CRONULLA has emerged as the frontrunner to sign Josh Hannay only days after the North Queensland centre played a key role in the Maroons' State of Origin victory in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Hannay is yet to receive an offer from North Queensland, and Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr will meet coach Graham Murray over the weekend to discuss whether the goalkicking centre remains part of their plans. They may have left their run too late, with Hannay and his manager Jim Banaghan scheduled to fly to Sydney today to hold talks with the Sharks. Banaghan made it clear Cronulla, which has also spoken to Parramatta centre Brett Delaney, was the favourite to sign Hannay.

The Sharks are desperate to recruit a quality centre after New Zealand international Nigel Vagana and youngster Beau Scott announced they would leave the club at the end of the year to join South Sydney and St George Illawarra, respectively.

"We see a much more natural link with the Sharks as to how he plays," Banaghan said.

"They're the leaders at this moment. We're going to sit down with Stu Raper to see if it's going to be a natural marriage. If things work out correctly by Monday he will be a Shark."

Bulldogs forward Nate Myles and Hannay, along with Newcastle second-rower Steve Simpson, are the highest quality players remaining on the open market.
Hannay is the only representative centre yet to be snapped up. He has attracted interest from Gold Coast, which has signed 17 players for its inaugural season.

Hannay's solid performance in Origin III, after almost missing the game with a viral infection, only enhanced his value.

"He is no doubt the leading outside back on the market," Banaghan said. "He doesn't have to rush into anything."

Hannay's Queensland team-mate Myles has time on his side as well, although he told The Australian on Thursday that he was keen to make a decision on 2007 as soon as possible.

The Maroons forward has been advised by team-mates to re-sign with the Bulldogs but that looks unlikely, with the Belmore club using up most of its money under the salary cap.

Melbourne is the clear favourite despite the interest of a number of other clubs.

The Storm will hold talks with Myles and his manager early next week, as will the Sydney Roosters.

Gold Coast will announce the signing of another of Hannay's Cowboys team-mates, Gavin Cooper, within days.

The Titans have 17 players under lock and key for their inaugural season next year and Cooper shapes as a key recruit with his ability to play centre and back row.

Simpson's manager George Mimis will meet Newcastle today to discuss his client's future.

The NSW second-rower became a free agent when he played in Wednesday night's Origin decider in Melbourne - his sixth interstate game in the past two years.

That activated a clause in his contract which allowed him to negotiate a new deal.

"He's had lots of expressions of interest, probably half a dozen (clubs)," Mimis said.

"His key goal is to try to do a new deal with the Knights."

i think hanay will be worth it, he is a clean cut sort of a guy that will fit in well at shark park, and he can take the kick from in front and luke can take the ones from the side line. cause luke misses the easy ones, lol and gets all the hard ones

Hannay to field offers

11-Jul-2006

UNFASHIONABLE Cowboy Josh Hannay has become one of rugby league's hottest properties less than three weeks after being on the NRL scrapheap.

The off-contract centre is being chased by four NRL clubs despite playing more Queensland Cup matches this season for the Young Guns (nine) than he has for the Cowboys (six).

Cronulla, Penrith, Newcastle and Parramatta have expressed interest in signing Hannay, whose options appeared slim before his shock elevation into the Queensland squad for last Wednesday's Origin series decider in Melbourne.

The 26-year-old, who made his debut for North Queensland in 1998, had even been considering a stint in England after the Cowboys stalled in offering him a new deal.

Hannay edged a step closer to leaving the Cowboys yesterday when Cronulla confirmed it would offer the Moranbah junior a contract for next season.
Hannay attended the Sharks' clash with Wests Tigers at Toyota Park on Sunday and later met officials to discuss joining the club.

Sharks chief executive Greg Pierce last night was set to table a formal offer to Hannay and his manager Jim Banaghan.

Pierce said yesterday the Sharks were keen to lure Hannay, with centres Nigel Vagana (South Sydney), Phil Bailey (Wigan) and Beau Scott (St George Illawarra) departing the club. The only sticking point was how much the Sharks could afford to pay Hannay, especially as he had just broken back into the representative arena.

"We will certainly be making him an offer," he said. "We have some salary cap restraints that we are working through. We can only pay what we can pay.

"The fact Josh played for Queensland doesn't change our circumstances, but it probably changes his in terms of what he perceives his value to be.

"Unfortunately we don't get allowances for representative players."

Pierce said the Sharks expected a quick response because they were also trying to sign several other players.

He said the offer to Hannay would remain only as long as the club did not reach its salary cap limit.

"Josh seemed happy with the area. He has never lived in Sydney before but he said the fact (Cronulla) was removed from the heart of the city appealed to him," Pierce said.

