This week: Aaron Woods

Why? The only two players who played eighty in the middle were Woods and Brailey. Of those, the front rower playing 80 in those conditions is the more impressive feat and the far bigger change from his regular minutes.

Woods vs Dragons: 2 stints of 23 minutes, with ~55 minutes rest in between
Woods vs Raiders: 1 stint of 30 minutes and a stint of 15 minutes, with ~45 minutes rest in between
Woods vs Eels: 80 minutes

The stat line according to NRL.com:
- 80 minutes
- 16 runs for 146 metres
- 48 tackles, 2 misses, 2 ineffective tackles
- 3 errors

Also - take nothing away from the other forwards (Rudolf and Hamlin-Uele) who each spent 40 in the middle and 40 playing on the edge. Great effort and work rate by both of those players while out of position!

***

Here's a quick review of Woods' first 20 minutes:

A solid if unspectacular first 20 from Woods in attack. He had a few runs a few lead runs, he popped one really nice offload that lead to a half opportunity and had a good involvement at first receiver for a long shift to the left.

Defensively he was also solid. They didn't send a lot of traffic his way but he is more a a "stay in the channel" middle forward than a guy who follows the ball side to side looking to make a million tackles. He did his job well in that regard. There were probably a couple of misses or ineffective tackles attributed to him, but they were moreso "bounced off Woods as someone else got them" situations. He did get called out of play (offside) by the ref once, but it had no impact on play because the Eels went the opposite direction.

One mistake for Woods in this period. His tackle gets up high on Moses. Not much in the penalty tbh. Moses was trying to duck under him, the tackle had to be made so I'd prefer giving up the penalty to having Moses slip under him and score.

Some decent play the balls from Woods in this period, especially before kicks and shifts. They used him a lot more on late tackles than they normally do.

***

At this point...

- Moses should have been sent to the sin bin in the 5th minute for being offside on the Nikora quick tap (he was back only 5m ffs)
- Sharks have completed on 8 from 8 possessions (stats say 10 from 10 "sets" because they got a tackle 1 set-restart and a tackle 2 penalty)
- The score is 4-all
- Poor numbering up by the left edge on the first try. Uele was close enough that he could have come across to help, but Tracey has his back to the play the ball, doesn't call for help until it is too late, and the Eels get an easy 3 on 2

***

- In the 20th minute, the Sharks come out of trouble, Townsend puts a great clearing kick down over Sivo's head into the corner and the Eels have it on tackle one 10m out from their own line; Nikora is involved in the tackle and is then called off for a HIA

The full breakdown will start at 19:50 when Nikora left the field (i.e. the moment things got a whole lot harder for the Sharks' middles)

19:50. Nikora and Graham are gone.
***

- Parra bring it out from their end
- Woods involved in one tackle this set
- Play 4 on this set the Eels go to the right, and Woods is standing dead still on the other side of the ruck. If Parra go through the middle on that play they rip the Sharks open. He's not alone on this sort of play. On the next tackle Toby does exactly the same thing.
- Eels kick, after a laughable play where Moses dead set uses Gutho as a shield so Brailey can't get him.
- Next set Sharks rip through the Eels down the left. Kennedy goes to the winger instead of Tracey, who is marked by Moses by still may have had the speed/momentum to score. Good play by the whole spine. Woods was involved as a decoy early. Sharks run it on the last and are tackled
- Woods is involved in a few tackles this set, including a good one-on-one effort on Gutherson. Toby has a bad miss on this set. Eels bomb from half way and the Sharks work it out from their own 10m line.
- Tackle 3 Woods runs with Toby in support, but Woods passes behind to Chad. They make good yards on the shift but Katoa goes down injured and drops the ball. First mistake of the game. Hard to be upset with a bloke dropping the ball as he busts his MCL.
- Woods brakes from the scrum and makes a good tackle on Dylan Brown (with others)

***
23 minutes down now. Sharks middles including Woods are still looking strong for the most part.

At this point the Sharks right edge is Townsend-Williams-Wilton-Dugan. Eels recognise this and start sending a fair bit of traffic down this side.

