Is 2011 the year of the forward pass?

It seems every season there is some new refereing controversy, crack down ect around rule interpretations or the like.

Incorrect rulings on forward passings have really got me this year and seem to stand out above other of the other many rubbish calls or flavours of the month. I think this is an area of the game they should be getting correct more consistantly.

I almost wish they would let the line ball or flat ones go in benefit to the attacking team. It shoud balance out in the course of the game and often it is nit picking and has no effect on things but when it leads to a break that pass often comes under scrutiny and gets called up as forward.

In-fact I don't think the ref gets it wrong that often but it's the touchies who are apparantly "in-line" with the players that make a dodgy call. But game after game obvious forward passes (usually on hit ups) get let go.

Is the "out of the hands" intepretation too subjective and difficult to call on?What would you change in the rules to make it fairer and better for the game. Or is it simply that officials havn't made that appoitment at OPSM?

I'm not just bitter about the Manly game, it's in alot of games this year Sharks and non Sharks alike.

Someone mentioned that Union is more leniant... not suggesting we replicate them.

I think there has to be a way for a computer to rule on this, like computers rule on things in tennis and cricket.

A computer should be able to check the velocity of the ball leading up to it being passed, and check if the directional velocity has increased after leaving the hands or not.

As for rules in general, I think there are times when players break rules and breaking the rule actually gives them an advantage, and there's times when it doesn't give them an advantage. For example a forward pass doesn't always give a team an advantage, sometimes it's a disadvantage because the receiver may have more trouble catching the 'dodgy' pass. But other times it going forward can directly be beneficial, to get around a defender or whatever.

This should be taken into account when making line ball decisions.

It's probably not possible, but it'd be nice if it was taken into account for knock-ons as well. Often times they go back.

Its very simple r9ule flat passes forward cut it out all together then it wont be a problem.

I asked some CH9 techs this when I was doing my Cisco Certs years ago they said it could be done but the main problems is the cameras are so variable and its also varies how they are set up and where so to get the angle and calculations right every time it would be a bit iffy and probably be wrong the variables also change on the focus as well, these guys really new their snizzle and they had thought about it a good deal as well.

Remember what Chris Anderson did to our team with his flat pass theory? That was horrible huh? The idea of the flat pass is half of the problem I reckon. The onus should be on the ball carrier to propel the ball backwards. If players started getting penalised again for forward passes I reckon there'd be way less forward passes and less marginally forward passes as well. I admit though, that this gives the ref and touch judges more of a chance to change the course of the game with dodgy decisions ... hmm

forward passes don't worry me very much. If they are blatantly forward then call them but if they are flat-maybe a little bit forward then let the game flow.

I can live with it. I sure as **** would rather get dudded on a couple forward pass calls throughout the year than have some sort of system where its referred to a computer to decide.

Not everything is meant to be 100% spot on in sport. It would be boring as **** if it were.

The ruling of forward passes has been really irritating this season. Its amazing what the reffs see as forward , yet they cant see what else is happening on the field.

Another concerning issue too , is the reffs failure to register that a team is offside. Time after time , the playing of the ball is altered by opposition players being offside , I mean really, it ruins a game.

High tackles have been really bad this season too , every time I re-watch a game , I note the hig tackles around the neck.
From our game against the raiders , Gallen was caught in a high tackle where he was choked around the throat , in the Sunday Telegraph , the main picture with him in it clearly highlights this.

I think the touchies see a way to get involved in the game and think "oh boy" I can call this one! What a job - running up and down a sideline occasionally raising a flag. They get compensated well though!

Yea I think we can live with the odd wrong ruling but we want consistancy. Not one ref letting them go and another at a different game calling them all up and then changing his goggles half way through the game as well.

brett suttor and jason robinson are the worst refs by far, and the forward passes have been terrible this year
