At the risk of opening a can of worms .
If a Caucasian calls a person of native heritage a monkey , I can totally understand the outrage , negativity and racial undertones .
BUT , if a person of coloured skin says the same to another should it be labelled racist ?
I have indigenous mates that call each other Black B'stards which is excepted and even laughed at between them as a term of endearment .
Why I ask is that , I read in Leniu's Samoan culture Monkey is an insult made regarding someone's intellect and not to say you are a Neanderthal .

Is Mam and the bandwagon getting too precious about this ?

I really DON'T know the answer to this situation and personally it is NOT something I would say.

Samoan

Translation of "monkey" into Samoan

manuki is the translation of "monkey" into Samoan. Sample translated sentence: But we don’t need to be foolish like a monkey. ↔ Ae e le tatau ona tatou valea e pei o se manuki.

or

My dear young friends, be smarter than a monkey!
Au uo talavou pele e, ia outou atamamai atu nai lo o se manuki!

Probably not worthy of its own thread... but I would say the answer to your question is that for the most part in Australian media/culture the definition of racism has changed from being measured by the action/intention to being measured by the level of offence taken.

In 2003 I could have called you lots of names egg*, but unless my intent was for it to be a racial thing, it wasn't seen that way necessarily. These days, it is different.

I won't offer an opinion as to whether this is an improvement or a deterioration. That would definitely open a can of worms.

*I would never call you names egg.

No worries mate.

Don't think we need this to be a long-winded discussion. I'll set this thread to archive in a day or two.
