The shock of Cronulla's victory over the front-running Bulldogs was obviously too much for five-eighth John O'Connor back in 1984, as shown in the story.

Cronulla's prop Michael Porter had predicted before the game that O'Connor was due for a big one: "Watch out for John O'Connor - he's a good player and will handle Terry Lamb."

And he was certainly proved right - the RLW match report said: "O'Connor played one of the most dominating roles seen by a young player this season. The 19-year-old had a hand in two of Cronulla's five tries, and was superb.

"He also managed to do what very few players had done this season - contain Lamb. O'Connor had several confrontations with Lamb and showed he is as cheeky as they come.

"O'Connor was all over Lamb whenever the NSW pivot got the ball, forcing him into errors."

Fullback Jonathan Docking and Tony Armstrong each scored two tries, while Cronulla's back row of Greg Nixon, Howard Jansen and Garry Walker led the way up front.
