While he's a Newtown-contracted player, he's one worth watching still. I was impressed with him in the trials, at least in attack.

NSWRL match report says:

Cathane Hill was outstanding in the fullback role, scoring two first-half tries and providing consistent attack out of the back — a timely reminder of his value in that position for the Jets.

Interested on other's thoughts... I haven't watched any full games yet this season.

I've only watched the trials and rounds 2 and 3. Still catching up.

I'm keeping track of him. I track every Sharks/Jets prospect up to the end of their "turning 24" season or sign elsewhere (like Vea'ila). Hill turns 23 this year.

- Rounds 2 and 3 he played right centre
- He didn't play round 4
- Round 5 he started at fullback but moved to left wing
- Round 6 he played fullback

Based on what I've watched so far where he played right centre... handy in good ball attack but really struggles in defence. Might be a different story at wing/fullback.

Gave up about 5 penalties and had a couple or errors across the first two games. Some were ruck infringements so ref judgement calls.

Thanks, yeah there was one game I thought his defence was pretty shoddy, but I couldn't remember it well.

He came through Roosters Jersey Flegg, so must have had some decent wraps on him.

I've caught up on Jets games now @SF.

Hill is a handy fullback. He looks much more comfortable there than wing or centre. He's not much of a threat to pass or ball-play, but if you like your fullback to just hover around the ruck, follow the play, pop up when there is a half break and contribute on yardage he's pretty good. That setup works quite well when Ford is playing 6, because he is so good at being the man out the back of shape and they manage those roles well. When Ford wasn't on it was less effective (note that Ford came off just after half time on the weekend).

Defensively at the back he's solid. No fullback makes every single tackle as the last man back or on his own line, but he saves a lot more than he lets in.

Safe under the high ball too - though he hasn't really had to be in too many contests.

Not sure on pronunciation.

I watched some old footage. Teammates call him CJ. Some commentators says "Kath-ane" and others say "Cath-arn-a". Could also be "Kat-arn-e" or "Kath-arn-e"... or something with a soft C.

I think I'll stick with CJ to be safe :)

Standing by for soft C jokes.