Toby is now playing on the left edge.
**

- Next set Woods is involved in one tackle. Eels drop it on the 4th
- Sharks work it out. Woods doesn't have any touches but has a good lead run for Tolman on the 3rd. Moses bumps his head. Moylan kicks out on the full.
- Eels drop it on the 1st. Townsend shifts to Moylan
- Tackle 2 Woods takes Uele with him, and again goes out the back to Townsend who finds Kennedy. It gets a bit sloppy, but Kennedy dives on the ball to retain possession
- Tackle 4 Townsend comes left. Woods is the inside runner. They fake the shift and find Woods, but the Eels read it and shut it down quickly. The ball pops out and the refs call it a knock on.

**
50/50 call which could have got the Sharks a penalty, but I reckon Woods was trying to milk one and outsmarted himself
**

- Woods gets involved on tackle 2. He's still moving his feet well and coming up with the line. Not looking tired yet
- Eels shift right and then kick back to the goal posts. No-try to Will Smith after Townsend gets back to cover up. Probably should have been a drop out but the Sharks get the 20m tap. Video ref stuffed this one up
- Woods plays first receiver yet again for the shift. Townsend goes left to Moylan, who taps on to Tracey who brings Ronnie under. Sharks are tackled 28m out on the third. More good play from Woods and the halves there.
- Not one to rest on his laurels, Woods runs the same play again shifting the other way. This is the "forward-forward-shift left-shift right for a short kick" set we saw a few times against Canberra. Woods' pass isn't the best though. It puts Townsend under a lot of pressure, and only the winger (Dugan) times his chase well enough to be in the frame. Woods is an OK passer, and he is doing a decent job here, but it is quite noticeable that (like a lot of players at all levels) his passing right to left is way better than left to right. They should probably plan for a bit shorter pass next time unless Magoulias is on

***
There has been a bit of discussion on the forum about Chad and early kicking. I'd like to point out here again that this is clearly a strategy/game-plan thing. The execution failed here because of a poor pass and a rushed kick - but this play happening because Bomber wants it to - not because Townsend has a brain explosion.
***

- Woods is involved no tackle 2 and then gets back in the line but isn't required again. Eels shank a kick in to touch 40m out from the Sharks line
- Next set Woods takes the dummy run on a similar play (but without the kick). Tolman does the passing this time. Townsend kick is charged down and the Eels have it
- Woods gets involved on tackle 2
- On tackle 3 Townsend chases from first marker, Williams at second marker gets caught standing still, and Gutherson splits them. Woods is the A defender on the left but has cheated across a little. This one is mostly on Williams and partially on Townsend but if Woods' first movement is up instead of across he is probably there to help shut it down. Gutho goes through and Kennedy gets a head knock.
- Woods get back in the line in good time. Eels drop it the last
- Sharks work it away. Woods is a lead runner for Tolman on play 2 and then makes good yards and gets a quick ptb on play 3. Sharks kick early. Townsend squeezes it just inside the touchline
- Woods gets involved on tackle 1 in defence. Eels attack the makeshift right edge and Sivo goes through and the Sharks scramble. Woods is making his way back onside as Sivo plays it.

***
On this next handful of plays I think we get some pretty harsh refereeing. All correct by the book I guess, but some unfortunate calls.
***

- Eels play it 12m out from the Sharks line. Woods makes it back late and doesn't contribute in defence, but is onside. Rudolf stops and turns about 4m out so is clearly in front. The refs calls him out, and he backs up a little to avoid a penalty, but Mahoney drops it half a second later. The ref still pings Toby for being in front.
- Next set Woods gets involved on tackle 2 in front of the posts. Eels keep it in the middle on the next play, and then try to hit a crash runner at the posts. Woods is off the line quickly trying to tackle Kaufusi, but Mahoney throws it in to him. Eels scrum feed.

***
I know they rule it that way these days, but this is a dumb rule imo. A bloke clearly making a tackle shouldn't have deemed to have knocked on when the opposition player passes it in to him. Correct ruling, dumb rule.
***

- Eels bring it towards the posts on tackle 2. Woods is involved, slows down the ptb, and is at first marker
- Eels then shift left. Townsend reads that the short man is getting it but it goes out the back. Eels runner is on the inside shoulder of Williams, but makes contact with him and with Townsend, effectively taking both of them out of play. At this point the outside men have followed Townsend in and left Sivo unmarked. Try time Eels.
- While they are preparing to kick off Kennedy leaves the field and Magoulias comes on.

