Eagles flying high

THE big question on everyone's lips at the moment, is, who will stop the Albion Park Eagles from winning back-to-back VB South Coast Group Seven premierships after the Eagles completely and comprehensively defeated Gerringong 66-4 last Saturday to lead the competition at the halfway mark.

Behind the profoundly consistent Eagles on 14 points, lay a group of 'maybe' teams, and amongst this grouping are the second placed Jamberoo Superoos (12) with Milton and Warilla locked together with 11 points and Gerringong (10) slightly holding down fifth spot with Kiama and Berry holding their own on eight points each with respectfully, Bay Basin, Batemans Bay and Shoalhaven Jets now only making up the numbers.

As the second round commences this weekend with 11 games remaining at this juncture, any first grade side losing consecutive games from here on will arguably prove fatal in terms of making a top-five position when the semi-finals arrive in late August.

Berry Magpies continued their rich vein of form by downing the Milton-Ulladulla Bulldogs 38-18 last Saturday at Berry Showground.

The Dogs went to the front early when classy centre Trent Ryan showed dash to outpace his opposite number at the sixth minute before crack Berry second row forward Joel Hewitt went straight through two attempted tackles to lock the scores 6-all after nine minutes of play.

At the 23rd minute, Bulldog rake forward Adam Stone split the defence and punctual to the dot, fullback Peter Howcroft arrived precisely on time to scream over.

With pivot Luke Young making good the extras, the locals led 12-6 and for some reason straight afterwards, their defence overall was in ruins as Berry fullback Sean Deaves went straight into a large gap to score then pivot Geoff Johnson sent second rower Athol Lester rollicking over the line before centre Clinton Braddick crossed to give the Magpies a solid 22-12 lead at halftime.

With Berry scoring tries both sides of the break, the Dogs were in real trouble when winger Falzon dashed across before Bulldog centre John Dale scored a consolation try at 32-18 before Braddick once again sliced through a yarning gap to score his second match try to close the scores at 38-18.
