That's a good number

Could you also count the metres Fifita runs to join a melee? Maybe at 20%, it'd still be a great bump
Haha - Fifita was actually a beast (averaged over 200)- but he only ever played less than 20 minutes so it's a bit misleading. No way he could keep that pace up for 80. That's another reason why I'm doing the adjustments.

Still a work in progress, but here is a sneak peak at a couple of players.

Note again here that this is only gauging metres. It doesn't currently incorporate the player's defensive workload or any mistakes etc. For example, in one of Rudolf's "worst" games vs the Knights, he made 59 tackles in 52 minutes - so in context I think he can be forgiven for a subpar attacking output.

This gives us a very good view of why the coach regularly plays Toby for 55+ minutes, and tries to keep Jack's minutes under 45.

Need to patent a stat that accounts for meters and minutes and tackles and errors (and god knows what else)

From a run meters perspective looks like Jacky well and truly has the woodsover Rudy. Best games are much better and floor seems higher also.

I'd have said Jack had a better season than Rudolf even though Rudolf beat him out in our player votes. The fact the previously maligned Jack Williams even came third is pretty big indicator he was doing some stuff right.

Jack probably number 2 most improved behind obviously Will Kennedy.

Yeah I agree. Defensively he was better too - I just haven't figured out a way to represent that yet.

I'm looking in to having defensive workload considered in this number. Not for all games - but in any game with an exceptionally high defensive workload.

"VB Hard Earned Index" is already taken - but since this is the 2021 Sharks maybe the "Passion Pop Fizzer Index" would be appropriate.

Burgess would you mind adding Kafusi to this? Would love to see how he compares to our current stock.

Can you please do

Sorensen brothers
Gavin Miller
David Hatch
Dan Stains
Chris Beattie
Bundy
The Ox
Steve Kneen

No rush, by the end of the day would be good.

Yep. I'll add him to the mix. I'm re-entering the data to get more granularity though - so Woods is a goner.

Some more progress...

Now incorporates "high defensive workload games". It's still a "metres" model (it is not an attack + defence score) but it negates a player's score being negatively impacted for having made a zillion tackles in a game.

2012 or 2013 I believe they started recording metres. Not sure when they started differentiating kick returns. Maybe when STATS took it over.

Tackles probably go way back, but misses/ineffective haven’t been around long.

Deeper dive is making Tolman look pretty bloody good.
The man gets so much hate he doesn't deserve, slower obviously these day's but he does the honest job asked of him every week.

Hannay just used/asked to much of him last year and should be held much more responsible imo.

He's not in my top 17 this year but I hope he gets his 300th game at some point this year because he deserves it.

He's just a bit boring, I certainly don't hate him, I was happy we signed him.

But with Finucane and McInnes he has been pushed out of my 17 also. Probably still expect him to play more than 3 games though

A bit boring - but very effective.

Factoring in metres, defensive involvement, and tackle efficiency the stats say for 2021 that:

1 - Williams belongs in the 17, but the plan for him should be to play 35-45 minutes
2 - Rudolf is a workhorse in defence, even though he misses a handful each game
3 - One of Tolman or Rudolf should be on the field at all times
4 - Woods and Tolman were the most effective players if used for high minutes
5 - Talakai runs hard and hits hard, but can only play low minutes and is a poor defender in terms of both involvement and efficiency
6 - Hamline Uele was a step behind. I personally think he may have been carrying an injury.

I'll add the new recruits to the next version to see if that tells us anything useful for 2022 and beyond - and I'll also break down tackle efficiency by minutes played :)

Some more fancy stats.

Below is the "expected" output for each player. The graph shows what you should expect from the player when he is used in the same way as he was in 2021 (or 2020 in the case of Hunt/McInnes). E.g. Hunt has a higher "average" output than most players, but usually plays around 30 minutes, whereas McInnes has a lower average - but almost always plays 80.

This may end up mapping close to what the NRL says for "average metres per game" but it is a more precise calculation because it considers minutes played rather than just total metres divided by total games.

I've also added Pele's NSW Cup games.