***
Right edge is now Uele-Townsend-Williams-Dugan.
Left edge is Mulitalo-Wilton-Moylan-Rudolf.
Middles are Woods, Tolman and Magoulias.

~3 minutes to play in the first half
***

- Woods gets in on the tackles from the kick off. On the next play the Eels drop it after a good Rudolf tackle.
- On the 3rd tackle they shift right on the back of a good ptb from Billy. Woods is the dummy runner for Tolman. He goes out the back for Townsend but it is another poor left to right pass and Townsend is swamped.

***
They just can't get quality ball now on any right side shift. Normally what they would do to set that play up is have Graham play dummy half and have Brailey play first receiver. Since there is no Graham they can't run that play. They either need Magoulias making that pass or they need to figure something else out. Tolman and Woods aren't slick enough.
***

- A messy play after a Brailey kick leads to a Sharks scrum. Sharks get a few plays in, Townsend kicks for Dugan who looks likely, but he doesn't get the bounce. Half time 10-4 Eels.

“Hard to be upset with a bloke dropping the ball as he busts his MCL.”

I did mine and didnt drop it so clear evidence I’m tougher than an NRL player.

Not even convinced he dropped it. Did bobble it but I thought kept it. So I’ll call it a draw as to who is tougher.
I can’t finish like that though, so he wins sexier pretty easily.

Second half

- Sharks kick off and Woods makse the opening tackle with help from Tolman and Magoulias. It looks on this opening set like Tolman and Rudolf have switched, but by tackle 4 they are back in the same shape with Toby on the left. Moylan is defending in the centres and Wilton is defending 3-in to start, but they also switch - so that was probably just to avoid Moylan defending from the kick off (that is a pretty common thing for coaches to do)
- Woods makes another tackle on the 4th and the Eels kick
- Sharks use backs to ruck it out (remembering that Williams and Wilton are backs at this stage), Brailey kicks on the 4th and finds touch just inside the 20m line
- Magoulias gets penalised for lifting Fergo on the next play. A bit of a soft one, but correct as per the rule book. Don't lift the leg Billy
- Woods gets in on a tackle with Brailey on tackle 2 after the kick to touch and then gets to second marker. The Eels attack edge to edge and get six-more after the ref rules Williams is playing at the ball when he is trying to wrap up Opacic (another interpretation I think is bogus. What is he supposed to do there? Let him get his hands free?). From the tap, Woods gets in on a flop
- Woods is getting off the line well. He isn't being asked to do a lot of work at this stage, but he's where he needs to be.
- Eels grubber to the in goal and get a repeat set. Woods and Tolman make the tackle from the dropout
- Eels again shift to both sides. They are really trying to work over the makeshift edges
- Tackle 4 the Eels go right and Fergo doesn't quite get the ball down. Good tackle by Tracey

***

HB mentioned in another thread that he would be interested in some second half stats, so I'll keep a running tally here of possession stats

So far...

5 1/2 minutes gone. Sharks have had 4 tackles in possession, one of which was a kick return.

