Was thinking about this guy and how he would go returning to the game after a year out.
Has 2021 game pace stepped up a notch, coupled with returning from an injury, would it be a concern for Cam.

Or will it be all sweet and he will settle straight back into the game no problems.

Thoughts?

He’ll be fine. The game is not faster. Commentators just say it is and fans believe it.

I suppose there are 10 or 15 minute periods where you might be constantly defending (with six agains etc). I think that is more fitness then speed.

I would think Cam would be fine in the above scenario. It's our middle forwards and No.9 which can struggle at times which Cam would actually help stiffen up.

Still a million stoppages every game.
One for the bash brothers, Burgess and Bort…

Compare a game from this year and then one from a few years back.

I’m not lead to believe the game is faster, or I’m not convinced the ball is in play for as long, put it that way. The bunker having a say on anything is stupid. The players stand around with their hands on their dick for minutes at a time. They call plays back phases after and pull teams back after try’s have been awarded.

It’s already been done exhaustively for the entire league (not by me).

The data shows…

- Ptb’s are not any faster/different than the last 5-10 years
- teams are passing the ball less in 2020-2021 than before Covid (more dummy half runs and one out runs)
- there was a bit of extra ball in play time for much of 2020, and the first half of 2021
- we are back close to 2019 ball in play time now because the higher scoring games result in more conversions, and the crusher/high-shot crackdown has brought the penalty counts back up
- compared to 2019, any extra ball in play for 2020 and the start of 2021 was mostly a result of less penalties and therefore less kicks to touch and kicks at goal
- the second biggest factor in increasing ball in play has been teams bombing to corners more often rather than kicking out or in-goal l, which is a result of the 7 tackle set rule rather than the rules changes made in the last two seasons
- any extra fatigue is a result of the teams getting massive runs of possession all at once, rather than a team having to do any more work over the full 80 minutes

What they haven’t done is analysed the “run time” of a game from first whistle to last whistle compared to 5 years ago, 10 years ago etc. I’d like to see that done. I think that would give you a good indication of how much “stoppage time” is being lost each game. Half time is longer too.

One thing that is ridiculously obvious is how much the NRL refs have put their whistle away leading up to and during the finals. Set restarts have gone from something like 15-18 per game 4-5 weeks ago to 3 or 4 now.

Another really obvious time-waster in the modern game is the scrum: go and watch a game from 15-20 years ago and see how quick they pack, feed and get out of a scrum. None of this standing around watching the shot clock, or packing in and then stopping the clock.

I haven’t seen anything, but I would hypothesise that if someone did look in to a comparison of say, 2005 to 2021, you’d see something like:

* Time from error to ball leaving scrum… up from 40-50 seconds to 80-90 seconds.
* Total duration of game from opening kickoff to final whistle up by 15-20 minutes
* Time lost to video ref: doubled or tripled

Wade has never been a leader. There were no other captaincy options.
Late reply but only just saw your post. From memory, part of the lure during contract discussions in Wade's earlier days at the club was that we saw him as a future captain. Gal kept extending his career and the promise kept getting delayed. He was then made co-captain as both transition and fulfilling the promise. That's the way I read it anyway.
I agree that he doesn't really come across as a great captain onfield but it's hard to know from outside the playing group. Maybe the team loves him as captain.
I have a hunch that it was difficult for him to get his head around being coached by a guy who used to be below him in the pecking order.
Now that JMo's gone and we have a new coach we might see him more engaged.

thanks for the assessment
much appreciated. so the game not faster Cam should be fine then

just as long as Cam is all in tune and good to return to the game, especially after a good solid year out and recovering from what seem to be a serious injury that lead him to be out so long

can't wait to see him in action and helps our defensive gaps

Should worry more about getting his head around the ball runner than having a sad about a 300 game NRL player being the coach just because they played together previously. But apparently be fine with some actual NRL nobody in Flanno being coach.
Never should have been seen as leadership material if some kind of superiority over a former teammate would mean he can’t listen to him as a coach.

That was only my speculation. Probably far from the truth.

Thanks for the summation Burgess, very interesting.

My only question is that some players have retired because they say the game is too fast for them (eg Trent Merrin) and there are plenty of other players that we fans have now said are no longer suited? And I am not talking about ability.

If the game is not faster, why are some players under the microscope for this reason?
