Sharks book a Grand Final appearance

Sunday 29 September 2013 7:33 PM

Another impressive display of attacking football has seen the NSW Cup Sharks score a convincing 38-6 victory over the North Sydney Bears to book a place in the Grand Final next Sunday.

The Sharks jumped to an early advantage, defended stoutly for the next period of the game before three more first half tries saw them take a 20-0 lead to the break.

There was no complacency in the second period as the Sharks went on with the job to set up a Grand Final match up with the Windsor Wolves.

Centre Stewart Mills got the ball rolling for the Sharks with the first of three tries he would score on the day in finishing off a smart movement in the sixth minute of the match to open his teams' account.

Townsend uncharacteristically missed the relatively simple conversion but the Sharks had a 4-0 lead early in the contest.

On the back of a couple of penalties and some Sharks errors the Bears controlled the next 15 minutes or so of the match but the Cronulla defense was unbreakable, with Mills, Tupou Sopoaga and Nathan Gardner coming up with last ditch tackles to save four pointers and keep their team in front.

Buoyed by their defensive effort the Sharks grew in confidence, with hooker Pat Politoni scoring after a Junor Moors line break, Townsend touching down in backing up a strong run from Kirisome Auva’a, before Mills crossed for his second when re-gathering his own grubber kick.

The Sharks onslaught sent them to the break 20-0 ahead while leaving their opponents shell-shocked and searching for answers.

Gardner would go over in the early moments of the second half to drive the nail in a little further, with Mills scoring his third, before an individual effort from Penani Manumalealii would round out the Sharks scoring.

The Bears would score a consolation try in the dying moments but it was too little too late with the Sharks far too good on the day.

The only negative for the Sharks was a possibly serious hamstring injury suffered by Nathan Stapleton who limped from the field late in the second half.

Politoni was another casualty, injuring a shoulder when scoring his first half try, however Sharks medical staff were optimistic about his chances of being fit for the Grand Final next weekend.

The Sharks had a number of outstanding performers on the day, with Moors strong on the left edge, all four front rowers Siosia Vave, Mark Taufua, Tim Robinson and David Fifita did their job and dominated in the middle, while Mills in addition to finding the line three times was physical in defense.

Following on from putting 50-plus points on the Newtown Jets last week it was another strong performance from the Sharks who certainly sounded a warning to their Grand Final opponents next week.

The Grand Final against the Wolves is scheduled for a 1.45pm kickoff at ANZ Stadium next Sunday.
