Mogg's fairytale debut inspires Kingston to dream

MELBOURNE'S Cameron Smith may appear to have a stranglehold on the Queensland hooking spot, but Cronulla's Kevin Kingston still dreams of playing State of Origin one day, and Adam Mogg's elevation to a Maroons hero has only reinforced Kingston's belief that it could happen.

It wouldn't surprise Sharks coach Stuart Raper if Kingston made it to Origin either, since Raper says Kingston is a similar style of player to NSW and Australian hooker Danny Buderus.

"Kevin is similar in size and shape to Danny and he's also very tough, he works hard to make an impact and he can play a lot of minutes, like Danny," Raper said. "I'm not comparing Kevin to Danny and saying he's the next Buderus or anything like that - that would be unfair on Kevin - but it's a terrific style to play.

"I really like his work ethic and his enthusiasm and you know you've got a good player when the other guys love to play with him. Kevin's that sort of player, like Thommo [Lance Thompson] and Bails [Phil Bailey]."

Kingston, 23, is thriving now as part of the in-form Cronulla side preparing for a big game against fellow top-eight side Manly at Toyota Park tonight, but at the start of last year his career was at a crossroads.

He had been cut by Cronulla at the end of the previous season and had signed to play Premier League for Newtown but, to his advantage, the Jets became Cronulla's feeder club, so Raper and the rest of the Sharks coaching staff regularly kept seeing Kingston play.

And they liked what they saw as he worked hard on his game, to the extent that he was brought back into Cronulla's first-grade squad midway through the season, made his first-grade debut shortly after, and finished the year with eight games.

Kingston hasn't missed a game this season and says he and the rest of the Sharks have developed a tremendous self-belief from their recent run of six wins from seven games, which followed an awful start to the season when they lost four of their first five.

"If we hit a rough patch in a game now, we have the confidence to get through it because of the form we've been in for a while now," Kingston said yesterday. "It was a big wake-up call for us at the start of the year, but we recovered from that and we're all doing our jobs. My goals are to try to play 80 minutes, to plug the middle of the field defensively, to get a lot of talk going and to make good decisions about when to let the ball go and when to scoot around the rucks."

The official NRL media guide tells us Kingston was born in Sydney. Big mistake. He was born in the far north Queensland town of Babinda and grew up on the Gold Coast. And he watched Queensland's win in Origin II on Wednesday night with an obvious passion.

"It was great to see," Kingston said. "The thing Origin does is make champions out of people, sometimes people you weren't expecting, like Adam Mogg. He did a fantastic job. It can happen to anyone, if you've got the right attitude. I'd love it to happen to me one day. It's one of my dreams, for sure."

■ Ian Millward will be Graham Murray's deputy at North Queensland from 2007 after signing a two-year deal with the Cowboys.

The Australian returns from a successful stint in the English Super League to replace Cowboys assistant Neil Henry, who takes over the reins as Canberra's head coach next season.

crap. he is holding de gois back.

jigsaw we come to ahead agian.I think we need kingston to settle the play down or establish it.As you saw in tonights game against the broncos .He played solid in defence and attack till the game sorted it self out then ricky brought on de gois to keep the momentum in attack and defence going. He was killing it so he left him on for the majority of the game. All teams have two semi hookers for that reason .I'm still with you in that de gois is the better player with even more potential to come.

Kinga topped the tackle count until he came off. Degois is good but i think they compliment each other very well, neither one would be as effective without the other.

Agree moleman, you need the 2 in our team I think, it gives a settleing and stable effect.

I'm glad we re-signed him he's a good young player. I think he has great potential, so does Joey Johns aswell he said Kevin reminds him abit of Danny Buderus.

only probem with kingston is when he kicks it isn't a great kick, he should try giving it to kearney if our halves are unable to kick for some reason
