Heard the Development partner that was financing the Retail section pulled out - hence the no start on that side yet, though anchor tenants are all in place. That is probably what Fitz is referring too. Upgrading the stadium was always a separate issue to the retail side of construction though upgrades should have occurred in part with any build along that sideline. This affects the leagues club rebuild and future club profits etc. The Unit side though is humming along nicely with only few units left to sell in the last stage.

Remember the Gov is giving us nearly 10 million for the stadium and its integrated COE as long as we also raise the matching money - which is turn comes from the new leagues club.

... and that's the sticking point because there's no money to do that and no-one around to fund the commercial / retail side.

Would be very nice indeed. Just wondering though, with 4 NSW teams already in a 10 team National Comp, if the A League might look elsewhere first, even though Sydney could very easily support another team.

100% disagree. A large chunk of Sydney Fc’s membership comes from the shire and surrounding areas. A Wollongong team? Yes please, but keep it out of Sydney. Two teams is perfect for Sydney:

As I said, it depends where the A League wants to look. Regional teams in Qld in a national comp have been a failure. The Brisbane Roar can’t muster a 10000 membership and generally have poor attendances as do Adelaide, Perth and Wellington. I think they will look at a third Victorian side as 1 of the 2 teams. It just depends on whether they are going to gamble on another Regional team. As far as Wooloongong goes, it’s only an hour down the M1 for the Shire anyway, so It would surprise me if there was no support around the Gong for Sydney FC.

Former Australian international and Sharks legend Mark McGaw wants clarity on Cronulla's multi-million dollar development adjacent to their home ground after confirming he will seek election to the club's board next month.

McGaw's 11th hour nomination to run for one of five vacant positions on the Sharks' board ensured members would hit the ballot box for week-long voting next month.

McGaw, who won three caps for Australia and was a 13-time State of Origin representative, will join Darren McConnell, Craig Airey, Paul O'Neile, Gregg Taylor and Paul McCarthy seeking a variety of terms ranging from three years through to one.

And he's campaigning on the promise of finding out if the Sharks' much publicised Woolooware Bay precinct will be enough to financially prop up the club well into the future.

"Where is the construction of the club and the retail part of it at? Once the money is spent from the investment with no money and no land then how will the club survive? I want to see how the investment will be forthcoming in the future to sustain the club over the next 100 years," McGaw said.

Still being assessed: Artist's impression of amended plans for stage four of Woolooware Bay Town Centre - a new retail centre, hotel / serviced apartments, an upgraded leagues club with a large, north-facing terrace and three apartment blocks from 11 to 16 storeys.

The Sharks and their development partner retracted a statement they had received “in principle support” from state government planning officials for the proposed addition of 222 apartments to previously approved plans for a new shopping centre.

A “clarification” was issued saying, “We are yet to receive a formal response from the Department of Planning”.

The misleading statement was given to the Leader in response to rumours there has been difficulty obtaining finance for the retail centre to be built on the eastern side of the football stadium.

In August last year, the managing director of Capital Bluestone, Ben Fairfax, said work was expected to start after the football season ended on the project.

The project will include an upgraded leagues club and, if modifications are approved, 222 apartments on top of the shopping centre, a hotel and Sharks Centre of Excellence.

On Tuesday this week, Mr Fairfax said, “There is no issue regarding funding”.

“The critical thing is that the funding for a straight out retail centre is totally different to that for a mixed use development, which includes residential on top and a hotel,” he said.

“Until we have formal approval, we can’t lock down the funding source, which is the same process we have gone through with other stages.”

Mr Fairfax said processing of the application had taken longer than expected.

Earlier, Mr Fairfax and Sharks chairman Dino Mezzatesta issued a joint statement in response to the rumours.

“Following intensive consultation with the club, community, council and various State Government agencies, the proposed modification to the Concept Masterplan for the next stage of Woolooware Bay Town Centre has received ‘in principle support’ from the Department of Planning and Environment and is currently in the legislative process for a determination by the Planning Assessment Commission,” the statement said.

“Both the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club and Capital Bluestone are fully focussed on ensuring construction on the retail centre and club can commence as soon as possible.

“Discussions are subject to commercial in confidence so no further comment is possible at this time.”

After the Leader asked for comment from the Department of Planning and Environment, the statement was retracted and replaced.

The new statement said, “We are yet to receive a formal response from the Department of Planning regarding a proposed modification to the Concept Masterplan for the next stage of Woolooware Bay Town Centre.

“We have been consulting intensively with all key stakeholders around the proposal, which is currently in the legislative process for a determination by the Planning Assessment Commission.”

The Leader’s print edition, reporting the “in principle support”, went to press before the retraction occurred.
A spokesman for the Department of Planning and Environment said the proposed modifications were still being assessed.

Sutherland Shire Council recommended the application for 222 apartments be refused, but supported construction of a hotel.
