Ex-Sharks Boss Irvine May Lead New Bradford Club
January 4, 2017 webmaster Castleford Tigers, Championship, Cronulla Sharks, original content, RLWA
FORMER Cronulla chairman Damian Irvine may yet find himself in charge of a rugby league club in Bradford despite the announcement that the Bulls are to be liquidated.
After being placed in administration for the third time in four years, the Bulls were liquidated on Tuesday following a bid to take over the four-time Super League champions being rejected.

Before the announcement, Rotherham Titans RUFC chief executive Richard Lamb said he would only be interested in taking over if the Bulls were liquidated.
And he told League Express Irvine, Sharks chairman from 2009 to 2013, was his partner in the prospective venture and would definitely be involved if a deal could be struck.
“I’ve told the RFL to let the club go into administration,” Lamb said. “The RFL would then own the franchise and the ground and interested parties who want to own the rugby club could then make a bid to bring it out of liquidation.
“Everyone else just wants Odsal (stadium) but Damian and I just want the rugby club.
“I just want to work with like-minded people, like Damian Irvine.
“If it takes three years to sort out, like the Rangers football club, then sobeit. I have told the RFL that if they mess this up one more time, they will damage rugby league.”

Irvine became head of commercial at Wycombe Wanderers soccer club after leaving the Shire. Aiding the cause of him and Lamb is the fact the Rugby Football League has said any new Bradford club would remain in the Championship but start the season on a 12-competition-point deduction.
“The board recognises the need to balance competition integrity while protecting the reputation of the sport and acknowledges that all other clubs in the league have prepared for the competition in 2017 on the presumption that Bradford would be competing in the Championship,” said RFL chief executive Nigel Wood.
The Rugby Football League statement on the liquidation opened by saying: “While this is terribly disappointing and sad, it is not an entirely surprising development given the scale of debt incurred by the previous management of the club and the debilitating level of financial commitment already entered into for 2017.”
One of the rejected bids for the club came from former New Zealand Rugby League chairman Andrew Chalmers.
Castleford chief executive Steve Gill said the club had been offered several Bulls players but would not be signing any, in the interests of the game.