Completions are 1/1 - 100%

***

- Sharks bring it out with edge players and backs before a shift to the right on play 3 just inside their own half. This time it is Magoulias making that left to right pass. Much, much better. The pass is out in front of Townsend where it should be. Townsend dummies, makes good metres and gets a good ptb.
- Woods takes a hit up to the posts on play 4. He dummies to Tolman and takes the tackle inside the 40m line. Sharks shift right again. Townsend short to Uele. Last tackle Townsend kicks it straight in to the hands of Mahoney. Good set. Poor finish.
- On the kick Woods is standing 15m behind the play, so by accident is in a good position to cover. He isn't needed though. Chad makes the tackle.
- Eels work through the middle with dummy half runs, plus some offloads and some good short passing. They make great metres and Woods makes a tackle on his own 40m for the 4th. Eels shift right, Wilton falls off a tackle and the runner heads back to the middle. Woods and 2 others hold their line really well and shut it down. Woods gets to first marker on the last and chases hard. This forces Mahoney to go himself from dummy half, but the second marker (Toby) does a great job and the help from outside comes in to shut it down.
- Sharks work it out with backs again. A great run and ptb from Tracey leads to a scoot from Brailey. Williams and Townsend support him, and he puts Williams through. Townsend is covered so Williams kicks. Idea was OK but the execution was pretty ordinary. I think if he had his time again he hold it and gets a quick ptb
- On the next play, the Eels start bringing it out. The middles are still moving up well, and Woods is involved in the tackle with Tolman
- After an offload and a run back to the middle, the Eels shift left two plays in a row. Woods stands still on the first and doesn't move up, and on the second he comes up, stops and doesn't follow the play. The Eels run in to touch so there was no negative impact, but he's starting to cheat occasionally. Good defence by the whole right edge there.
- Sharks start to bring it out with middles and then shift left, then right. Woods is a dummy runner for Moylan on the shift right. Tracey is tackled and Townsend kicks high. Parra are tackled about 15m out. Good set

***

50 minutes down. Sharks have had the ball for 17 tackles in total this half.

Completions are 4/4 (but only if you consider the Williams early kick a completed set) so I'm calling that 3/4.

51st minute...

- Woods is moving up with energy again now. He makes a good tackle on Opacic on play 3
- Eels work it out, kick to Dugan and he is tackled 18m out. 3 good forward runs get them past half way, including Woods on the 3rd. Townsend kicks early, but it's a poor kick which goes straight down Gutho's throat. He makes it back to about 35m out.
- Eels keep attacking the edges. After a half break Woods covers and makes a great legs tackle on Lane to shut it down. Eels bomb and the Sharks get penalty for a mid air tackle. Sharks make good metres on the first (Williams) but Uele drops it next play.
- Eels hit the edges yet again, going through this time but getting pulled down inches out. They they shift left but Paulo loses the ball. Sharks work it out again. Woods isn't involved early but he following closely. On the 4th they shift left with Woods as first receiver again. The pass - this time to his "good" side, again isn't great and Moylan has to go himself and take the tackle. The team is really struggling on these plays. it's a decent end to the set though, as Townsend bombs and they tackle the Eels on their 10m line. Williams is getting through a mountain of work. Chasing kicks, taking hit ups, everything you can ask.
- Woods comes in for a flop on tackle 2. On tackle 3 Magoulias goes the one on one strip and is penalised. Another tough call on this one. A fraction of a second earlier and he's probably good. Can't blame him. Smart play but the timing was not quite right
- Woods and Magoulias make tackle 1 but leave the player on his feet. Again the Eels hit both edges but the Sharks gaffa-taped left and right sides hold strong. They kick to the in goal on the last and get yet-another repeat set
-Another set, and another early shift to attack Wilton. The edge shuts it down and they come back to the middle. Woods and the other Sharks forwards are still doing a great job of coming up as a line, and after a left side shift the Eels drop it in the ptb
- Sharks ruck it out. Once again Woods gets the 4th tackle ruck, and this time he flicks a nice pass out the back to trailing Tracey. He finds Toby for good yards, another offload, and Townsend tries to thread the needle to Dugan. Eels get a hand on it. Sharks scrum feed. Nice play by Woods there to start that movement.
- From the scrum Wilton takes a hit up, and then Rudolf drops it cold on tackle 2.

***

60 minutes down. Sharks have had the ball for 32 tackles this half (and just 15 in the last 10 minutes)

Completions are 3/5 during the period, and now 6/9 for the half. NRL.com stats won't match mine though because they probably count the mid-air tackle penalty as a completed set

Things get really bad from here ...

61st Minute...

