CHAIRMAN ENSURED SURVIVAL

THE Cronulla Sharks would not be in Sunday’s grand final if it wasn’t for the generosity of their chairman Damian Keogh. The three-time Olympic basketballer has thrown in more than $1.5 million of his own money to keep the club afloat in recent years. Another board member Craig Airey has put in the same amount.

The board made the decision not to go to the NRL for financial assistance like St George-Illawarra and the Wests Tigers because they wanted to remain independent. Keogh and Airey will eventually get their cash back when money starts coming in from sales at the residential complex next to Shark Park and the new shopping centre.

I dont understand the hype around Irvine, he served the club, contributed to the development go ahead but I have never been a fan and Ive made that clear. I dont think we would ever had gotten to a grand final with Irvine at the helm. Simply because he is connected to members here and a fan does not make for any reason he gets us to a grand final. The fact that people are blowing smoke up his arse for helping us get to the grand final is a joke. We never ever looked like getting to the grand final under his watch. Gorman, Keogh and Flanno are the reasons we are at the Grand Final, not ****ing Irvine.

I dont want to go down this path of gf day but Im finding it ridiculous that people are stating he is the reason we are here today.

Like I said - we re here because of Gorman, Keogh and FLanno.

Without Irvine we may not have got to the position of being able to bring in a new board and the success that followed

The bloke worked a 6 figure job for nothing, will never forget the stories of him sitting in the stands with the fans asking how they are doing. This back in the cold dark nights in rain and watching our team lose another game at home.
You cannot underestimate his contribution to where we are today. It saddens me that he doesn't feel he can attend today's game, he deserves this as much as any

Whether we'd be here without Irvine is one of those questions that'll always start an argument. No doubt Irvine and the rest of the board played a MASSIVE role in keeping the Sharks alive and that shouldn't be forgotten, but who's to say another board wouldn't have done the same thing.

All I can say is that both Irvine and Keogh have done an amazing job at the helm of this club and I hope both can settle their differences and they can both be involved in the clubs future.

Hey Ben

Let me start by saying "each to their own", meaning that everyone has a right to their own opinion and whilst I don't necessarily agree with yours in this instance, you are entitled to have one (as we all are).

My opinion is that it takes many people over many years to help establish and grow a club through both good and bad times.

I agree that Irvine has made plenty of mistakes, but to give him zero credit is not fair, IMHO.
Gorman and Keogh have also put a lot into this club financial and or through business guidance, knowledge and experience, so in my eyes, all of these gents (together with their respective board members) have contributed in helping us get to where we are today.

Irvine helped keep the club afloat in some pretty bad times. He contributed financially by NOT taking a salary when at the helm. He may have also contributed to our bad times by refusing to employ a CEO, but none the less, he did get us through some difficult times and without his input and dedication, there may not have been a club anymore for Keogh and Gorman to push even further forward.

Keogh (and his board) got the final stages of the development across the line (maybe "Johnny come lately" but got us there none the less), contributed personal funds, reinstated Flanno and extended his contract (which I admit to being against at the time but they could see through all the emotion of the time and made a relatively unpopular decision with the NRL, media and general public). He also employed a smart operator in Gorman, found sponsors when we were not all that attractive and help turn our operational systems around.

So, both men and both sets of boards got us to where we are today. So IMHO, I do give Irvine some credit and thank him for this service to our club.

You have the right to disagree with me. That's your prerogative, but I hope you can find some good in what Irvine did do and give him some credit.

Have a great day and hopefully we can all enjoy the game tonight and celebrate a great premiership!

Up, up....

Without Irvine we would be no longer a Registered NRL CLUB