"He has been a good player for a long time and we see him as someone who can bring a lot of experience to the club, which we will need."

Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said the club had not completely shut the door on Hannay but a final decision on whether a new deal would be offered would be made today.

"He's obviously attracting a bit of interest, so tomorrow will be D-day for us," he said.

Josh Hannay given a couple of days to decide future with sharks

it has been reported that josh has been given till thursday or wednesday to decide where he will participate in the 2007 season...cronulla appear to be front runners however, newcastle, parra and penrith also want his talent for next season.

if we do get hannay will it be a bad thing or a good thing?

i believe it will be good, we are lacking raw talent in the centres. Also i have to say he is a lil overrated after playing one origin game which he didnt really deserve the chance to compete in and hardly was noticed on the field, on the other hand he will provide experience and with the coaching staffs confidence if he does come to the club hopefully he will come good and perform like he has for the last few years.

your views.....

I think he is a decent signinig, he hasn't had a great year this year but the 2 previous years he went pretty good. Also the other good thing is he is a goal kicker, so we will have 2 good goal kickers which is always handy to have, especially if your 1st goal kicker is out.

yeh i agree i think he will be a great signing.he seems to me like hes a player who will give 100% each week and wil actaully be keen to play.i will say this now, if hannay signs im positive he will do more for the sharks on the field then nigel vagana has in his 3 years here.he may not hbe fast but hes a very smart player and great defensivly.also his goal kicking wil be great backup for cov.

Lets not forget that at the start of the season when the Cowboys were firing he wasn't in NRL side he was playijng feeder club footy, That says something to me. I am not saying he is useless but he is askig for in excess of 220k, I doubt he is worth that much, yes he would possibly do more then Vagana, but one thing about Vagana although he hasn't done much offensively, his defense has been great, if you look at most games period, there are fewer tries scored on his side of the field as opposed to Baileys/Mcgoldrick/Mellors side. I am not sure Defensively Hannay is as good as Vagana defensively.

BUT Vagana is going and that is that and Hannay a possibility.

We need something or someone?

The only thing im worried about with hannay is his injuries, he is injury prone. I dont want the sharks paying a player that spends half his time on the side line.

Hannay to leave Cowboys at season's end
Posted Jul 12, 2006 7:39pm AEST

The North Queensland Cowboys have told centre Josh Hannay he is no longer wanted by the club beyond the current NRL season.

The off-contract Hannay, who made his first grade debut for the Cowboys in 1998, has not been offered a new deal for 2007.

Cronulla is believed to have made Hannay an offer, which is still to be considered by the 26-year-old.

Cowboys chief executive officer Peter Parr said the club's coaching staff had made the decision to release Hannay.

"The coaching staff felt we shouldn't be in a position to offer Josh a contract beyond this year and unfortunately in professional sport that's what happens," he said. "It's not a fairytale."

Mr Parr said Hannay had given the Cowboys outstanding service.

"Josh Hannay's played 150-odd games for this club and that's not something we'll ever forget and that's not something we didn't take into account when the decision was made," he said.

"But having taken all that into account we thought that we'd move in another direction at this time."

Hannay has only played a handful of first grade matches for the Cowboys this season, yet earned Queensland selection for last week's third and deciding State of Origin match in Melbourne.

hannay is a good player, however the facts are that he will most likely be overpaid...this can limit our other options but there are no more centres left

Hannay is a cowboy's junior.
Sharks are also talking to Broncos winger/centre Fraser Anderson, the brother of NZ internationals Vinnie and Louis Anderson. Anderson joined the Broncos this season after spending the past two years in the Philippines, serving as a missionary!!!
I think I agree with Fancyman -- Im starting to dislike the Titans too. Such arrogance for a team that's yet to play a game.

And what the hell is going on with James Stosic -- talk now that he's about to join the Titans? Does he want to play for the Sharkies or not?

I have heard that the sharks are about to sign Fraser Anderson from Broncos, who is a winger and can also play centre and Adam McDougall has a bit of interest in Cronulla, but anyway Hannay will be good as he can kick and has had good experience.

Well now it's official: Stosic has signed with Titans.
Seems to me Cronulla has been worst affected by the arrival of the Titans: indirectly that is, because every player we wanted they got. You can't tell me there are enough quality players around to warrant 16 teams.

Stosic leaving is a huge blow to the sharks. the guy runs the ball up hard for us every week. he is only young to. he would have gotten so much better. i think it was a mistake by the sharks to let him go.

Titans are a pain in the ass!!! webster and delaney and now stosic... i'd love to see there salary cap
