Greg Pierce missed the grand final in 1978 after being sent off by former Shark, Jack Danzey, for wrestling with Wests prop Dallas Donnelly. He was suspended for four weeks, in a decision which Pierce called "a joke" and "amateurish."
He joined Dane Sorensen on the sidelines for the grand final. Sorensen was sent off in the final match of the regular season, also against Wests, after taking the fall for Steve Kneen, who broke Geoff Foster's jaw in a savage match.
