RUGBY LEAGUE: The legends of league are returning to Mackay.

Queensland will take on NSW in an International Legends of League match at the JRL grounds on Saturday, November 20, organiser Troy Byers said yesterday.

The likes of Robbie O'Davis, Mick Hancock, Slamin' Sam Backo, Paul Bowman and Chris Beattie will take the field for Queensland.

“Chris has only just returned from a stint overseas and he's keen to go,” Byers said.

Beattie, 35, made his NRL debut in 2000, playing for the Cronulla Sharks, as a 24-year-old.

A regular in the Sharks side, he went on to represent Queensland in State of Origin, playing two games in 2001 and one in 2002.

David Peachey, Paul Sironen, John Hoppoate, Brett Kenny and Rob Silva will be among Blues lining up for NSW, in what Byers tips to be a close and entertaining match.

“All of these players were first-class in their prime, and although they might have lost a few yards of pace they still have the footy brains,” he said.

“This shapes as a match not to be missed.”

Last year a similar match raised just under $60,000 for charity including Rotary and junior and senior rugby league clubs in Mackay.

“After the good result from last year we've decided to put the game on again, and the money raised from it will go to local charities.”

Another popular part of the Legends visit to Mackay last year was the golf day, which will be held again at Mackay Golf Club on Friday, November 19.

“It's a good chance for corporate bodies to give their people a chance to get out and mingle with some of the legendary names of rugby league,” Byers said.

“If anyone is interested in being involved they can give me a call.”

Byers can be contacted on 0425769488.
