WEATHER COULD BE DERBY KEY
27 October 2010:

There was little change to the market for the Victoria Derby after the barrier draw but with the prospect of rain on Friday and race day there could be a dramatic shift.

Trainer Guy Walter is one keeping a close eye on the forecast with third favourite Digital Fortress a proven wet tracker, something he hopes will give him an advantage.

"He's shown he can handle the wet in Sydney and he went well in it last time at Caulfield," Walter said.

"He has come through this preparation very well but like all the others he is unknown at the distance (2500m) but he gives the impression he will run it.

"There is a little doubt about class but he is a worthy candidate and I'm sure he has the stamina which may be what he needs if it's wet on Saturday."

Digital Fortress won over 1600 metres on a heavy Warwick Farm track on October 4 before running a close third to Retrieve and another Derby aspirant Almindoro in the Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) last Saturday week, also on heavy going.

Blake Shinn will ride Digital Fortress who will jump from gate 12 if the emergencies drawn inside him don't get a run.

Punters have opted for the AAMI Vase form with winner Rekindled Interest shading Retrieve for favouritism with TAB Sportsbet.

But Retrieve may have a little luck on his side.

Members of the Kangaroos rugby league team held caps with numbers underneath and connections of the Derby horses were asked to choose a player.

Darley racing manager Trevor Lobb was under instruction from trainer Peter Snowden, a Dragons tragic, to try to pick one of the St George Illawarra players.

When Retrieve's number came out, Dean Young was still available and more importantly, was holding barrier two.

Stablemate Yulalona received gate 17 from Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen which Lobb said was no problem.

"Yulalona is a horse who goes forward and that's what he has to do from out there," Lobb said.

"The draw for Retrieve is ideal and he will handle any rain."

Rekindled Interest (barrier eight) has been unplaced in two attempts on wet ground while Retrieve has two wins on heavy and two placings on slow.

The Bart Cummings pair of Kudakulari and Cosmonaut drew 10 and 20 respectively while AAMI Vase runner-up Lion Tamer came up with gate 18.

Rekindled Interest maintained his place at the top of betting on Wednesday at $3.50 with Retrieve at $3.70.

Digital Fortress was at $8.50 ahead of Almindoro ($10), Smokin' Joey ($12) and Lion Tamer ($14).

Tom Waterhouse dares punters to bet big on So You Think
James Hooper
From: The Daily Telegraph
November 01, 2010 12:43PM

TOM Waterhouse has shelled out well over $1 million this carnival paying punters who've backed the Bart Cummings superhorse So You Think.

But at today's Call of the Card in Melbourne, Waterhouse is daring punters to have as much money as the like on the Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes winner in tomorrow's Melbourne Cup.

The query on So You Think is whether it will be able to run two miles at Flemington, the hardest staying test for horses world-wide.

"I've lost an absolute squillion on So You Think, it's just been unlimited. But I think there's plenty of reasons to take it on in the Cup," Waterhouse said.

"On all the other occasions it deserved to be the short price it was but now there's such a following of it I think it's decent enough odds that I'm going to put my shoulders back and really lay it.

"I'm going to bet top odds about it and I reckon there's going to be an avalanche of money."

Waterhouse's mum Gai has two horses running in the Cup, Caulfield Cup-winner Descarado and Sydney stayer Once Were Wild.

With strong form lines leading into tomorrow, he rates both horses as honest chances of delivering his mum her first Melbourne Cup.

"They're both good chances at long odds. They probably won't be suited by the pace in the race but they've got great chances.

"But for me Maluckyday is a real smokey at odds," Waterhouse said.

"Maluckyday is lightly-raced and it was a slashing run last Saturday. It's still got a lot to learn but if there's a fast pace on in the race I reckon it's going to get a great run from barrier six," Waterhouse said.

"It's an improving horse with great times and at 10/1 or a bit over that it's a real chance for the punters and the bookies."

Waterhouse is expected to bet $3.40 about So You Think.

I really can't get interested in horse racing. It's sooooooooo boring. Do you reckon anyone would give two hoot's about it if they made it illegal to bet on it? I don't reckon it would last 6 months!

Imagine what they could do with all that prime real estate that is wasted on horse racing tracks!:good:

Good Luck In The Cup

I'm one of those once a year punters (maybe a couple of times), I'll pick a number for the horse of my choice and a few mystery trifecta's. I'll be off to the TAB first thing to beat the rush.

With the way the weather is down there it should be interesting. Is it still a dead track ?.

Good luck to all those punters out their and hopefully we'll hear some good stories.

That picture is awesome. I only ever bet on Melbourne Cup day or if I'm going to the local races. I am still considering my bet for this year.

Go the place.

You'll get far superior odds and chance compared to what they dish up for winners on a Saturday.

I better win some serious dosh on a trifecta this year.

Every year I place a bet with minimal hopes, slowly work my way up to unwarranted high hopes, I dream a little, the race starts, my horse doesn't threaten, runs 17th and I go back to work. :violin

Descarado and Harris Tweed are my two big ticket babies. Descarado is my sentimental pick (#1 and from NZ) and Harris Tweed was my sweeps pull.
