with all this recent talk about slater recently and at the end of last year with lockler about these players being considered immortals, i have not heard anyone suggest that gallen should be considered for this honour. but i can not think of anyone that would deserve this honour more. want do you guys think?

Actually it has been mentioned recently.

Meanwhile, though Gallen has earned his fair share of raps, he won't get one better than this: Queensland coach Mal Meninga reckons the Cronulla captain is an Immortal in waiting.''Darren, Cameron Smith and Paul Gallen are on their way up to that status,'' Meninga told The Sun-Herald. ''That's how highly people in rugby league rate Paul Gallen. There is always going to be comment about this stuff, people will make those decisions. I think he deserves it. What he's done in the game, particularly recently, is incredible.
''And then there's his loyalty. You don't get much loyalty now in the game these days …he'll go down as one of our greatest players as well.''

Bob Fulton wouldn't even select him for state of origin a few years back. Shows how much that guy knows.

I personally find it very disrespectful to talk about a player being an immortal while they're still playing.

You should wait for retirement and then at least another 5 years for the hype to go away. So you can look back and judge with a clear head.

Joey Johns should be up for selection around about now for example. I'm not saying he deserves it, but the talks should be about him now and not Lockyer and certainly not Slater or Gallen.

Lockyer for sure. He holds the record for most comp games, SOO & Tests, has won a heap of premierships and was pretty much a top 2 player for the last 10 years.
Slater - maybe
Gallen - probably not, but if he leads the Sharks to their maiden premiership AND a NSW to a SOO win AND wins some individual hardware (Dally M) it would help his cause

Tend to agree however Slater has not been a top 2 player for 10 years, that's ridiculous.

I think Mengina has to be up there as a contender for future immortal as well as Lockyer and A.Johns before Slater even gets a mention

I'd put Johns and/or Locky down for the last 10 or so years. They are really a different level to the rest.

Slater, Thruston, Cameron Smith maybe when they come to the end of their careers. Its a bit hard to say at the moment. I really hope they keep the numbers extremely limited though. In my opinion there should really only be one player added every decade, at most. It needs to be the elite of the elite, of the elite.

Agree slide. I think Joey was a better player however Lockyer is a way better total package and deserves it more. Joey's off field nonsense should preclude him from being an immortal.

I love Gallen but there are quite a few players ahead of him when it comes to being named an immortal. Can't see it happening. As others have mentioned, from recent memory Lockyer, mal and A. Johns are all way ahead.

I think they need to lay off the term Immortal & stop handing them out so damn quick. Every 10 years they should announce 1 or 2 more Immortals into the elite list of them. To me, it's the highest form of reward as a footy player & shouldn't be something to just throw at anyone.

On a side note, NRL doesn't have a Hall of Fame? Maybe throw all the great players from the past into that & leave the Immortals to those that truely deserve it.

Didn't the "immortals" start from one of those rugby league magazine that they started to tell some extra issues???

IMO Meninga is just starting to prepare for Origin, same thing happens every year. They come up with random bull to pump up NSW and make us look like we are specials and QLD have nothing... Wait for the news article saying that NSW have a far better side and SHOULD be favourites.. According to Mal that is.

Gallen is in the top 5 for best players currently playing the game but he still has a few years left of playing before retirement. You cant say he is an imortal till he finished his career with a premiership, captain NSW to a SOO victory and captain AUS to a few victories.

How about the Sharks win a comp before worrying about having an Immortal.
