Reds’ recruitment drive has finished
October 12, 2006

SALFORD City Reds are no longer looking to recruit players for next season.

They are happy with their 2007 squad having signed Leigh centre Danny Halliwell and young Wigan forward Lee Jewitt at the end of last week.

Steve Simms, Salford's director of football, said: "We are happy with what we've got and are no longer looking around.

"But, under the 25/20 rule, we do have space for one more player earning more than £25,000 per year. We will keep that space just in case something crops up."

Simms added: "Often, a few decent players become available in January or February and if we are one of those clubs that has left space on the salary cap then we stand a good chance of getting them."

Halliwell, aged 25, scored 26 tries for Leigh in 2006 and was named in the National League One dream team. He has previous Super League experience with Halifax, Wakefield and Warrington.

Simms said: "We needed an outside back and Danny can play centre or full back. He's a big lad with lots of pace and a lot of ability and he is determined to make the most of the opportunity to play at Super League level again.

"He has matured since he last played in Super League. Danny has proved himself to be a prolific try scorer in League One. He can score tries from all over the place and he will provide good competition to the likes of Moule and McGuinness."

Jewitt, aged 19, has come through Wigan's Academy ranks.

He comes highly recommended by former Wigan coach Ian Millward.

And another ex-Wigan coach, Stuart Raper, invited Jewitt to play for his NRL side Cronulla Sharks last season.

Simms said: "The fact that he was invited to play in Australia shows what a good prospect Lee is.

"He broke his hand in Australia and had to come back to Wigan under-21s. Wigan wanted to keep him but he has decided to join us and we are delighted.

"He's a good tough front rower and he's definitely one for the future."

Both players have penned one-year deals with the Reds.

'I want to be next Morley'

Dave Lawrenson
December 27, 2006

NEW Salford City Reds recruit Lee Jewitt moulds his game on Adrian Morley – and he hopes to become just as good a player. NEW Salford City Reds recruit Lee Jewitt moulds his game on Adrian Morley – and he hopes to become just as good a player.

LEE Jewitt is determined to establish himself as the new Adrian Morley - and he is convinced that the Salford City Reds will give him the platform to do so.

The 19-year-old prop from Oldham says that Salford's track record with the likes of Luke Robinson and Luke Adamson shows that the Reds are willing to give young guns the chance to establish themselves at Super League level. So when Salford offered him a one-year contract for next season he did not hesitate to put pen to paper despite having offers to stay at Wigan or move to Aussie outfit Cronulla Sharks.

Jewitt said: "Salford do give youngsters a chance and that's why I've joined them.

"I want a shot at Super League level and make a name for myself. I want to be known as the next big thing coming through."

Jewitt is certainly big in a physical sense - for his age at least! He is 6ft 1in tall and weighs 15-and-a-half stone. And he is currently in the process of making himself even bigger.

He said: "I love the physical side of the game. I am very much in the Adrian Morley mould in terms of getting stuck in and using my strength and power to take no prisoners. He is the player that I aspire too. I want to be the next Adrian Morley.

"But I need to bulk up more and that's what I will be working on between now and the start of next season."

Morley snubbed his hometown club Salford to sign for Warrington at the end of the 2006 season. But the Reds are happy with their forward options for 2007 having snapped up Mark Edmondson from Sydney Roosters, Michael Korkidas from Wakefield and Stephen Nash from Widnes.

And with new Great Britain ace Andy Coley, Gareth Haggerty and Paul Highton already at the club, Jewitt knows that he faces tough competition for a first team shirt. But that is a challenge he will relish.

Jewitt, who joined Wigan at the age of 14 and made two Super League appearances for them in 2006, said: "I will thrive on the competition at Salford. It will push me to play to the best of my ability.

"There are some great forwards at Salford but if I didn't think I was good enough to get into the team then I wouldn't have joined. I have signed for just one-year but once I've shown what I can do I'm hoping the club will offer me an extended deal.

"Salford are a club with a bright future and I'd like to be part of that.

"They made the play-offs this season and with the new signings they have made I'm sure that they will be in the play-offs again next year.