- Woods gets involved for another flopping effort on tackle 1. Eels go right once again and beat Toby, but Moylan covers up. On the next tackle they go right before stepping inside, and Woods is there to cover.
- A couple of tackles later the Eels shift left and Opacic looks like scoring in the corner, but a tap on goes forward.
- Sharks ruck it out again. Woods taces a run to the middle on the third with Tolman (as always) in support. Woods gets a nice quick ptb. 2 tackles later Townsend kicks high down to Gutherson and the Eels are tackled. Woods' kick chase is non existent, and he walks down to join the defensive line
- Eels are making a lot of metres working over both back rowers now. The middles are still working hard though, and Woods gets involved on the 4th and then he covers across nicely no the 5th to cover Will Smith. Unfortunately for Woods, Smith's bludger off a kick ricochet's off Moylan and hit him. Accidental offside and yet another Eels scrum feed. The trainer comes on and gives Woods' busted melon a bit of fresh strapping
- Eels work left and then back to the middle, where Woods and the other middles come off the line and defend well. Nathan Brown then runs towards the goal posts and is tackled again by Magoulias and Tolman.

Burgo rant coming up...

***
This penalty really pisses me off!

Have we this penalised it before? Yes.
Did Billy take a risk here? Certainly.
Was Billy square at marker - ****ING OATH.

I slowed this right down and watched it over and over. Magoulias is perfectly square at marker when the ball hits Brown's foot, and doesn't move until after Brown's foot clear's the ball... otherwise known as WHEN THE PLAY THE BALL IS COMPLETED. You could play this video for kids as an example of perfect marker play. To penalise Magoulias there was a horrible, horrible call by the referee. It is also not challengeable.

3 penalties on Magoulias now. If you look at the stat line only you'd say he is "undisciplined". I disagree. The lifting tackle was fair enough (but there was nothing in it), the strip was unlucky, and this one was just bull****.

Back to the Woods now...

***

- Sharks kick off and Woods makes the tackle with the other two middles. Eels ruck it through the middle. Woods looks strong on the early plays but is looking very tired late in the set. Eels are making big metres. They bomb down to Dugan, who takes it a metre out from his line and is pushed in to the in goal
- Eels attack the middle early. Woods and Magoulias make a good tackle on play 2, then Tolman falls off a tackle on play 3 but Billy covers up. Finally, they run a third play through the middle, Tolman falls off again and Woods manages to keep Smith inches out. On the last the Eels kick in goal and get another drop out

***

It has now been 6 minutes since the Sharks last had the ball (other than Dugan catching it and getting belted)

***

- The Eels shift early again, this time going to their left. The Sharks look like they are stripped for numbers, but manage to get across and number up. Dugan makes a good tackle to deny Sivo.
- The Eels come back the middle. The Sharks middles are still moving well off their line. All 3 combine in defence on this play
- Eels shift right, then immediately shift left. Some more fantastic scramble from Williams and Dugan shuts it down. Williams can hold his head high.
- Eels bomb to a corner, get a couple of lucky bounces (because why wouldn't they) and Fergo scores

***

70 minutes down. The Sharks had the ball for one set (five tackles) in the last 10 minutes.

37 tackles total this half

Completions are now 7/10.

If you want to pinpoint where the game was lost, it was during this period. They just had no ball. The combination of bad bounces, bad calls, and patient play by the Eels just wore the Sharks down.

Woodsy is still going OK though. He's not the most energetic player in the world chasing from marker or on clearing kicks, but he's getting through plenty of defence and still moving up with his teammates.

71st Minute ...

- Sharks retrieve the ball from the short kick off, ~9 minutes after their last possession
- Sharks run a good ball set. Woods is an inside runner for Chad on tackle 3 as the shift left. If they shift back to Chad on the next play you can bet a grubber for the outside backs is coming
- and there you go... grubber for Dugan is on, but he doesn't get the bounce and Gutho goes the other way.
- Eels play hot potato against some tired Sharks players. They shift right, then offload to Paulo back through the middle. Woods is in position here, but throws out the spaghetti arms. He gets him eventually, but not well enough or quick enough to stop a good offload. RCG now has the ball 15 out

***

What follows is possibly the worst piece of defence I have ever seen from Chad Townsend. I'm possibly the biggest fan of this player on this forum, but this attempted tackle would have been embarrassing in the local under 11's. Wow - just wow. I don't mean to put this whole try on Chad. There were 5-6 other blokes who missed tackles or made ineffective tackles on the play, including Tolman who should have done a much better job of helping Chad... but in isolation Chad's arm-grab. Just WTF!?!?

