he wont get close to BB's spot when BB is fit, he isnt that good, but he is good enough to push him
it's more wishful thinking on my end - not a fan of how BB has controlled the team in the past.

Fitz and Price should be good enough to improve

no doubt, bb is first on my **** list this year, but big call to think a 26 year old on his first fulltime contract will take his spot

he will definitely push him to the brink though

Have you seen much of Berrell to suggest he is better or can control the team more ? I haven't seen him play aside from the highlights packages but the pessimist in me wonders if a 26 yr old is that good why hasn't he been snapped up before now ?

He sounds like he's going to provide good depth and also might mean we're not forced to move McInnes to hooker if Brailey gets injured potentially.

I do think with McInnes and Berrell that Brailey's spot isn't as much of a given as it was the last 2 years. Needs a big off season and a good start to the year.

I think his spot is a given, but that him playing less than 80 is now a much more viable option with both those players in the squad. Watching Connor Tracey play hooker makes me cringe and twitch.

Here’s my full take on Berrell…

Before this season I wasn’t a fan.

Up until this season Mitch Cronin (R.I.P.) was the starting 9 and the captain, so Berrell would usually come off the bench and play a bit of 6, 7 or 9. Cronin was a guy who could play almost anywhere, so if a back got injured Wynnum would move him out wider and Berrell would come in to 9.

He’s always fit the mould of a bench 9 for me. Good running game, can make an impact, but he has some mistakes in him and can be prone to the occasional bonehead play. His passing from dummy half isn’t as good as some, and defence in the middle can be question mark too. He’s tough and willing, but he does fall off a few.

He had a good year this year (obviously). I wouldn’t have said he is the best player in the comp, but he obviously had enough good games to get the chocolates, and it’s not like he didn’t have other guys in his team getting points (the Wynnum 6 and 7 both polled high).

On the plus side, the guy is ultra competitive. He seems like the sort of guy you’d love to play with and hate to play against. His ball-playing at the line is really smart, and he is a “take a hit to make a play” type of player - which is something plenty on here will love because that’s the opposite of how Brailey is perceived.

I personally don’t think he’ll push Brailey at all, but it is great to have another good 9 option in the squad for if/when it is needed. I’d take him at 9 over Tracey any day. That he can play in the halves makes him a decent bench option too, since with Hynes in the squad you can pretty much cover any injury.

All in all I’m really happy for him, as I wouldn’t be for anyone who slugs it out in lower grades for years and then finally gets an opportunity. I hope he tears it up for the Jets and forces his way into the 17 so you can all call bullshit on any of the negative stuff I’ve said above.

Up up

Fitz'll fix him.

I can't.

Since the migration my "Super Moderator" status is name only. I don't actually have any mod permissions at the moment. I'll hit up SF about it soon.

I think Brailey is more likely to get a rest from McInnes than Berrell but you never know. Sounds like Berrell can play a few positions.

And if Metcalf is leaving and Moylan is out injured then Berrell could take the 14 spot.

I've seen a little - I've always liked the 9's that are a little aggressive and feisty, Play style a little more direct.. being right in the middle the more competitive they are the better. Ennis, Smith, Grant, Hodgson, Mahoney I think would suit the Sharks abit more is where I'm coming from.

Brailey is mad I 100% believe he needs more time but I also feel like he's a little too laidback, players like the above would've had Brailey for breakfast in the middle

Yeah. That’s what I was getting at.

I’m not sold on the need for a 14 because a lineup with McInnes, Graham, Talakai and Hynes gives you plenty of cover already - but if Fitz thinks a 14 is necessary Berrell is in the mix because he is a better 9 than Tracey and at least as good a 6.

To have a 9 “at least as good as” Connor as a half is concerning given that Tracey is MEANT to be a half.

Nothing that hasn’t already been mentioned but thought I’d drop it in anyway.

The Mole: Cronulla Sharks sign Petero Civoniceva Medal winner Jayden Berrell

A 26-year-old carpenter from Brisbane has been handed a chance of a lifetime with a fulltime contract at the Cronulla Sharks in 2022.

Hooker Jayden Berrell looked to have missed the boat when it came to a career in the NRL after battling away in the Queensland Cup in recent seasons.

But the crafty hooker won the Petero Civoniceva Medal for best player in the Intrust Super Cup competition this year - and that suddenly opened doors.

"Cronulla showed some interest and Jayden jumped at it," Berrell's manager, former dual international Mat Rogers, told Wide World of Sports.

"He was just so determined to make it. He would go to the gym at the crack of dawn, then go to work, then drive from the Gold Coast to Brisbane to train with his team, Wynnum Manly.

"And he juggled all that with a wife and two kids so it's a wonderful story.

"(New Sharks coach) Craig Fitzgibbon has been fantastic to deal with and really took to Jayden.

"The fact that he got a deal at my old club Cronulla makes it all that much sweeter for me."

A former Australian Schoolboy, Berrell is most at home at hooker but can also play lock.

"Going from juggling football in with fulltime work, it is a great opportunity for him and shows what hard work can do," Rogers said.

Not quite the Chris Beatty Stature, but appears to be a bloodnut, none the less. Team needs more Gingers.

Chad leaving has the whips squarely aimed at Brailey but I reckon Hynes is going to take a few lashes while we are at it

Moylan won't be fit enough for long enough to shoulder the week to week festivities of disgust

If there isn't a player to blame why even follow a Rugby League team and post on the internet lol

I reckon Hynes will be a fan favourite. He plays his heart out as well as being insanely skilled.

I hope so. It's not hard to look good in a team scoring 40 points every week though.

I'm very interested to see how he goes.

Lazy prick hasn't even shown up for training yet. Not putting in. Needs to have a good hard look at himself. Not sure what Fitz is smoking.