"They may even challenge for trophies."

Jewitt is one of the few English youngsters to have experience of playing in Australia.

Former Wigan coaches Stuart Raper and Adrian Lam invited Jewitt to test himself at Cronulla in February but his NRL dreams were cut short by a broken hand.

Jewitt was forced to return to Wigan, who were coached by Ian Millward at the time.

Millward rates Jewitt highly and it was his recommendation that convinced the Reds to make a move.

Jewitt said: "It's very flattering to hear that Ian Millward put in a good word for me. He is a legend of the game.

"I couldn't turn down the chance to go to Australia and if it wasn't for my broken hand I could have made it there. All I would have needed was a bit more training.

"But I want to make it in Super League and I'm really looking forward to playing for Salford.

"They have a great coach in Karl Harrison. From what I've seen and heard about him he is a belting bloke. It will be great working with him."

Jewitt's gamble pays off

Jewitt’s gamble pays off
Chris Brierley
July 15, 2010

Lee Jewitt reckons the young guns at Salford can fire them to Super League respectability over the next few seasons.

That’s why he’s just signed a new three-year contract with the City Reds.

The 23-year-old prop from Oldham has joined Daniel Holdsworth, Adam Sidlow, Ashley Gibson and Matty Smith in signing a new deal at the Willows with Jodie Broughton and Ryan Boyle expected to follow suit.

"We have got a young team compared to other Super League sides but if you breed these young lads – including myself – we are going to be a force to be reckoned with," said Jewitt.

"We are getting the experience and in the next couple of years we’ll come into our own and start playing how we know we can play.

"They wanted to extend my contract last year for a year but I wanted to leave it a bit longer. I took the gamble of hopefully playing well this year and getting a bigger and better contract, to be honest.

"I took that gamble and it paid off for me.

"I’m over the moon. I love it here, I get on with the lads and I want to be a part of the new stadium. It’s great for my wife Rebecca and our two youngsters as well."

Jewitt has already spent four seasons with Salford after signing from Wigan where he made his debut at 17. He also had a brief spell in Australia with Cronulla Sharks.

"Adrian Lam took me over there but unfortunately I broke my wrist," said Jewitt. "A lot went on behind the scenes but I had to come back to England and get an operation.

"It was one of the best experiences of my life. A young lad of 17 getting asked to go and play in Australia – opportunities like that don’t come around every day.

"It was absolutely brilliant. It would be a lifetime achievement if I could go back there again at the back end of my career."

Jewitt spent another six months at Wigan before deciding he needed a change and joined Salford.

He’s had a tough time with injury at the Willows including a broken leg and is currently on the sidelines with a knee injury.

He said: "It was getting better and I had an injection but the back of my knee is really painful so I’m going to see a specialist.

"I might need a minor operation to have a look inside and see what’s going on but I’m hoping for good news.

"I was just getting back into playing and enjoying myself and it was a massive setback for me. You just want to get out there and help the lads."

Jewitt is still smarting from last Friday’s 60-10 hammering at Wigan where he watched, painfully, from the sidelines.

"If things aren’t happening for you against a team like Wigan you are going to be on the back end of a good hiding and unfortunately we were," said Jewitt.

"We’ve got a few things to work on both individually and as a team, but we are building.

"We need to keep improving and hopefully next year we can take Salford to new heights.

"A lot of people are working so hard behind the scenes. The players give it everything in training. We don’t stop working hard because we’ve been beaten – it makes us want to work harder."

SALFORD Reds coach Shaun McRae has labelled Wigan Warriors ‘the best team in Super League’.

McRae heaped glowing praise on Michael McGuire’s table-toppers after they inflicted a comprehensive 10-try win over the City Reds.

McRae says Wigan are worthy Super League leaders, admitting: "Wigan are strong, quick, they’ve got quality and they’re playing well as a team.

"We couldn’t be faulted for spirit against them but they are on top of their game right now. This week’s top-of-the-table clash with Warrington should be some contest – you have to fancy Wigan at home."