***

- Sharks kick off and Woods makes a good tackle with Magoulias. They both back it up with help from Rudolf on the next tackle, and Woods gets involved again on the 3rd. Soon after, the Eels throw a forward pass and the Sharks get the ball again. Sharks scrum feed with 5 to go
- Woods is used as a dummy runner on a left side shift in the ensuing set, and the Sharks actually move the ball really well. They shift back to the middle with players lined right and... Brailey drops it cold. The pass wasn't perfect, but was good enough. He should have taken it.
- Eels work it out. Woods gets involved on tackle 3. This was not a poor set from the Sharks defensively. They were containing the yardage and slowing things down well. It is just a very poor read from a prop who is playing back row (Uele). He runs out of the line with eyes only for the guy out the back, and the Eels go straight through. 28-4.
- In the final 2 minutes the Sharks kick off, and once again the 3 middles are there combining on the opening tackle. Poor Billy Mag cops a shot right in the Goulias.
- On the second tackle Fergo goes straight through Brailey, pass it around a bit, and then grubber to a corner. Tracey brings it off the line
- Woods has a run to the middle on the 4th play. On the 5th Townsend chips, Woods is involved in the tackle, and nobody really seems interested in playing anymore.

***

Final tally

Sharks had the ball for
- 15 tackles in the last 20 minutes
- 47 tackles in the entire second half
- Counting the final set, they completed 2 sets in the last 10 minutes

Their final completion rate was 8/13. Not great percentage wise (~62%) but the number of tackles is possession is a much more telling number. The drops contributed, as did some poor kicks from Chad, but the bad bounces, the penalties, and the quality of the opposition were bigger factors. Parra did a great job of wearing the Sharks down, particularly on the edges.

All in all a fantastic defensive performance from the whole team, the final 8 minutes notwithstanding. They kept turning up, and it took a couple of bad bounces to turn the game Parra's way.

**
As for Woods, it was a fine effort and he played strong to the final whistle. He definitely conserves energy along the way though, probably by design. He doesn't do much kick chase, rarely pressures the kicker, and spends a lot of time between the goal posts. He did cover left quite a few times though to shut down half chances, and it definitely helped at the time.

Of the guys who are out there most of the time he is clearly the best at passing and a good choice on those longer shifts, but if they are going to persist with those shifts I'd rather bring Magoulias on a little earlier than have Woods do it. I didn't keep score, but if they did 10 of those shifts I reckon they only got a clean pass about 4 times, and the only one coming left to right where they got a good pass was the Magoulias one. It's a small part of the game, but a good clean pass in those situations has a big impact on the timing of the guys out wide.

Someone called Woods a "plodder' a little while ago, and while I tend to agree, being a plodder tends to mean a guy you don't notice as much. While Rudolf and Uele are high energy they are also higher-mistake-rate, and neither has a passing game. Woods, particularly in this game, was keeping it simple. While I did point out a few times I though he should have kept his feet moving, it never hurt the team and he was always ready to go on the following play. Maybe it's just an "old bull, young bull" situation. He is always there when he is needed.

Great effort from Woods to play 80. Also great work from both Wilton and Williams in the centres, and from the two guys filling in at back row. Parra didn't send a whole lot of traffic down the middle until late. Their strategy for the middle 50 minutes or so was to try to work over the guys playing back row and to try to catch out one of Williams/Wilton in defence. Great effort from all 5 of those players.

Now we're in lockdown, surely there's time for another edition Burgo? Would be really interesting to see Trindall's game (though I know it doesn't work with the 'B' shtick!)

Ok looks like some want a shorter version. On Talima Tauti perhaps?

Me, i would like one on Our Man Williams given how divided people seems to be on him. To me he aint a first grader std, but maybe on analysis, i'm wrong.

That's why I was thinking Tricky. Even Tracey, as I feel like he did more of the behind the scenes stuff and was more involved than it appeared

Yes , I do love both forms
Perhaps Limericks a tad more

BUT , No doubt Chad with some of his efforts is the Master
Who could forget this pearler from him

There once was a halfback called Chad
Who's decision making was considered quite bad.
Forum Snowman would call it
Some posters ignore it .
But onto North Queensland all glad

Well for a start, me. That’s all your handiwork egg.
Not a bad try though.
