Filiga hoping for new start
Travis Meyn
19th February 2010

His name draws comparisons with that of Parramatta cult hero Fuifui Moimoi.

But you will not see Filinga Filiga terrorising Queensland Cup forward packs.

The quietly spoken Kiwi is hoping to cement a spot in the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles' centres and will get his first chance to impress coach Brandon Costin when the team trials against Easts tomorrow night at Langlands Park.

Filiga played two NRL games for the Bulldogs in 2005 but a plague of injuries, including two knee reconstructions, ruined his chances of a permanent first-grade contract.

Having spent last year with Cronulla's NSW Cup team, he finds himself at Stockland Park hoping to resurrect his career.

“It's going pretty good. Training's a bit different from down in Sydney but the boys and coach have been good,” Filiga, 25, said yesterday at Maroochydore's Fit College, where he is completing a personal training course.

“With all the opportunities I've got up here with the Manly club as well there's more options for me, seeing as I'm getting older, to crack the first grade.

“I'm using this season to get back into it. Last season wasn't a good one for me. I had heaps of injuries.

“I just want to play good football here and something might come up overseas or with another team.”

With Manly providing up to eight players each week for Sunshine Coast, Filiga admits it will be tough to cement a permanent spot in the defending premiers' squad.

“There's some pressure there but working with Costo, he seems to think I've got some talent,” he said.

“If I work with him and the team, I reckon I'll cement a spot there.

“I can float around but centre's the main spot I want to stay in.”

His first opportunity to show Costin what he's got will be tomorrow night, with Manly not providing any of its contracted players for the match.

Recruits Zane McCarthy, Kyle Lodge, Martin Cordwell, John Platt and Wiremu Ratana will also have their first run in Sea Eagles colours.

Filiga said he was hoping for a good performance before the Manly-contracted players returned to the selection mix.

“It's going to be a tough one because all the boys are talking about it,” he said.

“It's about time we play some footy instead of just training and training.

“Costo just wants you to turn up and train hard for the team.

“It's not about the individual, it's about the team.”

The Sea Eagles FOGS Cup and Colts teams will also play Easts tomorrow.

Sunshine Coast will have its first home game tomorrow week against Ipswich at Stockland Park.

Is the the guy dubbed the next SBW?

If thats the case then you can blame our recruitment, we would have picked him up at the age of 22?

<EDITED>

Another player with NRL experience, Filinga Filiga, will play his first Queensland Cup match for the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles, at centre, as Kyle Lodge has been ruled out with a hip injury.

Filiga played two NRL matches for the Bulldogs in 2005 and came to the Sea Eagles after a period on Cronulla’s books.
