Sharks Junior Reps Selected for NSWCCC
26/05/2010 11:04:10 AM

Hisense Sharks junior representatives Luke Pickerd and Daniel Moroko have both been selected in the under 18 NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Rugby League side.

The local juniors, from St. Patricks Sutherland and De La Salle Cronulla respectively, were named after a successful trial at St. Mary’s Stadium last week. After 2 days of fantastic schoolboys rugby league and 18 games over the 2 days, it came down to a very anxious wait for both the boys who were elated with their selection.

Pickerd was the SG Ball competition’s leading try scorer this season until an injury in round 8 against the Bulldogs forced him to withdraw from the most successful Sharks SG Ball side ever who finished as Minor Premiers.

Moroko also had an outstanding season for the black, white and blue, contributing well all season with a solid defensive and potent attacking game.

The Sharks would like to congratulate both players for not only their selection in the side, but also the sportsmanship and respect displayed over the trial period.

I'll tell you what, Daniel Moroko the young winger/centre from our SG Ball/U20's team is solid. The dude looks like a chiseled weight lifter at the age of 18. From what I've heard he has a bit of pace too.

I didn't watch the game, but heard from a mate that the kid had a NYC debut to remember. Apparently he nearly scored a try in the final minute to win the game? Anyone have more to say on this?

Moroko nearly scored the game winner from a chip and chase which was knocked dead by the panthers.

Pickerd scored the try that nearly levelled up but Townsend missed the conversion.

On that note, and I dont mean to bag the kid but we need a better kicker for NYC.Townsend only kicks at 66% or something like that. Needs to be better.

I know Murray from the Roosters kicks in the 80s, but from all reports he's a freak with the boot.

Another reason why NYC is an insufficient stepping stone for the NRL.

Does else think that this guy could be a bolter for first grade at some stage next year?

He's obviously mature enough physically to handle it, and given that it appears that both wing positions are open with Cov and Fergo departing, I think Moroko could be a smokey for the NRL side if he starts really well in the NYC. Blokes like Vidot, Croker and Dugan did it for Canberra, and Gards, Stapo and Fergo have done it for us- why not another next year? And surely wing is one of the most likely positions for a young kid to make his own, a la Fergo.

I also think that we're a little short on size out wide- particularly in the back three- and a strong bloke who can start a set well with yards out of our own end could be a tempting prospect for Flano and the staff.

Thoughts?

If your thinking smoky for the wing throw him into the same pool as Mills, Tongia, Gordon, Letuele..

If he is anything like his dad (5 tries for 21 first grade Sharks appearances) I'll be happy.

I went to the same school as him and even though he is really solid for his age he is defs not up to NRL physicality and I think would be well behind the other young centre (forgot his name?)

Agree Josh. I've seen him play a bit over last few years. VG player but think he needs another couple of years for NRL

Other centre = Luke Pickerd??

You must be a Gymea boy then
