Colin Best was a terrible defender when he first started playing for the Sharks, like a giraffe on roller skates wearing blinkers.

Ended his career as a very good defender.

All this talk about Iro can cover this position and that position…..

Has me thinking he’s a utility player going forward if he can improve his tackling ability.

Talakai rips teams a new one at centre and combines with his winger really well with quick hands and can make space for his winger. AT FIRST GRADE LEVEL.

As for Sam Stonestreet the sooner the club lock him in for 2 to 3 years the better.
The guy is a gun. Speed, skills and great height for a winger.
If you’ve never seen him run just You Tube him.
He makes opposition players look like they’re running in sand behind him.

SS for sure. Does all of the winger things well. Yardage, fielding kicks, positioning, finishing, etc.

Iro would need to learn to tackle and defend, but that’s doable. Lots of outside backs have gone on to figure it out and play rep footy later. Tahu early on looked like he was trying to play a different sport when the other team had the ball, and ended up a noted defender.
Won't we just throw Iro in as a bench lock for half a season? That's how we do it at the Sharks :)

could be an option through the season to play as our utility off the bench.

What? How is he a utility? Maybe in a Gerard Beale way.
In the way where you put him on the bench because it is hard to predict where you might need injury cover in a game and he is a bloke you just can't leave out of the 17.
And you want the forum to distract themselves into sooking about "whats the point of a centre on the bench" and "why name him if you will only give him 10 minutes out of position" rather than anything else

So exactly like Beale then.

Iro has played In the back row also hence why he would be a good utility. Can play 11/12, 3/4, 5/2 and 1.

If he's not going to get many minutes I'd rather him playing 80 in cup working on his defence.
I don't think anyone is suggesting he will be a second rower in first grade. Just that he can cover the position so will make a good utility and that can provide a path to the NRL. I think picking him on the bench if we have a couple injuries makes sense. Otherwise sure leave him in cup.

Yeah, but how many can he do well? I would say left centre, and wing.

I don't think he played much second row in Cup. I think he was named there a couple of times because other guys were out, but on gameday they ended up bringing in someone from Glebe.

Guys getting shuffled around in Cup is pretty common. It's a feeder league, and sometimes guys pull out on short notice. It doesn't mean he has a future there - just that he was the best option to throw in on the day.

Think he played second row in the under 10s in the Cook Islands, very good standard I believe.

There are some big poly boys in the under 10's. No wonder Iro doesn't like tackling.

Everyone is a product of their environment... I used to have a mate who grew up in Tinga. He said the only place to play footy was a paddock between his house and the Blacklocks, and it was rock hard and covered in cow pats; nobody liked having to hit the ground, so Nathan never wanted to tackle :ROFLMAO:

I definitely didn't think they were. I was simply saying that Iro has elements to work on that he wouldn't be able to as a utility. There are also better options for utility already within our squad, so I don't think that's the best pathway for him.

There is no doubt that their are other players with better utility value. Graham, McInnes, Tracey, Trindall, Dykes. But in saying this as we have seen with Dykes, injuries happen.

I do think part of Iro's development plan with be time in first grade and it will be his goal and the clubs goal for maybe 5-6 games thins year. This could happen in a variety of ways depending on what happens regarding injuries, suspensions and rep duties throughout the year. He may also spend some weeks as 18th man and get a game that way.
