Don't think I have seen a thread for this guy yet.

Was this his last year in the NYC?

He's born in 1996, so I expect that means he isn't eligible next season. I think he'll be part of the top 25 next season and will split time between first grade and reggies. For a guy who won the "Player of Year for NYC" he is remarkably under-hyped.

From the little I have seen of him he looks like the real deal. I hope he is top 17 next year if we don't get anyone else.

I am starting to think that we should give him his shot, maybe with Nu also in the 17.

Might have been different if we did not win the GF.

There's a little piece on him in the Tele today about him declaring that he's ready to take over from Micky.

Him and Nu could be a decent combo. Only issue is D and if either can handle it.

Andrew Fifita has no intention of walking out on the NRL any time soon as he plots Cronulla’s continued success with fellow prop Matt Prior. Their first task is working out how to soften the blow of the loss of the retiring Michael Ennis.

His snubbing by the Australian selectors, at the behest of the NRL and ARL Commission, led to speculation he could leave the NRL.

Fifita and Prior received a standing ovation at the Sharks’ presentation night on Thursday as they were announced as the first joint winners of the Monty Porter medal for best player. Porter was the Sharks captain in their 1967 foundation year.

“It’s another first for the Sharks,” Prior said, referring to the maiden NRL premiership barely a week old that Cronulla wrested from Melbourne 14-12 last Sunday. “And to be with *Andrew makes me super proud.”

Fifita said he already had set his mind to how he and Prior would be working in the pre-*season to bring through a No 9 to replace Ennis.

“We will miss Mick massively, but we’ve got some exciting *talent coming through with the hookers, especially Jayden *Brailey,” Fifita said of the Dally M Holden Cup player of the year.

For Fifita, having the Monty Porter medal placed around his neck by coach Shane Flanagan capped a week of highs and lows. He scored the winning try in the grand final but was outvoted for the Clive Churchill medal, which went to teammate Luke Lewis.

Two days later, Fifita learned he was being banned from the Kangaroos, along with Semi Rad*radra, due to behaviour seen as unbecoming of the jersey. Fifita has supported one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge, which earned the ire of the NRL integrity unit and NSW Police.

While the 27-year-old would not comment about the Kangaroos’ stance, he was willing to talk about his bond with Prior and how the unlikely duo were looking forward to ensuring the Sharks did not slacken off in 2017.

“A bonus is going to be that we’re going to gel well again in the off-season and pre-season,” Fifita said.

“We’ve always said players like Jayden had an exciting *future, so it will be up to me and Priz (Prior) to take him under our wing and help him out around the middle.

“He plays 80 minutes in the under-20s so I think he will be able to handle it. He’s not all that big but neither is Mick Ennis.

“And now Mick is staying (as coaching assistant) with the club to help us out. The squad already has experience and we’ve played grand final footy so the future is in our hands.”

HE is the Cronulla junior who says he is ready to replace premiership hero Michael Ennis next year.

While the Shire may still be celebrating the club’s historic grand final win, the question of who takes over from the retiring Ennis loom as the Sharks’ biggest obstacle ahead of their premiership defence.

But 20-year-old Jayden Brailey says he is the answer.

“I feel like I’m ready,” Brailey said. “I feel like if I do train hard I could handle it. I’m really looking forward to the pre-season and hopefully Flanno (coach Shane Flanagan) gives me my chance.

“He spoke to me a couple of weeks ago and said he was stoked with how I played this year and said with Mick leaving there are other hookers there. I understand that and he gave me a few things I need to work on.

“The ball is in my court. I need to show him what I can do in the pre-season. I have confidence in my ability that I can handle playing in the top grade next year.”

Brailey, who captained Cronulla’s under-20s this year, will join the fulltime squad again next year having spent last off-season training with the NRL team. The Australia Schoolboys representative capped a stellar season by winning the under-20s player of the year at the Dally M Awards. He also took out the club’s player of the year on Thursday night.

The Sharks have lost Ennis and back-up hooker Matt McIlwrick with Brailey fighting it out with Nu Brown and ex-Tiger Manaia Cherrington.

“I feel like if I have a good pre-season I’m a good chance of playing,” Brailey said.

“It’s pretty exciting. Mick leaves a massive hole. I’m looking forward to ripping into the pre-season. It helps (having gone through one already) with how to prepare myself mentally for what’s to come.

“The timing of when I should start training so I’m not too far behind starting.”

Ennis is expected to maintain a role with the club, guiding the likes of Brailey.

“I want him to stick around,” Brailey said. “I worked with him in the last pre-season. He stayed behind with me and did extras and taught me a few things. Even just watching him at training you take a lot out of it. He trains 100 per cent every session and is just a competitor.”

Brailey, who is off-contract at the end of next season, trained with the first grade squad as part of their grand final preparations. He watched from the stands at ANZ Stadium, daring to dream of his own premiership glory.

“It gave me goose bumps,” the Aquinas Colts junior said. “Growing up I’ve never really seen the Sharks make the grand final.

“Being off-contract this is a big year if I want to have this as my livelihood. I have to have a big year and hopefully I’m still at the Sharks. I’ve got to play well and get another contract. That’s an extra motivation for me.

Younger brother Blayke, also a hooker and Australian Schoolboys representative, is expected to take Brailey’s under-20s spot while dad Glenn coaches Cronulla’s under-16 Harold Matthews team.

It's actually a good thing we have 3 young hookers. The fact they know they are all after the same position will ensure there is heaps of competition during the off season and may come down to who performs better in the trials

Hopefully brailey can put on a bit of size to handle the defence in the middle. Get him working out with leutele.

I'd be happy to throw them both in the deep end. Brailey could take over full time when Maloney retires and Nu can go to 5/8 (assuming chad keeps progressing and can handle being main playmaker)

The monkey is off or back now too so we don't have to buy each year for instant success. I'd be happy to give some experience to the younger fellas and have a future spine of 1-Holmes, 6-Nu, 7-Chad & 9-Brailey

Had 31 try assists and 32 line break assists for the year which was first in both categories
I really couldn't think of a better young hooker to fill Ennis's shoes. Very exciting young prospect.

A rotation of him and Nu brown would be a great to his career. If the rumor of Beale wanting out is true, we could easily Cater to a bench with Nu brown or Capewell on it. You would think they would get plenty of game time next year.

Since we won the comp and don't need to sign any quick fix players I'd like to see flanno give brailey the full year in first grade and let him soak up as much as he can from gal, lewis, hino etc before they retire. Learn what first grade at a premiership winning team is all about and not wait till we're in a transition period before he gets a run.
