Cronulla stars off to Egypt

THE champion Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club is sending a strong team of nine competitors to the "Rescue 2010" World lifesaving Championships in Egypt, starting early next month.

Cronulla's 2010 team is captained by Australian team member Chris Allum, and coached by long-time mentor Kevin Neilson (water) and Col Elliott (beach) with managers Sandra Neilson and Fern Elliott.

Cook MP Scott Morrison presented the team with an Australian flag at a rousing farewell at the club.

"We are again hoping for some excellent performances," said Allum, who pointed to the strong women's beach section and the men's taplin relay team.

The championships have been held every two years since 1988 and Cronulla is one of the few clubs in the world which have sent a team to every event.

Manager Sandra Neilson said the young Cronulla team had worked well to prepare themselves for the trip which she hoped would prove to be "a cultural and educational experience".

"We are confident the team will be excellent ambassadors and that pleasing results will be obtained, overall," Neilson said.

The team will be accompanied by international official Neil Swane and masters competitors, captained by Paul Larssen and Ann Holland, wife of Cronulla SLSC president Greg Holland.
