Seats are £10 for adults and £5 for juniors. To book ring Neil Arber on 07714 488080.
