It's not the challenge; he's capable. It's the style of play I was referring to. They don't show much concern for defence

So are you saying let him have it easy in Flegg or saying carry him in first grade?

what are you on about? flegg has no regard for defence, the jets were one of the best defensive teams in the comp the year we won it despite finishing 8th on the ladder

Whoah... seems I've triggered the forum :D

Where I was coming from was around the quality of defenders we've had come into first grade from the Jets. Their leading defence didn't exactly translate to first grade for the most part. Hence my saying he wouldn't learn defence there. A bit flippant, but pretty accurate imho.

He's about half way between Jets and Sharks, which makes him a Jet this year. And maybe our first team's 'training the defensive house down' will rub off on him in the meantime. He looks like he has a bit of work to do to get a run this year.

Are we talking about Flegg or NSW Cup here?

For Flegg... let's not mistake it for the old NYC. The scores aren't as ridiculous as the NYC used to be. Obviously there are plenty of suspect defenders at that level, but in general the best players tend to go up so everyone is playing against people of a similar development level (the NSW teams at least).

For NSW Cup, you can't take any season stats in to consideration for the year they won (or for most NSW Cup seasons). They basically were a third grade team for parts of the first 8-10 rounds, got some troops back to claw their way back with a very good NSW Cup line up mid-season, and then stacked their team for the finals ( with Soro, Brailey and Bukuya). This happens most years with NSW Cup.

Rather than getting him jogging or on a bike during extra gym sessions they should get him a decent boxing coach.
He moves well enough when he is moving it's flat footed he seems to get destroyed, some extra teaching to stay light on his feet could be a big difference and if he is doing it moving around punching too will be good cardio also.
Can build in some reflex/reaction work too.
Twice in trials he was caught one out at marker and the hooker was long gone before he got moving to react.

Also as I have mentioned before our A defenders (NRL, Jets, Flegg or whatever) need to be awake to tighten up if any prop gets caught alone at marker, but especially someone like Pele.

Plodding along the rode on his feet or a bike won't help fix the fact that his biggest issue seems to be reacting when flat footed.

Obviously something like that is a bit of an investment in the player so you'd hope to retain him if it paid off.
Sometimes you've gotta spend money to make money, if I recall correctly part of how we got Jack Bird was promise to cover his arthritis medication as a club medical expense and that worked out well for us.

Some of the above we went through last season with Hunt
